Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

I knew it would be Saitek. They need a a throttle which has 4 axis. Forward/back for main engines, sideways for side thrusters. If it is a re-branded X-52/55 then it would be rather lame.

I do have some skepticism for the project, but IMO Smart isn't worth listening to.

Derek Smart is kind of a crazy asshole, so large amount of salt taken with that.

Having said that, I would have expected the game development to be further than it is given the time/money involved.

I was hoping that it would be logitech that make the HOTAS. Saitek does make some amazing products, but their QA needs step it up on what goes out the door.

Also, Derek Dumbass is no longer a backer. He got his wish. Now someone needs to talk his vaperware off of steam greenlight.

I would start demanding refunds - or at the very least some accountability - if I were you before it's too late. As soon as ships, polygonal and texture/normal mapped ones that aren't even real at that were being sold for hundreds if not thousands of very real dollars, I knew something big was up. Hook, line, and sink 'er.

You do know who Derek Smart is, right? And the whole controversy around him?

so are they accepting refunds? game is progressing way too slow for my taste. rather pay later when the game is actually near completion

I think if you're a somewhat known asshat and try drum up drama in order to get exposure for a piece of crap game on steam you're trying to make then yes, they may issue you a refund and then cancel your account.

It worth a shot if you really want to get your money back. You could also sell your pledge to someone and if it has LTI probably make a few bucks extra back or look at the black market and sell the account as well. It's all a risk just like when you donated money to CIG.

Have you ever seen or played any Derek Smart game? The irony of him passing criticism on anything associated with game development is unparalleled. Apart from the fact that Smart has been trolling the internet since before that expression was ever coined, he is obviously incredibly salty that Cloud Emporium refunded his money and told him to fuck off.

My question is how is he still in the industry? How is he making money? I assume he has a job outside of "game" design. ;)

I also like how he linked to his gaming resume. :p At this point Star Citizen isn't much, but it is likely more enjoyable than anything he put out in the past two decades.

What is the deal with Smart going after Star Citizen? That blog post is a garbled mess with no sense of direction. I took the bait and attempted to read it though. Looks like pure SEO junk more than anything.

This does bring back not so great memories of Strike Commander. Anyone else here had a near top of the line PC at the time when that came out? Still remember the day going to Egghead to buy this game that no PC at the time could run.

Excited to hopefully see SC come out with just some of what's being touted. But I am surprised how many are spending a ton of money on virtual ships for a game that won't be out in the near future..

Also why is he treating the fact that SQ42 is episodic as some kind of news? It has been known to be coming out in chapters for quite some time now. In fact I think the first chapter being free for everyone (non-backers included) and then having to pay for the game to get the rest of the chapters sounds like a bang on way to get more people interested in the game.

No one here cares about Derek Smart.

Hes a self proclaimed internet troll, and is not the kind of person you want in a gaming community.

Giving him his money back was the best move CiG could do in this situation there is no reason to let Derek play the game that he obviously has no real interest in.

GamesCon 2945 (both normal and sub variant, 5,000 uec) and new Koln 2945 poster (1,000 uec) in Voyager Direct store. Caution to subscribers, you get a GamesCon 2945 Subscriber Trophy attributed for free and don't need to buy it...which I did like a moron and not need to contact support or concierge to get fixed.

I got a tour of the CIG Austin office on Tuesday and got previews of some of the stuff for gamescom and some stuff that won't be ready in time and was impressed. They're working hard and creating some great content with a crazy level of detail. Signed an NDA so no spoilers but it should be a good show with new stuff for several modules.

The wait sucks but from what I have seen it'll be worth it for the new modules. Hopefully Erin Roberts will keep them on track schedule wise, he seems to have with S42 at least.

I'm going to be looking really hard at a 4K monitor now, some of the upcoming content will make it even more worth it. Haven't really got much use out of my 3 monitor setup in games lately due to poor game support.

He was the guy behind the much maligned Battlecruiser 3000AD back in the nineties. Much like John Romero, he became the industry's whipping boy, so to speak. But I also know his publisher rushed the game out before it was ready. At the same time, Smart shouldn't have promised more than what he could reasonably deliver on time and on budget. With that said, I do admire his passion for the genre, but not much else.

I posted links to his blogs because he does have some valid points, and while I would like Star Citizen to succeed as I am a fan of the genre - growing up on the Wing Commander series myself, I am afraid that it won't end well for those of you who have lots of money invested in the game. If you guys want to dismiss him as a troll, that's on you, and I'm not going to entrench myself to start a flame war on this thread defending his position. I am merely presenting another side to the coin so you can form your own opinions about the health of the project - which I myself do find worrying.

Sorry you're worried, wish you had waited till release so you wouldn't be. Always sucks to worry about stuff.

As far as his valid points go, he's also wrong on a number of points. If he's not going to bother getting things right, I'm not going to bother reading anything else from him on the subject as he's an untrustworthy source.

EDIT: Can't find Koln poster yet.

Yeah i was disappointing to see they put them in the VD store when all past trophies have been normal pledge items, so now you can't buy a few to gift them to friends, or in your case melt the one to accidently picked up forgetting you get one for free and a normal sub, or 2 for free as an Imperator.

Which also makes you wonder, why they even put the Sub only one in the VD store any way since you can not gift VD purchases and they already gave you the trophy for free so there is no reason for more than one. unless they are going to be perm. additions to the store now and not only be temp items. that go away after a week or 2. so future subs can pick them up at a later date.

I ended up melting the freelancer model and Delta model for the credit to buy the UEC to buy the normal trophy and the poster, i have 2 sub exclusive ones that they gave me.

I looks like they did it so that people can't sell them on the grey market. Some would buy then by the dozens and sell them at a markup long after the period of availability was over.

This fixes price gouging and also the exploiting other backers to inflate the amount of money spent on an account trick these people were doing.

During gamescom they are doing a 'flash sale', these are back in the store with 24 month insurance:
Retaliator, Carrack, Caterpillar, Orion, Reclaimer, Khartu-al, Merchantman

As an Amazon Associate, HardForum may earn from qualifying purchases.
Good choice, I have a DX Racer and love it.

FYI, got all the trophies now in my hangar, Gamescon 2943, Gamescon 2944, PAX 2014, and both Gamescon 2945 (normal and subscriber), all I'm missing is the damn "golden ticket". The 2943 looks a little dull now compared to the rest :-(

EDIT: Free Glaive, lucky cosplayers!!!!

I see a Sapphire 390X box and a couple X55 Rhinos on the table for the giveaways

I wonder if the Glaive is going to be in the store in limited sale or only an even give away.

no idea.

seems like an event only item, it is "better" than the scythe and they dont want to sell the scythe, so if they do sell the glaive then the scythe would really be just a trophy ship.

so not sure how their view on that really is.

So, Social module should be end of this month, but FPS moved to end of next month
