Galaxy Note 4

As much as I like the specs on the Note line, I can't deal with the size of the phones. I have small/medium sized hands, and the Note is just to big for me to use comfortably. I really hope company's start to follow LG's lead in that department since the G3 is so far ahead of the competition in terms of screen size to overall size ratio. 2014 has been a boring year in terms of cell phones. I have had zero reason to consider ditching my G2, and nothing on the horizon (that we know of) is really worth it either.

So now I need special goggles and LSD?

I'm sure all of these things are noticeable under 15,000x magnification spectrometer cross-pollination analysis, but let's be real here... nobody's going to notice that on a regular basis. If you notice that without squinting and staring super-hard at the screen, you're experiencing some kind of placebo-like effect. "I've seen it once before and now I can't get it out of my mind!"

Once again you presume to know what I see... Don't believe it if you don't want to, doesn't mean I'm making it up...

Would I love updates 1 week after google? Of course. Do I expect it? No. In lieu of a plethora of critical vulnerabilities is 18 months between updates in any way on this Earth acceptable? Hell no.

Put it this way Samsung and all of them could get updates out within a week of Google. They seriously could. They choose not to. That a bunch of teenagers living in their parent's basement on XDA can, without any access to drivers or source code, reverse engineer ROMs within days of Samsung releasing them and generate custom images...shows how easy it is, even when you are hamstrung by not having source/drivers/etc.

It shows how truely pathetic the update effort for these OEMs is when a bunch of f'in teenagers can do a more timely job with no tools, no code, and no training. Just because everyone else is a bunch of schmucks too in no way excuses it.

You didn't answer the question which major OEM is significantly better than Samsung for updates? Also as much as you love XDA half the ROMs are broken or have unacceptable bugs that a major OEM that actually supports the product cannot release. Would I or anyone else love faster updates, free chocolate and whatever else? Of course but ultimately this comes down to competition if Samsung's main competition cannot do it who cares what a bunch of teens in their basement are doing.

Alot of your blame should be shifted from samsung to the carriers, they ultimately approve the updates, usually the international version of phones gets updates way quicker than the carrier version.

How about this, go to hardocp.com on a pentile screen phone, on the red boxes around the pictures there will be solid lines on the top and bottom, but on the left hand side where its jammed up to the side of the screen it will look jagged and dotted. This is because the red (also blue as well) pixels cannot be lined up in a row exactly in one of the directions (either horizontal or vertical, or both depending on the pixel arrangement). The right hand side will look odd as well because it will either use two sub pixels one line and one on the next or it will use just one per line giving an odd jagged line, or one on one line and skip the next line. It's super easy to pick out on any pentile screen. Rgb stripe doesn't have these issues because they can be lined up exactly in both directions.

Here's a pic of an example on what some do for straight lines, really depends on the pentile screen because the sub layouts change and each displays straight lines differently, but its pretty easy to pick out if its pentile or rgb stripe.

But haters gonna hate.

Well the picture you are posting is not a modern pentile screen. Look at it on a galaxy S4 or later phone its pretty good. The resolution is getting so dense its hard to tell. By the time they hit qhd at over 500 ppi its going to be really really nit picking if you can notice this on an AMOLED.

That looks allot like the s2 screen which did have a poor representation of Pentile. The S3 was bad too but tolerable, the S4 and on are pretty much awesome as far as I can tell...

Oh you mean like Samsung's its-about-damn-time-official-OTA-update for the S3 (which was as long in coming for the S3 as Note2)...which perma bricked phones, killed battery life, did a few other cool things...and was such a font of stability and professionally developed software that Samsung pulled the update off its servers within 24 hours to actually bother testing it and re-released it 1-2 weeks later?

Most ROMs I've tried lately run a hell of a lot better than that.

Funny that...in the case of my Note 2, "carrier delay" only constituted 7-10 days of that 18 month delay. "Way quicker" wasn't all that. So no, the blame is still on Samsung. If Google were still pushing out relatively major Android revisions I have a hunch we'd hear similar airings of grievances from Note 3 owners.

More and more, not a fan of Touchwiz, much prefer stock Android.

And finally a Nexus Phablet is coming out in October, a true AOSP Note competitor, by Google and Motorola in the 5.9" Nexus 6 Phablet. I think I'll get that Phablet over the Note 4.

Guess the GN4 won't have the rumored wrap around display.
I've got the GN2 and haven't had a compelling enough reason to upgrade yet. I'll go hands on with GN4 and then probably still wait for the Nexus 6 and go hands on with it before upgrading. Or maybe even not upgrading if both underwhelm

hmm, maybe I'll wait for this and not get a note 3 then.

torn between a note 3 or lumia 1520

Sigh, I so wish Nexus devices were available for Verizon users. I simply have no choice but Verizon where I am.

Indeed. Best thing you can do on Verizon for a Nexus experience is get a Moto X (or the next Moto flagship due out in a month or so) or One M8 (since it's the only current phone available on Verizon you can unlock the bootloader on) and flash a GPE ROM onto it.

If the note 4 is water resistant ill be buying my 3rd galaxy note in 2 years

Will the Galaxy Note 4 come with the Samsung ISOCELL camera?

The 16MP ISOCELL camera on the Galaxy S5 is clearly the best smartphone camera out there. GSMArena did a comparison a few weeks ago showing that the 16MP ISOCELL sensor beats out the Z2's 20MP sensor (which came nearly last in the test). This proves that megapixels mean nothing when it comes to camera quality.

I looked up that review, they did not say what you concluded in the slightest. It is a decent all around shooter, the Lumia 1020 is still king, considering that the Lumia 1020 is quite old now in the smartphone world I am surprised. Though at least samsung tried to improve, the Note 3 camera sucks and is probably one of the worse ones on a high end phone.

If they put front facing speakers on the Note, I would most likely go back to it. After having them on my One M8, I'm not sure I'm willing to give them up in my next phone. You can pretty much show anyone a video in any loud setting and they'll still hear it fine without you needing to cup the speaker like I did on my Note 2 (which was plenty loud too, but it doesn't compare to two stereo speakers facing towards you). Plus they just sound awesome in any other setting. Sony did it in the Z2 without adding much to the bezel, so Samsung should be able to do the same thing.

The only thing I miss on my M8 is the AMOLED display. So if HTC put and AMOLED display in their next flagship or if Samsung put front facing speakers on it, it would most likely convince me to trade my M8 for it.

I am excited to see how the upcoming Motorola 5.9" Nexus 6 Phablet will compete with the Note 4 this Fall ?

Will be neat to see if Google has special AOSP apps and customizations for a Phablet, like the S-Note stuff Samsung puts on the Note series, but done in stock Android.

Right now my next phone is either;

- Note 4
- Motorola Nexus 6 Phablet

I wouldn't count on forward facing speakers. They add a ton of bezel and Samsung is all about shrinking bezel.

Oh, I know and don't expect it at all. Just saying they would catch a lot more attention with it. Samsung didn't seem too concerned about shrinking bezels with the GS5 though, since they were considerably larger than the GS4s:

I don't think it would necessarily add a lot of bezel though if you look at the top of the One M8 and the Z2. If anything, the Note 4 looks like it could use a bit more chin at the bottom because it looks like it would be pretty awkward to hit the bottom buttons without grazing the display somewhere too.

If the leaked photos that came out today are legit, I like what Samsung did there. The bezels on the phone are very small and noticeably smaller that the Note 3. Which means that unless they increase the screen size (all indications say they haven't and will stick with 5.7 inch screen) the Note 4 should be physically smaller than the Note 3. Which is a good move in my opinion.

As a current G3 user, I'm a big fan of tiny bezels which maximize usable screen real estate.

I really like my G3 however as I still have a family member upgrade available I might be convinced to give my G3 to my dad and upgrade to the Note 4. Just depends on the specs and performance. Biggest selling point to me would be a QHD screen coupled with the amoled display. Now that would be beautiful. My only grip with my G3 is that laying in bed at night next to my girlfriend and her S5, my screen always looks a little dull by comparison. Really big fan of that S5 screen. By finally giving us an amoled panel that gets as bright as most LCDs Samsung I think really nailed it.

On a side note, I just installed the latest youtube APK that allows you to stream in 1440p on your phone. Just awesome. Videos are gorgeous. First practicable use of that QHD screen.

I'll take smaller bezel and larger screen over speakers. I can see the benefit of front facing stereo speakers on a tablet for group sharing but on a phone for solo use it's a waste of precious space. Give me 5.9 to 6", near 60fps gaming performance for the native display resolution, 4K 60fps video output for media streaming, 802.11ac 2x2 or better, longer battery life, etc. then I'll seriously consider upgrading again.

Oh wow, I didn't even notice that. I agree that the speakers would be awesome but I never really considered them. Maybe a single front facing speaker above the home button would make an appearance?

The phone was developed before it was standardized

So what?

FoxConn gets Apple's contracts because no one else is able to on 24 hours notice change how a part is designed/assembled and have it go into production on the line. Samsung could turn around and do 3.1 Type C if they wanted to, it isn't like they only have 24 hours to do it. They'll just use it as a marketing feature for the Note 5 and S6.

While I would be very happy to see it in the note 4; I don't see it happening

Have you ever worked in product development? It's not that simple since one of the major obstacles is FCC approval and all of the qualification and chamber testing that lead up to it.

Seeing as the product isn't even announced yet...or specs leaked yet. I doubt regulatory testing has happened yet, and further changing the USB controller chip and the physical port wouldn't impact it anyway.

Did you miss all of the leaks in this thread?

Might be the first time I'd rather have the exynos chip set over snapdragon if its really going to be ARMv8 and 20nm. The US versions will probably end up with s805 though.

As cool as this system of the hardware will be on the Note 4, and nice beautiful large screen.

Sadly it's still a yucky Touchwiz OS :( I am just burned out on TW. Much prefer stock vanilla Android. Wish there was a GPE Note 4 coming. Or hopefully CM12 ROM.

Historically it's been released around Sept time frame so no way any company would wait until last moment since they need time to rework if it fails certification. Any open port that's a potential EMI leak is one of the reasons why it needs to be FCC certified.

I know, I'm pretty disappointed.

Samsung is supposedly manufacturing Snapdragon for Qualcomm so we'll see if 805 turns out to be 20nm too.

According to the leak the N4 is shipping with 4.4.3 even though 4.4.4 has been out for a long time. Typical effing Samsung. Granted the differences are minor, but to me it shouts that their lackadaisical attitude towards updates is still present, it is just that a lack of major updates hides it a bit.

As far as chipset differences...how did the split Sammy Exynos/Snapdragon chipset phones in the past workout as far as support from ROMs go? I remember early on there was kerfuffle about refusing to support one or the other shen it came to split chipset phones-but did it ever die down?
