Tomb Raider reboot will make PC gamers "very, very happy"

I hope they patch the game soon. I enjoy playing in 3d and so im missing those effects The fix wont work for me since i need full screen

I don't like the movie experience in games either. If i wanted to watch a movie id watch a movie. This game is good though, im 49% of the way through and so far id give it a 7/10. It needs a witcher enhanced edition type patch though to get rid of all its flaws. These are the changes id love to see:

1- needs a higher difficulty setting with something like whats said here
2- remove as many quick time events as possible as they are awful
3- no auto correct movement across bridges, ladders, cliffs, etc
4- no slow motion scenes as it takes away all the danger and fear
5- no auto weapons/torches, crouches and no auto correct jumps. If my jump is not correct let me die

They could put all the changes above into a new difficulty setting and then for me it will be a GOTY contender easily. They could also fix these just for fun:

6- user reported bugs
7- menu interface is pretty awful
8- upgrade weapons/skills interface is awful

I'm not a quick time event fan but the devs could have gone in the opposite direction like Bethseda's sandbox games and been accused of having a lifeless game. The happy medium between the two are easier said than done. Tomb Raider's quick time events aren't long so there isn't a great reason to be super annoyed.

And about the slow mo in #4, there's hardly any of that except a few things like the upside down leg pull trap where I'd probably have to load my save a few times. Loading after you save is the flipside of annoyance. That takes away danger and fear too.

the game is excellent despite all the QTE's and cut-scenes...that is what is most surprising to me...normally this would severely diminish the overall quality of a lesser game but Tomb Raider has the opposite effect...feels very cinematic

I think the brevity of each QTE helps a whole lot.

Got an update from Steam. The screen camera effects (water, blood, glare) work in normal real screen mode now.

I was getting blood splatter on screen before but I'm not sure if it was the right way...it looked kinda corny...the glare and water I never realized were there until I saw those before/after windowed vs full screen images posted awhile back

blood splatter screenie before the patch...

I'm getting lens flare/droplet effects in exclusive full screen now. Her tressfx are not "hovering" 2" above her shoulders anymore and hair lies on her back (although hair is clipping through her model now). Also tessellation is not causing me crashes.

Lens flares in all their glory. Will have to turn tesselation back on. Everything cranked, no tressfx.

Thats why a survival mode where the changes i listed would only be present would please most people. Easy, Normal, Hard Mode = loads of quicktime events, automatic crouching, weapons etc. Survival Mode non of that.

There's a scene very early on where there's wolves coming out of the bushes in the dark. I thought hell yeah il have to be quick here as a bit of trepidation hit me, then a wolf comes at you and boom its slow mo time so you have about half an hour to move your mouse onto the wolf and shoot. Totally ruined would could have been an excellent scene. Remember lara's supposed to just be starting out, she isnt some hardened killer, but by using slow mo shes able to easily dispatch all the wolves and come away totally unscathed. That's a bit rubbish and was an opportunity missed.

Thats my biggest gripe with all the quicktime events and slow mo scenes is that they are just so easy. Theres no tension, fear or skill required. Still a good game but as iv said before it really needs a higher difficulty that add some fear and challenge into it.

It looks a lot better in the game.

yeah it does (I also moved to a point where both were right in my face, in game you are not always standing at that specific point) and it adds to the atmosphere a lot. Specially on that level where you are suppose to be blinded by those lights and fight your way. I personally enjoy it, makes it more immerse but i am sure some people prefer it off.

I am at like 30% and I bumped it up to hard. I usually play on hard, I dunno why I had it on normal for this but normal is way too easy, even hard has been easy. Really enjoying this so far though, great game.

Not the blood splatter. The new patch brought blood sticking to your camera screen, which window mode did before. And for bonus, the new effects don't bring on the windowed mode gray screen of death anymore!

Opportunity missed is a fair assessment of the wolf scene. They could have at least made the slow mo faster than that. At least there isn't too much of that, and the wolf scene only happened once. And yes, hard mode should be more than "enemies do more damage". I do hate that, which every game does it. It's worse though when Hard means "10 shots to the enemy's head before he dies".

Meh. Still crashing with tessellation.

/\ ah I havent turned mine back on but I guess I will leave it off for now. I think I will just finish this game today

so i patched and im using with exclusive fullscreen on, what difference am i supposed to see? it all looks the same, did i err? :D

Unless someone can tell me how to do this, my biggest pet peeve with this otherwise amazing game is that I cannot walk up to a ledge and drop to it and hang off it. Lara just sort of... falls off it. This would come in handy in a few situations I've been in and having her just run off a big ledge like a lemming is frustrating.

Anyone?

So far, as a pc gamer, this reboot is not making me very, very happy. This game just feels like such a limited and linear experience.

I'm also not enjoying the tone of the game. It feels too much like resident evil too me.

^^ YEAH!

fuck me bro i got the Survival Edition because of the alternate outfit and she looks like a sack of potatos wearing it

sounds good...hopefully the new patch will allow me to run the game with 'Exclusive Fullscreen' enabled...previously I had to disable it in the Options menu before loading the game and then re-enable it after the main game loads...also hope this fixes the issue where the SSAA setting sticks and doesn't reset to FXAA after shutting down and re-entering the game

they should have added the ability to fire from the hip rather then having to aim/target each enemy

Don't know how it is with PC controls, but with the xbox controller, you just push B when your're near any ledge, and you will automatically drop and hang off of it with 2 hands.

Is that the scramble button? I tried that and it only works on some ledges. Just feels inconsistent. Oh well, the rest of the game is awesome. Just wish the tombs were longer.

Anyone else getting a constant DC from Steam message when trying to enter the multiplayer when Steam is actually still connected?

Today was the first day I was going to try the multiplayer.

Yeah, I wish they were more like the Assassin Tombs in AC.

Same. Its pissing me off because there is a noticeable difference with it on or off. I'm waiting for a patch and a new driver update from Nvidia. :(

really? I do not notice that much difference. what should I really be looking for?

Just finished today. 100% complete, DAMN the game is good.

Ran it with the patch today with TressFX, Tesselation, FXAA, and 8x Aniso. Absolutely insane.

This is probably the best looking game on the market, with the qualifier that I don't have Crysis 3 and don't really intend to get it until the sales are on.

TressFX worked fine on my stock clocked MSI Lightning 680 but it does tend to chop things up a bit in heavy frequency scenes. IE wind moving objects all over the damn place including the hair.

Better than FarCry 3 as far as what I've played this year since they jumped the shark in that one towards the end and Tomb Raider manages to stay consistent the whole way through. A bit TOO much of Uncharted at times but I guess if you're going to take cues from anyone Naughty Dog is a pretty damn good standard to set.

Would like to see some more tomb exploration, more difficult puzzles in the next one. If you don't have the game, BUY IT ALREADY! :)

As far as crashing with tessellation on, I rolled back the Nvidia drivers to 310.90 (on a tip from someone on the Steam forums) and poof...no more crashing on my GTX 670.

I'm running at 1920x1080 with max settings (minus the fancy new hair) and vsync on with triple buffering and it usually stays around 60 FPS with dips into the 40's.

Give the older drivers a try...they worked well for me!!!

Happy tomb raiding!!!

the game was running nearly perfect for me before the patch but now I can't run the game using SSAA anymore...I have to use FXAA as any form of SSAA kills my frame rates and makes it a slide show...

Nice patch, fixed the lens flare effects and whatnot, and they also seem to have tweaked the TressFX. No longer weirdly hovers above her shoulders, though it now sometimes will clip through them. Better this way, though. Also, I've noticed that it seems her bangs are more "static" now, and I swear sometimes there will be shadows on her face for strand of hair that aren't visible. Maybe a new bug? Either way I think it's a vast improvement over the unpatched version.

Hopefully they fix the tessellation thing for nVidia soon. Runs great for me with everything maxed (even TressFX) except DoF, and using FXAA, no tessellation because it was causing me to crash. Sometimes I will see some slowdown in cutscenes but so far never in-game while playing.

I noticed the weird shadows with TressFX post-patch too :( So I'm playing without TressFX for now. Other than that, I'm about halfway through the game and it's been a total blast! I feel they did a great job with remaining faithful to the series while breaking new ground with some of the stylistic choices. Hopefully they will follow suit like Batman:AA and make a bigger and better sequel.

I'm thinking the real problem might be that SSAO wasnt actually running before, even though the menu option indicated so. Reason being I saw a lot of complaints about SSAO not kicking in for people, or the setting being lost every time they restarted. So now it really is on when you select it, and FPS suffers accordingly. I'd just stick to FXAA

yup the setting would never stick for me before and would always revert back to FXAA after a restart of the game...you're probably right about SSAA...it did seem weird that I was running it so easily with 4X SSAA...SSAA should always have been a killer to use

Wow, I'm glad I finished it before the patch. That's really obnoxious.

a spotlight in your face WOULD be blinding. and in this scene, that's exactly how they were used. So, you reaction there is exactly what was intended!

I work for a company that has two studios and copywriters, who daily send off copy to have it voiced, then we produce it.

That mispronunciation is likely the writer's fault, not the voice talent. it's not that hard to add: [KAHN-JEE] or somethin next to the word.

I wonder how much their writers get paid. I wonder this in a lot of games, especially skyrim (and a lot of recent games), because it all just seems so armature. I guarantee I could write better copy for any of the games released nowadays. However, i'd probably want more money than they pay their writers ><

Yeah I mean, there had to have been a VO director. It just seems like a huge oversight to me that characters are supposed to be scholarly about a subject, but make some basic mistakes, which they would have mostly erased in their first couple of years of study. Lara even goes on to read ancient chinese in the game. How the hell are you able to put the energy into reading chinese, but not bother to pronounce Japanese words (which are very easy) correctly.
