Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

Any idea how to do this? It does not prompt me to choose an install directory when I click on the download link in Origin...

In Origin->settings you can choose where you download and install games. So you can actually adjust where each game installs this way. This way should work for sure on fresh installs.

If all else fails and you don't want to redownload I suppose the symbolic link method (which is what typically people do with Steam and SSDs) should work.

1. Play Rush
2. Drop an ammo pack in one of the many, many chokepoints
3. Profit

Haven't actually played rush yet. So far I've only been able to really get a lot support points if I drop ammo on an engineer spamming RPGs or a snipers. But I like really attacking forward.

One thing I've noticed (which is a change from previous games) is that you might be able to destroy the drops? Not sure if maybe they've just run out, but I think I've seen grenades take out supply drops.

Ok. Thanks a lot. I suppose I'll re DL and watch a movie :/

You can give copying everything over a shot first though. Just set the new directory, start the download, pause, close origin, copy over, reopen Origin and see if it shows as done.

HUGE PROBLEM guys. I'm hoping someone can help me out. I downloaded Origin to my dedicated gaming SSD. I then downloaded BF3 and the game automatically installed to C: Program Files x86/Origin Games/. So I then moved this Origin Games folder to my SSD drive and moved the C: foldxer to the Recycling Bin. Created a new shortcut for BF3 from its new location on the SSD.

Now when I try to launch the game, Origin is telling me the game is not installed! It wants me to re-download the game. Is there a way to get Origin to open the game from its new location? I want this game installed on my SSD!

Make a symbolic link from where the game thinks it is installed to where it is really installed - works a treat. Link Shell Extension is an easy to use symbolic link creator.

On Caspian now that everyone has stingers, and everyone in the jets has AA heat seekers every 2 seconds all you hear is beep beep beep.

Even with stealth, and flares you can't avoid 10 freaking shots.

They really need to do something about planes. They server absolutely no purpose except to shoot down other planes. Either nerf the stingers or buff the jets. They could bring back dumb bombs and voila jets could actually do something against ground forces.

Its hilarious how infantry can destroy jets much easier than jets can kill infantry.

I feel the jets and helicopters are worthless, the aa is crazy overpowered.

Is there any point to being a Squad Leader?

I miss the integrated Squad VOIP. And Commander. A good commander with a good pub crew could turn the tides big time and direct things. As is it's just a giant clusterfuck of explosions and awesomeness.

There's just too many "easy" ways to kill jets/heli's with all the engineers, the AA placements, etc.

They need to find a way to limit it somewhat so that you don't have 10 rockets flying at you as soon as you come anywhere near a battlezone.

Is it still possible to buy BF3 that comes with the bonus maps? I looked on Origin and couldn't find it.

BF3 should go back to the system where you have AA emplacements.... worthless AA emplacements that a piper cub can set up a gunrun on you from 2.5 miles away.

Then remove any attempt to have mobile AA i mean whats more deadly to the enemy then a guy staring into the sky for 8 seconds getting a lock on ya right?!

Then lets give the F18 some 2000 pound JDAM's to drop on tanks all day long with no self-defense also allow the F18s to climb out of visual range of anything short a observetorys telescope.

but don't worry you guys will be able to pilot swap TV missiles as soon as you unlock it :p

I have the game, I really want to play the game, but playing the game at half the performance I played BC2 at is very off-setting.

So you want a new engine to play like the old engine?? Just dont work that way..

I know it sucks, but thats the joy of new engines on the PC. Look at crysis when it first came out. Nobody could play it, now everyone (well almost everyone) can max it with no problem

Im having deja voo with BF3, brings me back to BF2 days, running on a 6600gt and barely able to get high/med settings. Couple years later bought 2 6800GT's. I was soo happy to max that game out, it was like a whole new game..

Now im repeating the cycle with BF3..

What about the special edition? Didn't that come with the bonus map and some weapons unlocked?

Limited Edition owners will receive Back to Karkand (the extra maps I assume you are referring to), which is a BC2:Vietnam type DLC for free. All preorders from authorized distributors in western regions (not sure about others) were Limited Edition copies.

If you want Back to Karkand currently, you need to find a place selling the Limited Edition or buy the DLC when it is released.

The other preorder bonus which was available was the "Physical Warefare Pack" which had some weapons and unlocks. But this will be available to all BF3 players, it is only a timed a exclusive some places had (I believe Origin and Gamestop/Impulse only).

Other preorder bonuses were some dog tags depending on the place you preordered.

so...i dealt with being kicked from every server this evening by admin which is some sort of bug right now. i went into origin and attempted to repair the install which it went through some process, now Battlefield 3 shows up in Origin as "Ready to Install" ..odd...

so i click it to install it and it looks like it is doing something, but then never actually completes and i'm left with it saying ready to install....anyone seen this problem?

It is common - there is a workaround in the BF3 help thread.

Squad leaders can give out objectives for your squad. When i get to be squad leader i try to always give a command for where ever we're/I am about to go. You get 20 points every time someone dies because of you or a squad member at an objective you give out I think

I thought the same thing until I just spent about 6-7 rounds in a caspian border server with a duo that was amazing on the attack heli. The gunner was going something like 25/3 on the better rounds. Not really sure how they were doing it but they were definitely pro.

Whenever I try and fly/gun though, all I hear is the lock on beeping the entire time, which is maybe 30 seconds to a minute of trying to avoid shit before we inevitably go down. I used to be half decent in BF2 as the pilot, and I really want to be able to do that again.

I will say, I think some of the later unlocks will help a lot. The TV missile is the last heli unlock, and that thing was almost half of what was so great about the heli's in BF2. I think planes get their bombs later on too.

I do think they really need to speed up the planes/choppers. It would help make them useful on top of making them look less pathetic. Chances of that happening aren't exactly high though.

What settings are those of you out there playing at 2560x1600 with a single card setup? I'm getting smooth gameplay with ~50 fps playing on high with most advanced settings off. I honestly have no idea what Antialiasing Deferred, Antialiasing Post, Anisotropic Filtering, and Ambient Occlusion do though. I'd like to strike a balance between fps and image quality but I wouldn't know where to start with the whole juggling act between all these settings.

Well, first time posting in the main thread, but better late than never :p

The game is damn fun. It's not quite BF2 but that's ok, it doesn't need to be. Sometimes change is good and I like the feature blend of old and new.

The beta had me worried my rig wasn't going to cut it for the final build, but I was surprised to find out performance was actually up over beta. At least for me anyway, my minimum fps went up 5+ and gameplay feels smoother. I think i will hold out just that little bit further for this Ivy of Intel.

My main issue with the game, like many, is the multitude of launch bugs. I'm lucky that I haven't been hit with them frequently but i do find myself "rubber banding" on a handful of 64 player servers. i also had a quick screen flicker once or twice in a random match, but nothing game breaking .. yet.

I think this will be one of the first games in my gaming "career" that i totally forgot about SP and went right into MP.

Ok somepme plase tell me how to make Warfare pack activated? in my Origin the game is named BF3 limited edition, does this means the pack is already activared or?

Also, how is this code delivered in email? together with the product ID and order ID, or seperate?

Poop. I though the weapons pack was included in the special edition. So all I got was the extra map? That was a waste of $10.

What is the story with the dog tags? I got them but have no clue what to do with them and further more I have no idea how to get access to the bonus pack. I ordered the preorder from Amazon
