Rage sucks

Did ID ever actually say in an article that it was going to look the same on all three platforms, pc, xbox and ps3? I'm asking because I never actually heard that before. I thought the pc was going to get higher rez textures than the consoles?

What's funny is the fact that the PS3 got the fancy high rez textures, while we got the same crap the 360 got.

Well, now that I have played the game a little bit more I have to say that its not very good. All bugs and texture issues aside the game is really quite generic and so far has little to no story. Unless it can somehow drastically redeem itself in the last half of the game, which I dont see happening, I will consider this a lesson learned on buying into the hype and pre order mess. Knowing what we all know now I wish I woulda waited on this one. Oh well, live and learn I guess.

John Carmack: Developing RAGE for consoles was a big mistake, future titles will put priority on PC hardware....

omfg he is such a dork

while the quotes aren't quite as shocking as some are making them out to be, he does seem pretty clear that one of their biggest mistakes was focusing development concurrently on consoles and PC, and in the future, he will develop for PC first, console second.

Edit: this is actually a really fascinating interview if you care about game technology at all. He talks about the difference between programming "on the metal" on consoles vs at arms length on the PC, the software overhead of the graphics API, and how he is working with the vendors to avoid this overhead. He also talks about his future engine changes, which won't be a total re-write like tech5, but instead he will iterate (more like Epic UE3?) to include new features, and utilize PC hardware better but at 60 FPS and with only a 2 second level load time.

Well, when development on Rage began 6 years ago, consoles were actually pretty dang good. The fact that he failed to realize that the PC platform would continue to advance is disturbing to say the least.

That said, Rage is a pretty big success on the consoles as far as technology goes. The game looks just as good (quite a bit better in some cases) than most of the titles on consoles, and the game runs at a steady 60 fps to boot. It's just a shame that 99% of the console players will fail to appreciate this.

At least he admits he was in the wrong.

Amazing to read that after months of reading the likes of this:

http://www.dealspwn.com/id-expect-rage-sell-consoles-64079

Nothing but wall to wall focus on the consoles for this game. How important getting 60fps on the consoles was, etc. etc.

He REALLY didn't know going into it catering to the crappy console hardware a mistake? He's not that dumb.

I think he understands the gaming scene better than most of us do, it's not a failure to realise the problem, but a consciously made trade off, it financially makes sense to do lowest common denominator development while PC gamers are willing to buy consolized trash.

i have not played the game yet but i was planning on getting it once the price drops a little but i have to say i'm very disappointed by all of the bad reviews.. what a shame that ID could not come through for us especially since PC Gaming is THEIR domain.. THIS is what happens when developers diverge from PC ONLY titles to a multi-platform design from the beginning and in turn give us another poorly ported game..

all I can say is, I can't wait to hear Carmacks keynote next year :)

You got it.

Man just browsing through this thread, it reminds me of Fallout games on that awful Gamebryo engine. Guess I'll wait until everything gets ironed out or the price significantly drops before I pick this game up.

The Gamebryo engine is a pain,no doubt about it. But the games themselves are still fun to play with the open world,RPG type gameplay. They're no STALKER,to be sure, but they are entertaining. Rage is just another boring, uninspired linear shooter with graphics problems to boot.

On PC, I've put hundreds of hrs into FO3 and New Vegas, and have also successfully modded New Vegas with a 7gig texture pack and there's no game stopping bugs, all the bugs are minor and of no consequence in my experience.

New Vegas was definitely less bitchy for me but CTDs and such in FO3 are definitely game stoppers. ;)

As best I can determine Rage seems to have a nice engine with potential.

It runs perfectly (even alarmingly) well for me. It never goes above 50% GPU utilization on my GTX 560 Ti, i7 930 @ 4.0GHz and never drops below 60 FPS. It still feels choppy to me because I'm used to running 120Hz, but its tolerable. That said, the shooting gameplay is just so bog-standard bleh. The guns are uninteresting (though they do feel reasonably solid), the enemies take irritatingly large numbers of shots and the levels are super linear with no real reward for exploration. The driving is the only part that I feel like is really fun, sadly all I've driven for so far is to ferry myself between shooter sequences and to listen to NPCs ramble on about shit I don't care about. It's a nice glimpse into what SWTOR's dialog driven quest givers would be like if you couldn't just skip it all.

agreed

could be a lot of factors unknown to us, or he could be saying that to save face from all the hardware issues the game has been having on PC

l.

Weird as I found the opposite:eek:....oh well, when u factor in how many hrs these games go for and the whole world being rendered+all the info that has to be stored and updated etc, these games are pretty good.

Played some of it yesterday...this would have been a great game back in 2001. It's rather sad to see just how far behind Id is when it comes to game design. Doom 3 was antiquated when it came out, but Rage is positively prehistoric.

Willits & Co really should have paid more attention to their competition in the gaming scene instead of all the backslapping and egopumping like they've been doing in every interview for the last year ("we created FPS, we created deathmatch, we created the term" - no Willits, you didn't do anything...I'm pretty sure it was Carmack and Romero).

Can't even get the game to load any of my saves without hanging. Awesome.

Honestly, they could have called this Borderlands 2 and i wouldn't have noticed....

There is WAY too much similarity...

So... regardless of any change in any config, it won't alter the 60 frame cap? I know that one could do such with Doom 3. I didn't realize that it didn't work with RAGE.

We have not found out how to unlock the cap and we are very familiar with the past engines and commands used to unlock framerates.

.

D3 was antiquated?...on what basis.
Run it maxed on 26-27in LCD and use a decent set of 5.1's and it won't be so antiquated.
If anything, it seemed to go on forever.

We have many requests every day for a personal contact. We simply do not have the resources to contact each person. We are currently working on updating our graphics drivers, thus fixing the pop-in textures and allowing the wanted level of immersion. Thank you for playing our games.

---- My response after the last canned response below, their response to that above ----

How about you follow up with my request instead of just a canned response? Not only am I aggrivated about the game, but you won't even have a human contact me and discuss this with me logically.

New ATI drivers with Rage fixes...no official xfire support yet though. Oh and XP review drivers as well!

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU122AMDCat1110PreDriverV2.aspx

interesting so these fix the artifacts on the NPC's and the vsync problem. All that's left are;

Crossfire support- in official 11.10 eta 3 more weeks :(
Shitty textures- fixable only on nv hardware with mod?
Texture pop in- Fixable with config file mod

So in a month's time this game may actually be buy-able.

He probably should have actually tried or read up on it instead of stating it like a fact.

Yeah... I really didn't read any of this whole entire thread. In actuality, I've read all of it but I've been following other threads & sites about this as well. It's called getting the whole damn fiasco confused with other information in the mix.

Indeed. A favorite of mine.

I actually hated Borderlands due to all the reasons some people seem to be hating on this game.

Borderlands lacked the 'feel' that I expect out of a FPS. It felt clunky, and the tank viewing port FoV was horrible. Having to hit F8 everytime I got out of a vehicle or loaded up the game to force the FoV back to what I set it at was just stupid as well. I really just never enjoyed the game.

I agree, I also hated borderlands for this same reason. It just didn't feel right, the movement and shooting was just off.

Can you believe that both of these came from the same game?

2nd one makes me want to gouge my eyes with a ball point pen

well if its dark then you dont have to worry about making it look decent right?

To be fair, you can just as easily add the FOV bind to the movement keys so you'll always get the proper FOV.

And to me, it never felt clunky at all, it always seemed incredibly smooth TBH.
