The Router Recommendations Thread (Consumer)

will we be seeing any price drop on NetGear w3700 during the blackfriday or something?

Netgear has come out with a revision to the WNDR3700. Look for the "WNDR3700AV". It looks like the same router, but it comes with a lifetime warrenty. the "AV" version is also currently $5 cheaper then the standard version. It's a win win to buy the AV :D

does the WNDR3700AV have the same issue with the radio dying from use?

The radio issue was from the really old revisions over a year ago. Also, from those people flashing to custom firmwares. The custom firmware are still too immature. There is a new firmware around the corner that is to fix the remaining main bugs.

Hardware wise, both routers ARE THE EXACT SAME. This is confirmed on the netgear forums. However, since the AV is $5 cheaper and lifetime warranty... best to go with that. :c)

ohh! I read somewhere that the radio fails and its strictly a hardware problem?

I might buy it then if the radio won't die on me... but I guess lifetime warranty too is bonus

Nope, the radio problem is mostly related to the people flashing to DD-WRT which kills the radio. I heard this does not happen on any modern revisions you find at the store, but once again just avoid these custom firmwares all together until it's stable.

I hear a v2 is coming out of the 3700 that will double the ram. I'm looking forward to that if so!

Can anyone recommend me a strong non-adsl wireless router i need something that can give a verry good signal through a 2 story brick house and that will be able to stream hd movies from my nas plus normal associated trafic from 3 pc's

WNDR37AV vs WNDR3700? What's the difference. Also all these high-end routers have no external attennas what's up with that?

I read through all that.

Summary:

Netgear WND3700 or WND37AV (exact same router just different box)

Look for R21 or 02R1 (or 01r21 or 02r01) on the upc sticker on the box to make sure you get a revision 4 board. Previous revisions are slow to connect with the computer.

Also, you'll probably notice N600 on the box for a WND37AV (as opposed to N300 or 300 + 300 on the WND3700). But, it's the revision that matters.

The border on the box may be yellow or red, but it's usually (not always) red for the good revision. But, it's the actual revision number that matters, not the color. The router may even come in a black box too and just have RXX on it. Not sure what revision that one is, but it appears to work just fine.

Also, on the box where it mentions "wireless N specification" or something, it should not say "draft" anywhere if it's an R21 or newer.

Also, a higher revision of the board (like R22 or 02R2) should be good too. Just don't get an R15 or R17 or earlier as those ones have problems.

Even the WND3700's in the newer box (the WND37AV), will still not have the newest firmware available. You'll still have to goto the site and flash to the newest.

You can get the WND3700's for cheaper.

I don't know much about routers. I currently have a Linksys WRT54GL and my internet speeds have been absolute junk for the past few weeks. I finally called Comcast and ran the troubleshooting with them and it looks like its my router? Cleared this, cleared that, reset everything, blah, blah, blah... unplugged the router and ran it directly to my computer and my speedtest.com went from 0.22/0.32 to 8.22/0.99 (down/up). Can a router die without being dead?

I just ordered the Linksys E2000/WRT320N to replace an aging Zyxel X-550.

Does orientation matter? It's going in a cabinet and I can either sit it on a shelf or hang it on a wall. Will it make a difference either way?

My wife got a good job working for the state and they pay for continuing education. So she's going for her Masters.
I have a pc running Windows 7 Pro hooked to broadband cable and need a new wireless router.
We do almost no gaming. Mostly streaming music and videos.
With what my wife will be doing I'm looking for a Dual N certified router that can go through the concrete walls of our small apartment.
Needs to be able to wirelessly connect with the printer, a new laptop which is coming after the holidays and a NAS.
Would like the router to have 2 USB connectors in the back.
It doesn't have to be the fastest, either.
Above all is that it must be reliable.
Price is always a consideration but quality is more important.
I've read the last 4 or 5 pages of this thread and a whole bunch of reviews and am coming out of this more confused than before I started.
I'll appreciate any help/recomendations.
Thanks and Happy Holidays.

So you say you want 2 USB ports, but what exactly are you looking to do with them?

I'm going to just jump ahead and recommended the same one that's on the first page of this thread. the Netgear WNDR3700, The WNDR37AV might also be worth while since it has a lifetime warranty and seems geared towards streaming. Check out the video on the page to see what I mean

Hi, I am looking to replace my old Modem/Router WAG200G by Linksys.
I read some stuff, but couldnt find any DSL/Wireless-N Router combination, that supports Torrent.

SO here is what I am looking for;

1 - A good Modem/wireless-N combo device,
2 - USB's for attaching Drives for media sharing and also downloading torrents on em.
3 - Stand alone torrent capable device, so that PCs can be switched off. I read that there is a custom firmware etc that can be installed (tomato?), that, can allow the torrent clients. But, am not able to get the Modem/Router combo, that can be customized.

THANKS

pwrusr,
Thanks for the help.
I'm very new to networking so I may have been thinking that I needed more than I do.
I just looked at the video. It's interesting.
The reason I wanted 2 USB connectors is that 1 would be used for NAS and the other would be available for use to a printer for those times that I would want to be absolutely sure that there were no prying eyes looking at the documents. My wife's a psychologist specializing in adolescent behavior. That's why we need to be careful.
Another router I had looked at is the Trendnet TEW-673GRU.
Thanks again.

Hey Fellas,
Can someone tell me if what I am doing is overkill in terms of paying too much for a router?

This is my first time in setting up a network and what my router needs to have:
- Gigabit ports
- N band wireless

I have comcast coming into my motorola sb5120 (i think) modem in my spare bedroom on the second floor of my house. I PC GAME alot and compete with my team in alot of various tournaments and ladders (FPS games only). So this router will be right next to my gaming rig in the spare bedroom wired directly from router. I can't stress enough that the router can not affect my connection in any way - yes i'm that anal.

The only thing I will be using wireless for for the time being is my smartphone, and possibly a "work" laptop in the very near future, or i might purchase my own personal laptop.

I was very interested in using NetGear's Powerline adaptor that would come out of the outlet right behind my entertainment center and use a switch to connect my TV, Blue Ray, DVR, and my AVR receiver. I do NOT have any console, nor do I have any interest in purchasing one. I haven't nor am I sure I will get into streaming movies. I'm sort of old school and prefer putting a disc into my oppo player :)

Everyone talks about the WND37AV, and I'm down with buying it, but I get the feeling that it is overkill.

Thoughts?

I'm probably the newest kid on the block, but I think possibly overkill now leaves room for growth.
If it works that way in the world of networking.
Good luck.

I don't have DSL so I can't really reccommend a DSL Modem/router combo, but practically every router supports torrents so you really don't needf to worry too much about it. Hopefully someone who has DSL can help?

Any love, or hate... for the "Cisco" Small business RV/WRV lineup?

I need to replace an old failing wrt54g for a customer, one man shop, but he's very... picky. I'm hoping to get him something that's simple, rock solid, and can act as a vpn endpoint - price is not a big concern. I have a hard time picking something out for someone with such light needs, but I'd love to stick with a linksys/"cisco" branded box if they're not complete crap anymore? Any other recommendations for this application?

I'm gonna call the budget something like sub $300, beyond that I'd be looking at a real firewall. He'd prefer all in one, but I can get a separate AP if the RV042 or similar, is highly recommended.

Thanks

I just bought a WNDR3700 to upgrade my wireless network. I have two primary goals:

1. Get my one HTPC that is connected via wireless bridge (due to its location) out of the 2.4GHz band because of microwave interference; and

2. Move to 802.11n to increase bandwidth to handle additional wireless HTPCs.

Currently, I have my HTPC and Xbox 360 connected to a WRT54GL. The WRT54GL connects to my primary wireless router via bridge mode. I prefer to use a bridge instead of buying separate wireless adapters for the Xbox and HTPC. I'd appreciate any recommendations of wireless routers that I can use as a bridge to connect via 802.11n in the 5GHz range. DD-WRT compatibility is a big plus. Gigabit switched ports also a plus, but not that important.

I could just buy another WNDR3700, but I am looking for a less expensive option.

Currently considering:
Linksys E2000
Linksys WRT400N

Thanks.

What is a good, cheap, wireless N router that has good reception and run DDWRT or similar?
I now own a car shop and would like to have a public (existing wireless G WRT54G V3) and private (N) networks. Main router is a PFsense box. :)

Just grab a netgear WNDR3700 it'll do all you want with stock firmware. I think that they are working on porting ddwrt over to it as well since it's been such a popular router.

Dont know if anybody suggested it but i am running a wrt54gs with dd-wrt.. I love it!

maybe so but before i upgraded to pfsense that thing ran like a dream and who said it was a 6 yr old model... actually i was last's yr's model

what ever, its still a piece of garbage!

pfsense = way better, more control better security.

wow suprised you support pfsense.. normally you bash anything that's not runnin untangle lol. :D :p

no, there are a few units out there that i support, there are also a few units i use that stone doesn't like so 2 each their own.

I've been out of the networking game for awhile, and need some help picking a new router. I'll throw down some info that may or may not be useful.

My current router is a Linksys WRT54GS, on Rogers cable.
There will be 4 computers on it, 1 desktop wired, and 1 desktop + 2 laptops wireless. The 2 laptops are on the lower floor.
Most of the heavy usage will be streaming and rapidshare downloading, with other stuff like torrents and online games.
Budget is around $150.

This Linksys is the only name brand router I've ever had, and I went for it back then because I heard they're more user friendly. Overall I just want a really good router that's easy to deal with. Any advice you have on brands and models would be great.

Thanks
