If China Gets MS Office for $29, Why Don't We?

This is just like Capital one raising my interest rate 3% for no reason what so ever. I always pay over my balance every single month. I accidentally had my last payment scheduled 3 days before the next cycle so I double paid a cycle and didn't know I missed the next month payment. They call me and offer to lower my interest rate to 4% if I pay my bill now. So when I'm a good customer and make them tons of money they F me but when I'm a low life(on accident) they reward me. So dumb....

"Low life"'s huh? Tell me all about these "low life"s and how you feel about them.

You realize if you pay your balance on time you don't make them tons of money, sure they make their lions share from POS transactions fees but they also like people to pay late or less than full amounts, if you're a "low life" they get more money out of you in the long run.

Wow....really?

I never said anything about Obama or Bush, I never said anything about republican or democrat. I was simply pointing out that among America's current problems... in my opinion the issues relating to healthcare, education, etc... are much higher on my list of priorities than whether or not we are paying too much for Microsoft Office as a nation. I"m not trying to turn this political, I'm saying we should probably prioritize our issues. I think some of this starts with our journalists, I understand the article is quasi-topical info, but really in my mind of all the comparisons and things that need thought about.... this is way, way, way down the list.
; )

While you may believe otherwise, using the whole "We have bigger problems to worry about" is an irresponsible thing to run around saying at every problem you aren't concerned about. I don't know if you've noticed, but just about every important problem and issue that we have in this country is always discredited and mitigated by stupid shitty sayings like, "Obama gots a lots on his plate!", even by politicians and others who should be focusing on them. This isn't a current problem and has always plagued progress and is also a tool of those who wish to impede it.

It is similar to telling everyone who complains about anything that "Hey, people in Africa have it worse so stop whining!"

QFT...same thing here with KeyBank.

On the surface, it looks like a culture of piracy... but if you dig deeper Its also about their ability to pay. Their savings effectively goes to financing our government's deficit. We send them paper(bonds and other iou's) and they send us their goods(as cheap as they are, they do have value).

Yeah the 'regular' price wouldn't move many copies, and I suspect MS would like to gain some substantial penetration in the market.

Well it seems as if we are getting a different kind of penetration in our market.....I think that is ludicrous, I've always been a quality customer to MS and I think they should give us some kind of "loyalty" discount or something I mean it's not like I'm gonna use XP on my computer if I just purchased Vista. Cut us some slack MS.

I have always wondered why we get shafted like this. Obviously “crime doesn’t pay” does not apply to China. I don’t suppose it would be as bad if they weren’t doing this to "combat" piracy.

Because you set the prices of your IP based on what the market can afford.
You know that $75.00 book you bought in college for <insert course>? In India it probably cost $10.00 (or less).

I really don't get why it pisses you off that they factor piracy into the equation. You're certainly not getting shafted because it's cheaper in China. The price of Windows is about the same today as it was when 3.x came out. Adjusted for inflation, it's cheaper.

The Home Premium upgrade price is about 2x the Dos 5.0 upgrade (and up until 7/11, it was the same price). Retail for full versions is ridiculous, but I've never paid that price, and I'm not sure why anyone on these boards would do it either.

Besides, it's not like you live in the EU, where prices are almost 2x what we pay (and they don't get a web browser ;) )

Damned Chinese make more money relative to their economy than we do. I barely make enough to pay the rent and bills; a fucking copy of Office would break me in half, and get my car repossessed for late payment.

If M$ were to cut Office to $100 even, they'd get a run on it the likes they've never seen. Same goes for Windows: if it were cut to $50, everyone and his mother would buy it, and they'd STILL bank.

But, we must remember that screwing customers is the great Amurrikin way...

I've seen Office available for under $100.00 on a regular basis, for students (office 2007 ultimate has been as low as $60.00) and generally speaking Students include kids in Highschool, if not K-12.

Most home users need at most, outlook, word and excel....and most, probably, won't use Excel.

If you want deals, you have to look for them. read the Hot Deals forum, slickdeals, or fatwallet. Deals on Office are definitely out there....and even if you don't have a kid in school, I'm sure you've got a friend who has a kid that qualifies. Just get it through them.

You must've voted for Obama....

As for healthcare.... you make me laugh. I don't have any health insurance... last time I was sick enough to go to the doctor, I went to a walk-in clinic. They saw me, took a quick blood test to find out if it was viral or bacterial. It came back as bacterial in about 15 minutes. They gave me a prescription that was free. Total cost of the doctor visit was $70.

True... insurance costs are way out of line.. as well as the insurance companies shafting you every chance they can get.... you think Obama-care is going to take care of that... BWAHAHAHAHA.. he doesn't even know what is in the bill because he hasn't read it.

Education: public schools in general are super crappy. They are more interested in teaching their left wing liberal views and sex-ed to 5 year olds than any actual education.

I went to a private school and was home-schooled also... when I graduated and then took my SATs, I was getting all kinds of mail from ivy-league colleges. Some of them even contacted my private school wanting to know how so many students there were getting such high SAT scores. It is called a real education.

Workers rights???? huh... what is wrong with "workers rights" in the US? The fact that you can be fired if you are lazy and/or break company policy and/or are disrespectful to your employer, steal, etc???? You want to be like some places in Europe where the employee is not able to be fired except under very extreme circumstances?

Personal freedom??? What are you talking about? If you did vote for Obama you personally voted to get your freedoms taken away and you can say "Welcome to the USSA" here in not to long if he gets his way.

And you voted for Palin... :tard:

And welcome to the "Corporate States of Amerikkka", where the corporations own everything and everyone, and you lick their taints hoping for a handout.

"Insurance" is just legalized betting.. and it's a sucker's bet. Linking that to "healthcare" is like putting a pile of money in front of Cheney and handing him a shotgun--someone's gonna get shot and the money taken. Again, another sucker's bet... and millions can't afford ANYTHING at all, and have to suffer needlessly, when the trillions going to a friggin' oil war have disappeared into Cheney's pockets forever--much like the vaunted Republican bank handouts. "Treason for Profit", anyone??

Education sucks because "ultra-conservatives" have polluted the education boards and diluted the curriculum with BS like "abstinence only" and "scientific creationism", not to mention marginalizing important historic figures because they're not white and male.

Right now, in most states, workers have NO rights whatsoever--they can be fired for just breathing wrong, for no reason whatsoever. The employers have held the upper hand since 2003, and have created a state of fear in most employees--not to mention contributed to the "Impoverishment of America", where all the skilled jobs are either being outsourced to India or China, or being replaced by H1N1 imports that replace American workers for half what the American made. Oh, and let's not forget that the rest of the employers are replacing full-time employees with part-time, so they can eliminate health benefits (see a pattern, here?), saving 50% per worker; and cutting base pay about 30%.

See where this is going???

In case you're too dim to spot it: pretty soon, EVERYONE will be dirt-poor, and unable to buy diddly-squat. The only people above the poverty level will be the hyper-rich and the politicians, who will become the new aristocracy. Of course, this will mean that pretty much every company that ever made a dollar selling consumer goods will go under because NO ONE WILL EFFING BE ABLE TO AFFORD TO BUY ANYTHING ANYMORE!!!

Yeah, bud: you and yer rePUBIClan buddies are so smart you're going to bankrupt the nation, and leave yourself with no way whatsoever to make a buck--of course, if you're like the rest of your gang, you'll abscond with the cash to the nearest non-extradiction country, where we can only hope the natives will cut your throats and steal your money. At least we'll get justice that way.

Sounds like you need to find a better paying job.

or 16 years old

I find that offensive, I can generally manage to formulate an argument without reverting to name-calling random accusations based off of false propaganda. Although I must admit that I do get distracted easily, and try to bring politics into places where it is not wanted and certainly not needed.

where all the skilled jobs are either being outsourced to India or China, or being replaced by H1N1 imports that replace American workers for half what the American made. .

Oh fuck! American workers are being replaced by viruses! That is AMAZING.

Tell me, how does a swine flu virus use Visual Studio?

I assume you meant H1B and it is a MYTH that H1B workers cost less to hire than US citizens. Sorry dude. The federal regulations are pretty clear on that. In fact many times it costs more due to relocation and legal costs related to bringing an H1B guy on board. Then the salary is tied to the position. If a US company is hiring H1Bs at lower wages than US citizens doing the same work then they are in violation of the law. Feel free to go to court over it.

Where I work we hire H1B folks because our universities don't churn out enough CS guys. Or if they do they're lightweight web weenies who can't code worth shit. Hiring an H1B guy is a huge PITA. It's epic paperwork. Gobs of legal BS and fees. Gimme a good ole' American engineer any-day, if I can find one that can pass an interview loop. And no, hello world in HTML doesn't cut it.

Just because someone doesn't share your opinion/views doesn't mean they're trolling.

I support your view in this entirely, but I think he is justified in classifying it as trolling because of the offensive manner in which everything is stated, to provoke an argument rather then intelligent discussion. Then the ridiculous logic that is prevalent, ie: the "I never need healthcare, so why should anyone else" statement. The obvious falsities, "teaching sex ed. to 5 year olds", incidentally I cannot quite recall whether it was 5 year olds, or children in grade 5, which is quite a gap, many apologies if I misquote there. I absolutely hate when people dismiss other peoples views, merely because they do not fit in with there own, but in this case the argument is not logical, and appears to be an attempt to drag politics into this thread in an effort to start another political argument.

What? An article full of bigotry from Steve when it comes to Chinese people? Say it ain't so!

Surely you all expected this. Thanks, but we get the message, Steve. You hate Chinese people. They are thieving bastards and cheats who are up to no good stealing the American advantage. Whenever China falters behind the US in any social or economic aspect, you're there to shoot them full of your venom. Whenever it's the other way around, you're there to complain about them.

Nothing to see here, moving along.

And you voted for Palin... :tard:

Lesser of two evils.... I am originally from AZ and was not too keen on McCain in the first place... too wishy washy.

And welcome to the "Corporate States of Amerikkka", where the corporations own everything and everyone, and you lick their taints hoping for a handout.

And we see how that all worked out... look at the auto makers. Now the Government essentially owns a lot of that.... and a lot of the reason the auto makers have/had issues was/is because of the "unions". Line workers here in AL making over $20 an hour plus insurance, retirement, etc. to sit on their rear and stick stickers on parts... gimme a break.
Not to mention if a union worker refused to do stuff and you had to end up doing it, they could complain that you did it and get 4-6 hours extra pay out of it... SCREW THAT!
Yes... I worked at a factory doing IT support.... they ran us rugged and paid us squat... no insurance or any other benefits whatsoever.

"Insurance" is just legalized betting.. and it's a sucker's bet. I absolutely refuse to take a contract or contract-to hire position at ANY company anymore... they tell you they are going to hire you on full time after a specified amount of time and then they just keep putting it off all the while saying they are trying to get your hire approved and then eventually say.. seeya.

Can't expect much more from a fat lard. Freedom fries anyone?

Canadians could buy Office 2007 3-user for $49 Canadian during boxing week (week after Xmas) at every retailer.

Thats just about $40US, and the piracy rates here in Canada are just about the same as the US.

Office penetration in Canada is low, Vista is actually quite low too. Microsoft seems to give deals out to areas where they don't have unquestionable dominance, it doesn't seem to be a matter of money or piracy.

just a case of monopoly.
See this is why competition is good. Without competition innovation stagnates and prices rise

Still, we Westerners have been paying through the nose for Office for almost two decades. If anyone deserves a price break, it's us--not the thieving Chinese.

How bout you use "White people (or trash)" instead of "Westerners", racist fuck. Like there aren't any of us around this part of the hemisphere, amiright?

Technically, if you're on this hemisphere you are a westerner. I'm not sure that's really a racist comment compared to a geographical one. Afterall, if you're a white guy in China, you can still get a good deal on Office simply because of your geographical location. So calm down and stop playing the race card.

be realsitic here... how many of you would buy it for 29$ rather than pirate it on the dozen or so pcs you help fix each year?

westerners=western hemisphere... its a different way of life. trust me... my fiance's family is from laos... they are much different than their family in america.

westerners is one of the most non-racist terms ever. lol...

Dang, Kyle! The guy was spot on mirroring the article. The article passes muster but his sarcasm didn't? So racism is sometimes condoned and other times decried at [H]? That's the message you send by booting him.

China brought on their reputation for piracy themselves. Don't try and pin the race card on the [H]. I suppose you'd call us out if we complained about Russia and Nigeria spamming and scamming people in email as well? We know your passion for China, but try not to let it cloud your judgment.

Besides, the [H] didn't write the article. David Coursey of Yahoo did.

China is a HUGE market.... That article said that 95% of ALL MS office copies in China are illegal. That is redic.... How many companies are using illegal products throughout every computer they own.

I normally dont butt into peoples conversations but I cant believe the ignorance.

Lesser of two evils.... I am originally from AZ and was not too keen on McCain in the first place... too wishy washy.

Shes definitely the lesser of everything. Her camp and McCains have been tearing each-other a new a-hole since the election. They each had a classic republican Blame-Storming session. It was hilarious, but sad really, so see them so drunk with power and money that they thought they could hoodwink the voters.

Quitting her gubernatorial career because of paranoia and insane finger pointing at Obama administration and McCain at everything from her own popularity & reputation dump, to her teenage daughter's reckless behavior that she doesnt think she should be judged as a parent for. She shows NO responsibility for ANY of her own SHIT. What the hell is wrong with her voters? On-top of that, she abused her power to separate a Father from his Children by getting him fired, for her Sister. Forget her man, seriously, shes a deplorable excuse for a human being, and to see anyone support her removes all sense of credibility from that persons argument.

Take it from a Russian's point of view... her paranoia towards both her own party nationally, her party locally, employees past & present, and the democrats both nationally and locally, followed by such flagrant abuse of power she thought she could both get away with and cover up, is authentic, classic, Stalinist era totalitarian horse-shit, and its no wonder she has her own Personality-Cult already. She is insane. Like for real insane.

Yes... I worked at a factory doing IT support.... they ran us rugged and paid us squat... no insurance or any other benefits whatsoever.

The logic used to launch the automaker bailout was the same logic that was used for the bailout of the Airlines after 9/11. You should note that the govt *made* taxpayers money during that bailout that the republicans so vehemently opposed, and the prez only signed because we were about to be reduced to one airline for the whole country.

And that is why I personally don't have insurance.... tried it, got burned, got rid of it. Cheaper to just pay the money up front for the most part... and you can get cheaper rates from doctor's offices since you are paying cash.

You got burned by insurance because we dont have the kind of protection that other both westernized and modernized countries enjoy. Like Canada, UK, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Germany, France, Spain, and the list goes on. What you bloody dont want me to start listing are the 3rd world countries that our own WHO organization labels as having more health-care access than us. Like Cuba & Venezuala.

What? When was the last time you saw ANY of that in a public school?

Abstinence Only was taught openly during the Bush era, and was the only program to get funding. Creationism is on the curriculum of many public schools and just about every school in Kansas. Even though its so blatantly false it undermines peoples belief in Christianity as they grow old enough and gain worldly exposure with easy travel and the internet, to begin to question things they know/believe, out of shear variety anxiety.

And the self proclaimed "real" Christians who have "saved" their purity by denying themselves a "liberal" education are not "pure" enough to see that their own antagonism and arrogance towards those who see the same things they do and come to different conclusions but with sizable amounts of evidence they actually have to think about to refute and not just sit back and digest like a sunday sermon. Refusing to see that interpreting biblical writing with literal blindness and contradicting the beliefs that the majority of the christian world already believed were flavorful exaggerations in the first place, is the cause for their dwindling numbers.

And dont get me started on how they equate their faith with morality and push this garbage into law.

Yes.. that does suck.... I absolutely refuse to take a contract or contract-to hire position at ANY company anymore... they tell you they are going to hire you on full time after a specified amount of time and then they just keep putting it off all the while saying they are trying to get your hire approved and then eventually say.. seeya.

So you have experienced this "suck" in one way or another. What you havnt offered is either a solution or a rebuttal to the Obama administration's solution of offering a Public insurance plan alongside the private ones, which is what I presume you oppose as your fear of the USSA.

And the government running everything is going to fix this? Since when is the government able to be remotely efficient at anything?

What you are saying will happen is definitely going to happen if the government runs everything.

Its already happening, in fact it collapsed about half a year before this election, after 8 years of asinine regan-era Trickle-Down Trust-the-Corporations to spread the wealth Bullshit. Greenspan himself came out in a huge news article and said he was wrong to presume the market could regulate itself sufficiently and then followed with advice on how to curb the possibility of this crash happening again.

Ummm... ok... if you say so

He's right, the deregulation of the housing market and lack of health-care regulation have bankrupted more Americans than WWII and sunk is into a national debt reliance on China.

How old are you, do you have non-insured children or elderly parents? And before you say that close-to-free insurance is available for poor children, think about what happens when their Grow-Up parent gets sick, jobless, bankrupt, and impoverished. Oh, and statistically, its not the poor that go bankrupt after sickness and joblessness, its the middle class that suffers the most.

Public insurance options are not just a health insurance possibility for the poor, its A SOCIAL INSURANCE for the health of the entire Nation, Rich and all, to curb everything from petty theft to drug gang warfare that is FED BY POVERTY. The belief that an impoverished person would turn to drug dealing over an available job with health insurance as a means out of working their way to stability is republican fear-fed fox-spread horseshit.

True... insurance costs are way out of line.. as well as the insurance companies shafting you every chance they can get.... you think Obama-care is going to take care of that... BWAHAHAHAHA.. he doesn't even know what is in the bill because he hasn't read it.

Please, by all means, tell us of a better solution that your or any of the republicans even dared to suggest that could possibly lower costs for regular people without giving most of the money to the insurance agencies instead of making them complete like a real businesses in the first place?

Education: public schools in general are super crappy. They are more interested in teaching their left wing liberal views and sex-ed to 5 year olds than any actual education.

Some of them even contacted my private school wanting to know how so many students there were getting such high SAT scores. It is called a real education.

Your worst piece of nonsense yet. Public education is poor where the schools lack the funds. I went to an inner city school for a few years, then my fam moved out to the suburbs and I went to a well funded public school. It was and still is #1 in all of western new york, Williamsville North HS. Beating out every private school across the board.

By comparison, private schools in the area receive up to 40x more funding from attendees than our public HS. And failed to meet our NY Regents criteria. Where as my inner city public school (Campus East) fell to shit on that list.

The real reason private school kids can get ahead is not because of What they know, but because of Who they and their parents know when they get out. As well as already having a secure parental financial base. If reasoning skills and pools of knowledge were actually tested on employment applications and results forced to be made available to the applicants, like a fair, non-biased entry examination.. your private school kids elitist lack of exposure, social skills diversity and self-questioning critical & analytical skills would shrivel their opportunities.

Workers rights???? huh... what is wrong with "workers rights" in the US? The problem with your point of view is that you're fine with companies treating people like objects and not people. People are not disposable commodities. If you let them be treated as such, be prepared for social & class warfare akin to that which gave birth to communism. Nobody gives the communists enough credit for scaring the shit out of governments that had no workers rights.. for guaranteeing everything from sick pay, to maternity leave and putting a limit on work hours and appropriate age limits. Welfare and workplace health-care grew out of this fear as an eventuality to compete with the guarantees in the old Soviet system. It took fear to show the corporate world that human beings are not disposable, and we're not willing to go back, so sorry.

Personal freedom??? What are you talking about? If you did vote for Obama you personally voted to get your freedoms taken away and you can say "Welcome to the USSA" here in not to long if he gets his way.

I was born in the USSR in 1983 and came over in 1992, its bewildering to watch people who dont know what they talk about compare the two. I could give a full impassioned dissertation against that little paragraph on its own, but I feel I have already let my passions fule a more-than-lengthy response. Good day.

I feel like this community, more than any other I've been to on the internet, could benefit from taking Econ 101 along with a basic public policy course. Of course, I'm sure the participants wouldn't trust those "lib college professors," but maybe they'd at least learn what liberalism actually is.

At the very least you should all read the Wikipedia entry on Price Discrimination that someone posted earlier.

China's wages are far lower and if put proportioned to average US wages, it actually makes office more expensive in China. China's electronic products (that aren't fake) are actually far more expensive than back home. I am in China right now for a month and I can say that PC's here are about $300-500 US more than they should be (retail).

Besides that, the article posted is pretty offensive to call people thieves, but theirs so many alternatives to office that are cheap or free, as well as many ways to get office or similar programs for free that it really doesn't matter.

Damned Chinese make more money relative to their economy than we do.
wat

Where I work we hire H1B folks because our universities don't churn out enough CS guys. Or if they do they're lightweight web weenies who can't code worth shit. Hiring an H1B guy is a huge PITA. It's epic paperwork. Gobs of legal BS and fees. Gimme a good ole' American engineer any-day, if I can find one that can pass an interview loop. And no, hello world in HTML doesn't cut it.

We don't churn out CS students because the certain administrations didn't seem to think it was important to send people to college and simply did a lot of "Hurumph hurumph" and much ado about nothing, when it came to education. Hell, look at what "standardized" testing has done to our K-12 schooling, which the teachers absolutely hate.

Yes.. that does suck.... I absolutely refuse to take a contract or contract-to hire position at ANY company anymore... they tell you they are going to hire you on full time after a specified amount of time and then they just keep putting it off all the while saying they are trying to get your hire approved and then eventually say.. seeya.

I agree with this statement 200%. Contract and temp work pretty much destroyed my optimism when it comes to workplace "promises" of "raises" or anything else, especially after working at Sprint for 60+ hours a week and fixing even the manager's and engineer's fuck ups for a year and a half being promised the world the whole time, only to be let go using technicalities in the temp worker contract due to a spiteful and incompetent manager wanting to do me in.

He's just a kettle calling the pot black. ;)

And you're the sore loser looking for opportunistic, fallacious, cheap shots.

I normally dont butt into peoples conversations but I cant believe the ignorance.
Please do it more. This forum is full of this garbage, and your objective outlook is greatly needed here. However, your fancy pants speech skills are probably going to offend the ignorant masses, just like Obama's orator skills have somehow became a sort of talking point of condemnation and patronization.

I'm almost tempted to link you to every thread where the shit you just responded to runs rampant so you can purge them.

You are entirely correct, Azhar. Reputations are often born of one's own actions, even if they are mistaken reputations. [H] clearly didn't write the article, of course and no one is saying they did. But I just think banning the guy sends a particular message that implied racism is acceptable towards certain groups yet not towards others. Then again I've never heard the Nigerians or Russians you mentioned earlier referred to with the same racial epithets we regularly see here.
