Need advice on keeping my laptop cool during gaming, please

Many thanks, VanGogh. Throttlestop has saved the day. Just checked "disable Turbo Boost" and bang, my laptop now games much cooler and quieter! OK, my fps is down from 121 to 85, but this is a price worth paying and I seriously doubt my eyes would notice the difference, anyway. Now, my CPU is...

Need advice on keeping my laptop cool during gaming, please

Many thanks SmokedBrisket and VanGogh for your detailed and helpful replies. I will test my temps with HWInfo, thanks, first I need to learn how to set it up. I've reduced the AA and other quality settings in the game, and am getting 121 fps in the in-game benchmark. But my system is still...

Need advice on keeping my laptop cool during gaming, please

Hi Guys, OK, I am not actually overclocking my CPU, but I wasn't sure where else to put this thread since it's largely about cooling. Here are my laptop system specs: Chassis and display: Manufacturer: Quanta Model: NL5E Proteus Series: 15.6" Full HD 144Hz 72% NTSC LED Widescreen (1920x1080)...

    Wireless router interfaces – help

Many thanks, guys, for trying to explain this to me. I appreciate that this probably seems like a simple question to you all. I think I understand it now. So the router IP/default gateway IP handle the internal traffic, and the Internet IP is the interface you use to get out of your own network...

    Wireless router interfaces – help

Hi Guys, I'm trying to set up a basic routing network in Cisco Packet Tracer. But I'm having some conceptual problems understanding what I need to do with the wireless router interfaces. I've asked on the Cisco forums and, while eager to help, they are mainly networking pros who don't seem able...

    Help with i7-4770K overclock

Thanks once again, Alpha, that's very useful to know. You rock! :) That's interesting, Pasic, I will have to look into that. I don't think I'm going to mess much more with OC'ing the system now as I've apparently got something reasonably fast and stable. But we'll see - I might just be tempted...

    Help with i7-4770K overclock

Thanks again. I've tried specifying 1866 MHz in the BIOS, but I don't know enough about CPU-Z to know if it's now running at the correct speed. Could you let me know, please? The BIOS reports 1866 in one place and 1333 in another. It's confusing.

    Help with i7-4770K overclock

Thanks, Alpha. I've never tried to OC my RAM, just the CPU. I just want to check my RAM is running at its rated stock speed. But a frequency of 667.7 MHz, not 933 MHz, doesn't sound right? I'll look in my BIOS to see if I can see any obvious other changes. Mobo is ASUS Z87-A. Thanks!

    Help with i7-4770K overclock

Update: My DRAM frequency is only 667.7 MHz, not 933 MHz as you mentioned it should be - should I be worried?

    Help with i7-4770K overclock

Many thanks, guys. I set the BIOS power plan to Performance and disabled SpeedStep. Now my system seems to be running at a solid 4.3 GHz. But something strange has happened. The multiplier has shrunk from 45 to 43, so I can no longer overclock at 4.5 GHz, as I was doing before. The BIOS won't...

    Help with i7-4770K overclock

Hi Guys, 1) I was overclocking my CPU quite happily on air under Win 7 at 4.5 GHz stable. But since I last weekend went over to Win 10, I no longer seem to have that stable overclock. Instead, looking at CPU-Z (latest version), my CPU speed and multipiler seem to be jumping around quite a bit...

    Display advice

Thanks Bandalo. I was looking at Dell Ultrasharp, but they seem to have response times of 8ms, and I was ideally looking for 5ms or below. What would be the advantage of 2560x1440? Would I have to scale up the display on Win 7 to cope with that high res? Budget: wouldn't want to pay more...

    Display advice

Hi Guys, I've decided to upgrade my monitor, and then my GPU later. I'm looking ideally for a compromise between good for text/office apps and casual gaming (Total War etc.). I read online that 23-inch is a good size for a multi-purpose HD widescreen. Preferably I want a display *without*...

    What Nvidia card now?

That's right, it's a 19" 1280x1024 non-widescreen. I'm holding onto it because I prefer this aspect ratio to widescreen and it fits on my desk at the right distance and size for my eyes to use for my work :) Hmmm...one guy's recommending the 1060 - why should I go for that instead of the 1070...

    What Nvidia card now?

Thanks guys, it sounds like its the 1070. I'll wait a few months to see if prices come down at all. Based on online tests it actually seems to outperform the Titan X? Amazing.
