    Is this a BIOS problem?

Cleared the CMOS and updated BIOS to the latest firmware, but it made no difference. I did identify the problem, though. It turns out that the DH57JG has a history of being very buggy with Linux. I realized that what I had working previously on this machine was Squeeze with kernel 2.6, but I...

    Is this a BIOS problem?

A machine with an Intel DH57JG motherboard is showing some problems after sitting unused for two years. 1. It will not boot from an external USB drive. I have a bootable Linux image on a thumb drive. This machine used to be able to boot this way. I tested the drive with another machine and it...

    Long-lasting thermal paste?

The issue with drying out is counterintuitive to me. I would expect that the part that evaporates doesn't play much role in heat conduction. So a dried out seal should work just as well. Yet, some people report a temp increase with a dried seal. Wish someone could explain that.

    Long-lasting thermal paste?

For machines that may not be upgraded for 5+ years, need a thermal paste that won't degrade in thermal conductivity. Would prefer non-conductive and no curing needed. I'm considering these two, but haven't tried them yet: Arctic Cooling MX-2 Innovative Cooling Seven Carat Diamond Any...

    HDD Platter Capacity Database

Found this useful resource, though it's a bit old. It lists the number of platters and heads for various models. HDD Platter Capacity Database

Very Low Profile RAM for tight spaces

Most desktop DIMMs sold today are Low Profile, meaning they are 30mm wide. There is Very Low Profile RAM, which is 18.3mm, but that form is mostly limited to server RAM. I've found three manufacturers of VLP, unbuffered, non-ECC DIMMs: Samsung MV-3V4G4 ATP AQ12M6418BKH9S Kingston Value...

Tools to fix frequent load cycle problem

The WD Scorpio Black is notorious for clicking from frequent load/unloads on Linux. This is due to an energy saver feature in the firmware. It seems the Hitachi Travelstar also has this issue. Western Digital and Hitachi have DOS utilities to adjust the settings. You have to connect the HDD...

HDD Shopping: Making use of serial numbers?

I'm shopping for HDDs and I see many cases where the apparently identical drive is shown with different numbers in the name. Like so: Hitachi Travelstar 160 GB no. 1 Hitachi Travelstar 160 GB no. 2 Hitachi Travelstar 160 GB no. 3 I'm assuming they are batch numbers. Is there any useful...

Real world experience of SLC vs MLC reliability?

OK...Useful point. I suppose this would best be the start of another thread, but what if the question is changed to "Real world experience of enterprise vs consumer grade SSDs?" I haven't seen any reports of that sort either.

Real world experience of SLC vs MLC reliability?

If the main determining factor in durability is the firmware, why don't reviews spend more time covering that aspect? Are companies just not releasing that information? Does this mean that going for SLC is a waste of money, unless you specifically need the physical robustness of the...

Real world experience of SLC vs MLC reliability?

I have read a lot of threads here where people describe their SSDs failing. Also read here and elsewhere descriptions of why SLC should be more reliable (error rates, longevity). But I have not found any reports where somebody used a significant number of SLCs and MLCs and was able to give...

    Whitelist/blacklist for HDD models?

Surveys indicate that overall HDD failure rates for different makers are about the same, but there is great variance between models from a given maker. So, instead of asking which makes to get/avoid, we have to ask which models. Is there a whitelist/blacklist of HDD models? I didn't find any...

Robust ODD for reading aging media?

Recommendations for a CD/DVD reader with a long life and superior ability to read CD/DVD-Rs? I think it's due to aging of the laser that ODDs gradually lose their ability to read disks. First, they stop recognizing writeables and then eventually can't even read pressed media. My experience is...

    Looking for SFF workstation setup

Yes, I think the Antec ISK 100 would be better for this case. The ISK 300 looks really nice, but I don't need the internal optical and it has a noisy fan. I read one review that the ISK 100 has an ungrounded PSU, making it vulnerable to getting zapped by users. What would you do to protect it...

    Looking for SFF workstation setup

The Gigabyte GA-E350N-USB3 mobo seems to be the first one with the AMD E-350. It looks nice, but I don't know if I can wait for it. Seems strange that it has a fan, since it's supposed to run cool.
