Robust ODD for reading aging media?

Recommendations for a CD/DVD reader with a long life and superior ability to read CD/DVD-Rs?

I think it's due to aging of the laser that ODDs gradually lose their ability to read disks. First, they stop recognizing writeables and then eventually can't even read pressed media. My experience is that DVD readers die much faster than CD readers.

There is also the problem of CD/DVD-Rs degrading on the shelf. My DVD-Rs start showing problems in <2 years, but CD-Rs seem to last >10 years.

While we have shifted to HDD and flash for backup and transport, we still handle a lot of data on optical disk. I'm looking for ODDs in which the read head won't poop-out so quickly and if possible has superior error correction for reading degraded media.

The most recommended brand in the past seems to have been Pioneer, but they seem to be no longer available.
