Whitelist/blacklist for HDD models?

Surveys indicate that overall HDD failure rates for different makers are about the same, but there is great variance between models from a given maker. So, instead of asking which makes to get/avoid, we have to ask which models.

Is there a whitelist/blacklist of HDD models? I didn't find any such thing online.

If you were searching for HDDs of a particular configuration, how would you go about collecting information?
