So I was referred back here to ardforum for the first time in almost a decade by bobthetrucker over at /r/gloriousCRTmasterrace. To what degree can professional repair help aging CRTs? I've already had to bin two (FW9012 and p275) that simply stopped displaying totally after getting focus pops...

It's roughly 100-110 pounds by itself, this thing is absolutely a two man lift.

I think so. For high quality pictures see if you can get something like a repeating test pattern, like the Nokia test uses. Something that has fine details in the center and around the edges, maybe a sewing pattern or something.

Are they any better for people really sensitive to flatpanels? I imagine the LED's would be an improvement over a 60hz cold cathode or whatever is in normal backlights.

First off I don't mind if it's not something I can shave with, i mean after all I'm cool with carrying around huge crap and I wear fullsized headphones in public (yeah, that much of a nerd). The real thing is i'm one of those sad bastards that's apparently allergic to flatpanels. Now i've...

Well my fw900 is essentially toast now, i plugged in the p260 after moving apartments just because it's so easier to lift onto the desk and realised just how obscenely out of focus the fw900 is. The only thing is I STILL need a windas cable because i've got the brightness at 0 on this screen...

Well Sony's quoted price for repairs is $300 roughly for any fw900 out of warranty.

If you want a TV there are some surprisingly good flatpanels out there which are more than good enough for television/movie use. For computer/gaming use ofc you still cant beat CRTs. If you think you can handle a 100lb (heavier towards the glass) monitor the size of your average 20-24inch CRT...

Yeah, Maybe a CRT-wiki would be a good idea. It would also be a good collected place for people to deal in second-hand monitors.

Considering that it's an electrical problem to begin with I'd say unless you're an electrician that's trained in CRT repair it's a new form of suicide to try to fix it yourself.

Sprak if he has FOCUS problems then windas won't do shit, and yeah if only one side of the screen is out of focus that's actually worse than two sides. As near as I can tell the focus pots adjust the whole screen in some sort of symmetrical pattern, so if you've gut focus problems unevenly...

Look carefully. are you having focus issues or convergence issues? If you're getting convergence problems Windas will be able to fix it, if the monitor's actually out of focus you need to dick with the focus pots and you're probably going to need to settle for getting the center "good enough"...

If you can try to run the nokia monitor test on them, get the one with the best focus when running at 1920x1200 @85hz with the contrast and brightness at 100.

I'd say you have some serious internal problems then. Repair for FW900's that are out of warranty (read: all of them) is in the vicinity of $300 as quoted by sony, I'd demand a full refund or replacement with a working one.
