I think so. For high quality pictures see if you can get something like a repeating test pattern, like the Nokia test uses. Something that has fine details in the center and around the edges, maybe a sewing pattern or something.

Are they any better for people really sensitive to flatpanels? I imagine the LED's would be an improvement over a 60hz cold cathode or whatever is in normal backlights.

Well Sony's quoted price for repairs is $300 roughly for any fw900 out of warranty.

those racks are really cheap, you can get those even at kmart or target I think.

If you want a TV there are some surprisingly good flatpanels out there which are more than good enough for television/movie use. For computer/gaming use ofc you still cant beat CRTs. If you think you can handle a 100lb (heavier towards the glass) monitor the size of your average 20-24inch CRT...

Considering that it's an electrical problem to begin with I'd say unless you're an electrician that's trained in CRT repair it's a new form of suicide to try to fix it yourself.

Look carefully. are you having focus issues or convergence issues? If you're getting convergence problems Windas will be able to fix it, if the monitor's actually out of focus you need to dick with the focus pots and you're probably going to need to settle for getting the center "good enough"...

If you can try to run the nokia monitor test on them, get the one with the best focus when running at 1920x1200 @85hz with the contrast and brightness at 100.

I'd say you have some serious internal problems then. Repair for FW900's that are out of warranty (read: all of them) is in the vicinity of $300 as quoted by sony, I'd demand a full refund or replacement with a working one.

AD700 from newegg is good. I'm going to try and find somewhere local I can listen to them and the 555's before buying.

So basically a larger soundstage means that I'll hear sounds as they relate to the game's environment instead of just feeling like I'm being fucked in the ear by some desktop speakers I taped to my head.

What exactly does soundstage mean. I heard elsewhere that a smaller one means that you'll be able to hear distant sounds easier, but I've also heard the conflicting definition that a larger soundstage means you can hear things from farther away.

If you're talking about 1920x1440 that would be because it IS a 4:3 resolution, if you mean some higher than 1920x1200 widescreen resolution then you just need to adjust the geometry and it will remember it for that resolution/refresh combo. Most resolutions will also look off unless you run at...

Doesn't really matter, the only difference between the HP and Sony models is the color of the paint.

I've a p260 that does the same thing in reverse, if you turn it on it's so blurry as to be nearly unrecognizable but after ~3-15mins of being on it makes a loud snap and is in focus.

Pretty much every modern CRT will just refuse to run at a refresh/resolution combo that will hurt it, it'll just display an "out of range" error on the OSD and eventually snap back.
