    ZFS with no RAID vdevs?

So, if every vdev was RAID 1 (not RAID Z), are the checksums compared on every read?

    ZFS with no RAID vdevs?

So why does loss of one vdev means loss of the whole pool, but there is no parity to recover it using ZFS?

    ZFS with no RAID vdevs?

Wouldn't checksums, copy-on-write, and snapshots provide me with some level of protection?

    ZFS with no RAID vdevs?

I've yet to try ZFS, so I don't know if this makes sense. Consider the following sequence of actions: 1. An operating system supporting ZFS is installed on a boot volume 2. A new ZFS filesystem (pool?) is created 3. A 1TB disk is added to the pool as a vdev of type "disk" (not RAIDZ) 4. A 500GB...

What OS and/or filesystem to use for expandable storage?

Hi [H]ard Storage, I've always admired the monster storage rigs you guys have, and I figure it's time to finally build my own. I have about 5 1TB drives, 1 2TB, 3 500GB, 2 320GB, and a few other drives lying around each with one ext3 or ext4 volume filled to the brim. As a no-frills backup...

I think I just completely killed my onboard sound?!

Lets say you have a case where the front panel audio connector is split up into individual pins. Lets say you connect those pins incorrectly. Could this completely kill audio on the board?

    Overclocking 6950 in secondary slot.

I have a reference Sapphire 6950 in a secondary PCIe slot, and a non-reference Sapphire 6950 in my primary slot. I'd like to overclock the reference card, without overclocking the non-reference card in the primary slot. Sapphire TriXX allows me to overclock either the primary card, or take both...

    6950 with an Athlon 64 3500+

My CPU went to market on April 4, 2005. I bought it on August 5, 2005. So I consider my PC less than 6 years old. I still find my computing experience is much better than most students at my University with new machines because I keep my machine clean with less than 100MB start-up memory usage.

    6950 with an Athlon 64 3500+

I'll run some benchmarks and check the increase in power consumption and then see if it's worth keeping it just for 1440x900. If it's a terrible power/performance situation then I should be able to afford a complete system upgrade while keeping the 6950. This system is at most 6 years old by...

    6950 with an Athlon 64 3500+

Yep, the board has two PCI-e slots. This is the socket 939 90nm part. You probably have a socket 754 3200+?

    6950 with an Athlon 64 3500+

Did I catch your attention? To make a long story short, in September I will have in my possession a 6950 that I'd like to drop into my (now ancient) build. Main specs: Athlon 64 3500+ Venice @ stock 2.2Ghz 2GB DDR 400 (4 x 512MB) Corsair 850TX Asus nForce 4 Ultra eVGa 9800GT (I'll see if I can...

is it possible to unlock cores/cache on Linux?

As far as the kernel goes, it's the kernel's job to detect hardware on boot, so you wont need to change anything.

    Socket 939 Upgrade?

The AMD X4 640 is more than three times more powerful than the 3800 X2, it's also $99. (The X4 640 is faster for a server than the Intel i5 that costs $80 more) If you have the cash consider building a new server.

    Benchmarking Modern Warfare 2.

I'd like to benchmark Modern Warefare 2, so that I can tweak my settings for a constant 60FPS with my crappy hardware. A ton of review sites have used Modern Warfare 2 as a benchmark, but it doesn't seem to include any demo recording tool. Surely these sites were not playing the game each...
