After writing this post, I checked an old XP box I had laying around and Verizon's DNS worked just fine. I double checked my Win7 box and Verizon DNS failed me again. Went back to Level 3 DNS and everything is working just fine.
Here is something odd, that I'm fairly sure is a DNS issue and can't explain. Of course, neither can Windstream, formally Verizon and who for me is Verizon in everything but name. My test case was trying to resolve www.google.com, but no other domain would resolve (at least Hardocp, Slashdot...
Venting some frustrations, that I think a lot of people here can relate to. Over the weekend, I reformatted an old box, ran updates, installed Antivirus and Spybot and setup weekly automated tasks for backup and virus checking. That's my bare bones setup, which has worked great for our house...
To play Devil's Advocate, a lot of times this isn't such a bad deal considering that Universities are often extremely able to leverage their industry and alumni contacts to actually convert an invention into a going concern.
I've also never heard of a claim of ownership for a student's work...
That's nothing compared to this old broad who called the Law on a neighbor for stealing her WiFi and slowing it down, which was actually another neighbors WiFi she herself was poaching, that he kindly setup for guests... and his poor neighbors.. to use free of charge.
To top things off, the...
RE: Buying from Newegg
Bit OT (been following the thread though), but I thought I'd chime in about a similar experience. Several years ago, Around '06 during my Hi-Fi mid life crises, I ordered an audio card that was rumored to play 44.1kHz DTS-CDs just fine in Windows Media Center.

So, I was talking with some family down in central Ohio and learned that their, and my old, ISP have been awarded a broadband stimulus for fiber optic. Nobody really knows what this means, as even though this is an Electric Co-Op it's sure operates like a private business. (meaning you don't...
Fascinating StoneCat. It makes a lot of sense. One thing I've always noticed, my upload is very consistent while my download is dependent on the time of day. The Verizon tech who pulled my temp line -apparently 45 year old copper just doesn't cut it- said marketing was the biggest factor in...
Question for all you IT gurus. Can you explain to me why residential uploads are relatively slow? I ask because after talking with our IT guy, he said our internet connections are completely symmetrical... which got me thinking, If the backbone and large ISP pipes are symmetrical, why do I...
I hate you....
seriously though, my rural broadband just upped our cap to 7Mbit after installing a new backbone. So this articles makes sense from my POV.
Got it. I was able access files with PPTP as you said, by using the local IP address in-lieu of the computer name. One thing I had to change was the router's IP address. I also managed to get the QuickVPN client to work in compatibility mode (first time that's ever really worked for me)...
Hey gang,
I've DSL has just become available in my area, so I added a line to my house as a backup for my cable internet. To go with that new connection, I've purchased a Cisco RV042 router for it's dual WANs. This little guy seems to be very speedy, and also has a built in support for up...
