After writing this post, I checked an old XP box I had laying around and Verizon's DNS worked just fine. I double checked my Win7 box and Verizon DNS failed me again. Went back to Level 3 DNS and everything is working just fine.
Here is something odd, that I'm fairly sure is a DNS issue and can't explain. Of course, neither can Windstream, formally Verizon and who for me is Verizon in everything but name. My test case was trying to resolve www.google.com, but no other domain would resolve (at least Hardocp, Slashdot...
Venting some frustrations, that I think a lot of people here can relate to. Over the weekend, I reformatted an old box, ran updates, installed Antivirus and Spybot and setup weekly automated tasks for backup and virus checking. That's my bare bones setup, which has worked great for our house...
To play Devil's Advocate, a lot of times this isn't such a bad deal considering that Universities are often extremely able to leverage their industry and alumni contacts to actually convert an invention into a going concern.
I've also never heard of a claim of ownership for a student's work...
That's nothing compared to this old broad who called the Law on a neighbor for stealing her WiFi and slowing it down, which was actually another neighbors WiFi she herself was poaching, that he kindly setup for guests... and his poor neighbors.. to use free of charge.
To top things off, the...
RE: Buying from Newegg
Bit OT (been following the thread though), but I thought I'd chime in about a similar experience. Several years ago, Around '06 during my Hi-Fi mid life crises, I ordered an audio card that was rumored to play 44.1kHz DTS-CDs just fine in Windows Media Center.
Long...
So, I was talking with some family down in central Ohio and learned that their, and my old, ISP have been awarded a broadband stimulus for fiber optic. Nobody really knows what this means, as even though this is an Electric Co-Op it's sure operates like a private business. (meaning you don't...
Fascinating StoneCat. It makes a lot of sense. One thing I've always noticed, my upload is very consistent while my download is dependent on the time of day. The Verizon tech who pulled my temp line -apparently 45 year old copper just doesn't cut it- said marketing was the biggest factor in...
Question for all you IT gurus. Can you explain to me why residential uploads are relatively slow? I ask because after talking with our IT guy, he said our internet connections are completely symmetrical... which got me thinking, If the backbone and large ISP pipes are symmetrical, why do I...
I hate you....
seriously though, my rural broadband just upped our cap to 7Mbit after installing a new backbone. So this articles makes sense from my POV.
Got it. I was able access files with PPTP as you said, by using the local IP address in-lieu of the computer name. One thing I had to change was the router's IP address. I also managed to get the QuickVPN client to work in compatibility mode (first time that's ever really worked for me)...
Hey gang,
I've DSL has just become available in my area, so I added a line to my house as a backup for my cable internet. To go with that new connection, I've purchased a Cisco RV042 router for it's dual WANs. This little guy seems to be very speedy, and also has a built in support for up...
Another steam lover. Love the easy backups, lack of CD-Keys, and built in community functions.
I just wish the DD vs Hard Copy savings were passed on to us, or at least to the developers in higher profits, but everything I've states the contrary.
I know the feeling. I have to go stand outside under the utility pole at my brother's place. Not fun at all.
From my understanding at town hall meetings, that's basically the point, except it's not for cellular service. I know I'd be pissed if big brother said, sorry pal, we're only going...
I'm fairly sure the FCC doesn't care about home transmitters as long as they are less than some maximum power threshold?
But the real trick will be getting your phone to recognize and connect to your personal tower instead of your network tower, I think, as they program the phones to...
http://www.broadbandusa.gov/ has interesting details. Do a search, and see for yourself that many of these grant requests are for middle-mile fiber.
And, for what it's worth, my brother's place in a very rural area was just notified it will eventually have access to 8/1.5mb broadband thanks...
Loved the section on multitasking, where the authors talks about younger generations increasing ability to multitask. Remember the old saying "Computer's multitask, People just task." Or something like that...
Agreed. I'm tired of hearing how all those people in Europe have 10mbit connections. To put things into perspective, some of the larger stakes where I grew up are about as big in area as a large city.
95% of the people out in the boonies are the laborers, farm hands, service-sector, truck...
I would like to put a gigantic solar shield at the L1 Lagrange point. But instead of reducing solar radiation, I'll threaten the world with a complete blackout unless they pay me... "ONE MILLION DOLLARS!"
I have been tasked with installing a new, used, motherboard on a family-friend's Frankenstein computer. This is an old Socket 939 system.
Everything is legit, I'm staring at the OEM XP cd they got off Newegg. Now, their old motherboard was a DFI Lanparty something something, and they...
Figured as much. I should have posted in the AMD forum for clarity, but was tired and stupid. I'm leaving them unplugged, just for cable management, since the 500watt PSU should be able to handle everything just fine.
Older socket 939 MB, DFI Lanparty with the Nvidia NF4 chipset... for...
So I'm helping a friend repair a somewhat older socket 939 PC by replacing the burned out motherboard with a new one she ordered on eBay.
Everything works great, but, there are 2 extra power connectors on the motherboard (5pin floppy and 5pin Molex), and I have no clue what they do. The...
I've got a similar rig (O/C to 3.4Ghz, 12GB vs 3GB RAM, AMD 4870 vs GTX 285, and only a single 1.5TB HDD) and have never seen it pull more than ~250 Watts from the Wall while playing Crysis at 1900x1200 'Gamer' settings.
For what it's worth,
Now I'm getting a better picture. Either you're a lifer, or plan on being one. It is entirely all to common for people just like you have earned their education piecemeal over time.
One thing you'll have to consider though, is that most places will be looking to hire young guys for their...
Usually it's because those drivers are loaded with software 'features' or prebundled with required things you may already have such as Java or .NET.
Most manufacturers have a lite driver download option. In my case, my Brother printer driver is a light 19MB compared to the 400MB for the full...
Well, I use VMware Sever 2.0 (I think that's the free platfrom) on a Linux box to run other Linux Distros and, recently, to fool around with Windows Server. This is a production server, so I'm happy with it and it definitely works A-OK.
So I'd say it's quite useful, and I'm fairly sure it...
I'll be honest, you may have problems from an online degree... BUTTTTTTT
Should you so choose, remember this adage, "College credit is good the World around." Ok, so I made that up. But my point is, you can easily take many of your classes at Devry, and decide to finish up at some other...
Since you've got the AA, yea man, you are good to go. Seriously, the best students I see, 9/10 went to community school or have a their associates. I love guys like that, because I know they are here to work and learn. (Not that having fun should be avoided)
As far as what you can do with...
I was given the PayPal dongle thingy for free when my account got hacked. Maybe they'll do the same? Funny think was I used a fairly secure password unique to my PayPal account, go figure. Anyway, the dongle is sweet, haven't had problems since.
P.S. In my case it was some A-hole who...
Well, it sure sounds like you've got a solid plan. If I were you, I'd enroll in Comp. Engineering Department ASAP and take Algebra II this January.
Here's my logic:
A) You know I think that dawg gone Algebra is so very important, you might as well take the class, and your time, and get full...
The MIT math classes online are great. I'm currently working through their linear algebra as a refresher. Unfortunately, I don't think they have the Algebra I and II courses online. Maybe they have programming there. Keep in mind it's a no credit no cost thing.
Since you are Active Duty and...
When you say "I would like to continue onto higher education in a similar degree to what I'm doing now, but more focused on computers," I take that to mean "I want to build and design the things I'm currently fixing, troubleshooting, and installing."
You'll get a lot of advice, and I'm not a...
Depending on your language, you can use a predefined library or just walk-through each element with loops. I'm sure there's a faster way, but I'm not great programmer whiz
I'm gonna take a leap and guess you're talking php. In which case array_diff() is your friend.
Unless that is the full version. A web server can and will, usually, give you a BroKed display without proper headers and the like.
http://validator.w3.org/ is your friend for that.
