I'm considering the Dell - that server looks good. Is there any bloatware installed, and would there be anything unusual since it is a server? Any idea why it is so cheap?
Oh, ok - the speed on the mobo doesn't have to match the RAM speed. Yeah, it's an old mobo - it even has an agp and pci-e slot because pci-e was very new at the time. One more question - Do I have to manually underclock the RAM?
Would this A-DATA 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 work with my Gigabyte GA-8I915P Duo-A mobo? I'm confused by the RAM speeds on the mobo and the A-Data.
I'm building my father a new pc for his office. He's an accountant, so the heaviest load on the computer will come from Quickbooks and Excel (no games, no movies). I thought it would be easiest to buy a barebone case and mobo, and then to add on the rest. I'm looking to spend less than $300...
Thanks for the responses.
I have an Nvidia GeForce PCX 5900 and a 3.0 Ghz Intel P4 530, so I am looking for a PCI express card. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-8I915P which has a PCI express slot and an optional AGP slot, but I don't think it would be advantageous to use AGP. I noticed this...
I'm looking for a video card priced around $100. The card I have now is a GeForce FX 5900, so anything priced around $100 would be a step up, right? Two cards I have in mind are the GeForce 8600GT (which is unfortunately out of stock) and the Radeon HD 2600XT. I am open to suggestions...
Yeah, I know its not worth $1000.00; I wouldn't dream of buying this pc if it didn't come with a 40 % DISCOUNT!
Anyway, the deals over and he didn't buy - he was too busy during tax season. (Sucks for me too - I was gonna get the monitor) Thanks for the input anyways.

Yeah, he wants a good deal, and he likes Dell. Plus, shipping is included.
That celeron sounds nice too, but he probably wants something a little more powerful.
BTW, thanks for the input.
Hello, I need to buy a new PC for my father, who is an accountant. He seems to 'trust' Dell, if only because they advertise the most in our area. Anyways, I noticed the 40% off deals going on right now for desktop pcs and wanted to know if I picked a good deal. Here are the specs:
Dell...
I had a problem like this too - the solution was really obvious: my power button (the one on the case) wasn't plugged in on the mobo. Make sure that you connect all the front panel leds to their appropriate spots on the motherboard.
I don't think that Windows is even detecting my onboard sound hardware; it always prompts me to install a raid device, which I'm too lazy to do, but it hasn't prompted me to install anything for my onboard sound....

Just some more info - when I open device manager, I get an error...
