I think I'm going to wait it out until prices drop on the video cards. Turns out my coworker has a used gigabyte 750 ti that he will sell me for 50 bucks. I just can't make myself bite the bullet on something that a year ago was a hundred bucks cheaper.
Started picking up parts for a new computer. Noticed since I made the part list the video card I had picked jumped in price quite a bit.
I was initially looking at an MSI 1060 GTX Armor 6GB OCV1. Initially priced at $345 now it is at $420. Looking at alternatives I saw I could get the MSI 1060...
Been a while since I built anything. I was looking to build back in July, but was waiting for prices to come back down. Now it seems like that isn't going to happen and I can't really wait.
Cribbed off a build but looking for advice and recommendations: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4wkqzM

Is that just because of the cryptocurrency mining thing? Does that affect all parts or really just the video card. I do have a GTX 750TI I could use in the meantime.
Been a while since I've built. Looking to replace a computer I built in 07.

Alright. Down to this. I'm going to try a clean windows install, see if the problem lies there. If not I will see if I can borrow a PSU from a friend. If neither of those work, I may be looking at a new system. Might be extreme, but I built this in 2006, so not exactly easy to find compatible...
Alright. Took Araxie's steps, still no dice. As to DrLobotomy, don't really have a spare PSU sitting around, but would it make sense for just the PCI power to go on the fritz?
Wondering if anyone has any ideas on this. I've done a lot of searching and tried a lot of methods. I keep getting a code 43.
I've uninstalled drivers using Windows, using DDU. I've turned off Windows updating for the card, I've installed directly from NVIDIA website instead of using...
Good point on both the blu ray and the video card. He may not need to burn blu ray, but he will want to burn dvd at the very least and have the ability to read blu ray
He does have one internal hard drive that I will transfer. I set up his files to go onto 500gb hitachi GST deskstar that...
My dad seems really interested in upgrading his computer. He has 10 year old dell that isn't going to make the cut for Windows 10. Curious if it is even worth trying to build something or if I should be shopping dell's for him to get.

Again, thanks for the advice. It was helpful. I have one more question. I am look at combo cd / dvd burners, but I have hard time finding any good reviews. Is there a particular brand or model that is particularly good for the price (right now I'm looking at a Samsung and a Sony).
Thanks for the hasty replies!
To answer some questions:
The 250GB drive will be for programs as well as storage of work files (lots of data from a variety of programs and machines). Basically I want my work separate from play.
This is going to be an all purpose machine, mostly work, but...
