Playstation single player games will no longer be ported to PC

I won't conclude that it isn't a major concern; we just have no firm evidence to show that it is, and saying "proven beyond reasonable doubt" doesn't make it so. I and now Ididar have already pointed out both contradictory evidence and other potential factors. No, I haven't conducted a survey, but I do know that gameplay, reviews, affordability, and sheer sequel fatigue are possibilities given historical patterns.

The problem is that Newtonian physics have still been rigorously tested and are solid, repeatable models. You can't say "games always fail when they push ideology" because that's not only subjective criteria (which ideology? Where's the breaking point?) but demonstrably false in at least some cases. If we're going to abuse the physics analogy, it'd be as if inertia only applied some of the time.

I appreciate that cultural differences meant you had limited exposure to Nintendo, but that doesn't change that Wind Waker was a massively popular game whose art style played a role in its success. I've never watched Titanic, but that doesn't mean it's irrelevant.

The point is that distinctive art often sells games rather than taking away from them. Nintendo's business is arguably built on it.

Destiny 2 lasted for nine years and was second only to Call of Duty when it launched in 2017. I'll agree it was less polarizing, but I wouldn't call Marathon botched.

Woke ideology prioritizes equity over quality. The more woke a game is, the more sacrifices they make to gameplay, story, etc. A lot of the consequences of woke behavior are hidden behind second order effects. But woke ideology inevitably makes games worse.

So your theory is now that all games that fail are a result of woke ideology regardless of whether or not you can prove it? That's a religion right there.

Baldur's Gate 3 pushed for woke ideology and did extremely well, but it's a risky move. Every character in that game is essentially bisexual, with a lesbian couple that you have to save. Just like how sex can help sell an otherwise shitty game, you can expect "ideologies" to make a weak game even weaker. Here's another example from Persona 5, a game I didn't like playing but is well received by the community. At some point in the game you take a test and one of the questions is about who makes the money in Japan. The answer is not the government because the government is stupid at managing money. Clearly game developers had an ideology that they wanted to push in a game. Whether or not it's a popular opinion is another matter. Point is do enough of these in a video game and anger enough people while your game is essentially mediocre at best, then don't expect great sales. Even if the game was top notch, doesn't give developers excuses to put these into games. People in 2026 are very sensitive to bullshit, and can easily see it.

I imagine he's saying it's a significant factor.

I don't like when people have to insert their woke ideology into games. It really pulls you out of the context.

But at the same time the labeling of 'woke' getting out of hand a little bit. I play through forespoken and it's really not woke. Sure. You have a black female orphan from New York who does self-centered things like an orphan would, finding herself in a fantasy world. But that's about it. The start was slow and cringy and the interactions were too. But that game was a lot of fun and a lot of quality creativity went into that game.

Having a female lead in a game is not woke ideology. Having that character not 100% white doesn't mean it's woke either. A character with an urban background in a fantasy setting is not something I would have chosen, but okay, is what it is. No Marxist ideology. No one is pushing LGBT values. There is even an in-game lore item about how business with low regulations yet strict punishments has been good for economic prosperity in the region.

The game is good for cat lovers which I don't like cats. But they give you this awesome setting so you don't have cats following you around which is nice.

There is just a lot of good parts in that game if you stick with it. The 'woke' label or hurt it unnecessarily.

Baldur's Gate 3 was successful in spite of the "woke" label. The developers are primarily from Belgium where they care less sexual expressions. To them sex is what it is.

I guarantee you that if this were developed primarily from the California United States, you would smell a lot stronger agenda/propaganda on sexual expressions. In other words, it would definitely seem like it was a lot more woke. These people from Belgium just don't seem like they are pushing as much philosophy, they are just diving in on what they consider fun.

You do know Sony made Stellar Blade? Feminists were very upset that a sexy female character was the main character of a video game. When ported to PC, it became the best selling Sony PC game. It beat out Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, and even Spider-Man. Stellar Blade sold over 1 million copies in its first three days on Steam. I don't see any damaged sales here.
The issue isn't whether or not the lead is an attractive woman, or even if she's meant to pander to horny, lonely men. I was discussing more the possibility that developers might backtrack to please the whiners. Imagine the public backlash if Santa Monica Studio caved and made Laufey a sex symbol... yeah, some of those complainers might change their mind, but that would be overshadowed by the roasting Sony would get for not sticking to its guns.

If I was on the jury for the trial of ideology, I'd have zero doubt that it's guilty.

What did lididar point out? Where is the contradictory evidence? Other factors existing is not contradictory evidence, one does not exclude the other.

gameplay is a perfectly good reason for a game to fail, but if we take games with similar gameplay and the ones with the ideology always underperform, while the ones without do not then you cannot blame gameplay.

Affordability can be easily excluded, approx 3 million ppl pre-ordered GTA VI in the first week of pre-orders, despite pre-ordering being less popular nowadays without physical media. Clearly people can afford games. They just choose to not spend money on certified trash.

Sequel fatigue is really just bad game fatigue, COD and BF can seemingly go on making sequels forever and not loose popularity. Or when they did there were clear reasons for it.

Which ideology? Glad you've asked. All of them! It is completely irrelevant that games happen to push LGBTQ, Feminism, or DEI mostly nowadays. If they tried to push Krishna or Christianity or anti abortion rhetoric I'd be against that too.
There is no breaking point, it's a scale, games can get away unscathed with a bit of subtle ideology, like Horizon Zero Dawn. But the more overt and obvious it becomes the more it will affect public discourse and potentially sales.
You say it's demonstrably false, but I can't think of a single game that was overtly ideological but didn't underperform or fail.
I appreciate that cultural differences meant you had limited exposure to Nintendo, but that doesn't change that Wind Waker was a massively popular game whose art style played a role in its success. I've never watched Titanic, but that doesn't mean it's irrelevant.
From wikipedia:

"The Wind Waker received critical acclaim for its visuals, gameplay, level design, music, and story. The art direction proved divisive among players and contributed to comparatively weak sales"

You can say the exact same thing for marathon, praised by reviews, divisive with gamers.
The point is that distinctive art often sells games rather than taking away from them. Nintendo's business is arguably built on it.
Apparently not. Nintendo can get away with murder and still have a huge fanbase. They play outside of normal games industry rules for some reason.

Sticking to a vision and making money don't always go hand in hand. Also, who's vision? AAA games today have hundreds of people working on it, so who's vision we're talking about? This is the problem with gaming today in that there's too many cooks in the kitchen. Same goes for movies if you know about the controversy over The Odyssey. You know it's an issue when the Greeks have a problem with it. The Odyssey did make money despite the controversy, but that doesn't mean the movie did everything right.

As for backtracking, even the Sonic the Hedgehog movie has people saying that they should stick with their vision. Jim Carrey said that movie creators should not be influenced by people who were upset over the original Sonic design. Can you imagine ignoring a "vocal minority" so that someone's "vision" can be fulfilled? There would be no Sonic 3 movie which made $491 million worldwide. The Sonic franchise would be more dead than it is now.

Every single movie or video game is going to have someone who doesn't like it. The internet is just giving them all bigger and more visible platforms that allow them to reach other like-minded people and amplify their voices. I probably won't see The Odyssey but most of the complaints I've heard centre around two actors, not the story itself. People don't like two actors and all I've heard is whining about them, not the story or visuals. And, to be frank, the same people bitching about a black Helen of Troy wouldn't have uttered a word 40-50 years ago when white people were playing Egyptian pharohs (early dynasty, not the Macedonian pharohs) or when John Wayne played Ghengis Khan. And, no, this is not unique to white folks before anyone jumps on me for that. Yes, some African and Asian descent people get annoyed when the characters they identify with get swapped as well. You'll always find someone who's annoyed and nowadays you'll likely hear about it because the internet lets you search for information across the globe in seconds so it is brutally simple to find someone who's annoyed about the same thing you are, or to find someone complaining about a counter-point you're trying to make.

Information flow is great but it does tend to amplify voices far beyond what they should. Subtract the internet from the equation and most people would have heard Matt Damon and The Odyssey and based their desire to see the movie purely on that and maybe a trailer. That's the way it used to be. Now people who regularly get annoyed about "woke" stuff go on the internet instead to their favourite forums and look to see if there is something about a movie or game they "should" be annoyed about before they choose to purchase.

This is categorically false. Nolan completely shit on the story. If he had honored the story instead of taking so many creative liberties, people would have given an infinite shit less about the casting. The casting is the least of this movie's problems. Also, stop derailing this thread.

I mean no one in the history of Hollywood except for maybe Henry Cavill actually care about staying true to the source.

Also, it's good that we don't have people like John Wayne getting to be Genghis Khan anymore. Let's just try to aim for realism and stop pushing agendas onscreen. Won't stop me from going to see this movie though.

Bro, You're arguing with people that were mad that Dark Souls has 'Body Type A' and 'Body Type B' for options.

And the armor and clothing! This was the bronze age FFS, people wore bright colors and the armor and weapons of the era were literally golden! Bronze is incredibly beautiful alloy. What Nolan does? Dresses everyone in black and brown biker leathers like it is the early 2000s and recycles the oh-so-obviously plastic Batman armor leftovers.

Bro, You're arguing with people that were mad that Dark Souls has 'Body Type A' and 'Body Type B' for options.
Because male and female are now offensive for like five people, where Body Type A & B are offensive for majority of players. There was a Mod that renamed body types 1 and 2 to male and female was removed. This is called conditioning, like how Sony paid bots to convince people that removal of physical media was good. Just like when people tell themselves that not having Playstation games on PC is good. Majority of people are not in agreement of this assessment.

Who cares what offends the professional victims and snowflakes on a Twitter poll (which is not a "majority of players" as you say)? Body Type A and B is a choice that affects 2 seconds of the character builder. It's like being mad about a 'fat' body type being called 'thick' in the character builder. It doesn't matter unless you're the type of person that wants to be offended.

Yeah, conditioning is what gets people mad. A game that has less "progressive content" but forces the agenda is more woke than a game that has more "progressive content" but isn't trying.

It's game developers using their position to piss off the majority of their audience and thinking they can get away with it. Which is a path Sony has gone down and has clearly failed, multiple times. Restricting their games to Playstation may end up like Microsoft's games where they thought too highly of them and eventually figured that their audience didn't share the same sentiments. At this point, Microsoft releasing their games on PC did not make up for their poor games.

God of War Laufey is not a God of War game, despite it's name. This game would have been better off as a DLC or something that happens on the side in a God of War game. I want to see another God of War where Odin goes to ancient Greece to bring back Greek gods from the dead and align them with Norse Mythology gods to get revenge on Kratos and his allies. Not play his dead wife who wasn't interesting enough to barely be shown in the past two games, and it's only going to be Playstation? I hope Sony's modern audiences are going to Ok with buying this game that would have been released 2 years later on Steam.

Sure if you swallow their bullshit hook line and sinker. They manufacture the 80% number by including all in-game purchases, DLCs, subscriptions, digital only games etc. It's not a comparison for digital vs physical game sales of actual games. One could say it's a completely irrelevant number they are using to justify ending ownership. I'd guess the real number to be the exact opposite on consoles for games that actually had physical releases. As in physical copies winning by at least 66 to 33%. Especially worldwide since the PS store has no regional pricing, so it ends up being sometimes 100-200% more expensive than physical media in poorer regions.

The hilarious thing to me is all Sony had to do to NOT piss people off was just shut the fuck up and wait. The PS5 Pro doesn't have a disc drive. You can buy one, but I'm sure few people do. Then, when the PS6 comes out, just don't do physical games. Don't even make a thing out of it, just release a console with no drive, and don't release one for it, unless you see big demand. You just let it die the silent death it is already dying. When the PS6 comes out and people ask you say what is almost certainly true at that point "Very few stores carry physical games so we did not prioritize it on this console."

Instead they went and made a whole thing out of it and now are looking the the moronic paste-eaters they are. Completely unforced error.

I mean, that's basically what happened with the PC market. Nobody discontinued physical games on some date, hell there probably still are some. Companies just slowly stopped making them as consumers moved away from them, and systems slowly stopped having optical drives, or even a place to put in an optical drive.

Just go the same way with PS5/6 discs. Let them die off of their own accord. You get what you want and aren't the bad guy. Instead everyone is dunking on them for this shit.

Bluesky = Opinion dismissed.

But he is right about one thing, there is no comparison point. I'm surprised even 7 games got 100k considering how few worthwhile games were released in 2026 so far.

The thing that you need to compare is how many copies the same popular non-live service, single player game sells digitally vs. physically. But of course they won't show that data because it wouldn't support their bullshit narrative.

This is why PC is so great because nobody said you can't have physical games. The last known game to be on DVD was Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020), which shipped with 10 DVD's. Goes to show that PC's with Blu-Ray are rare. Even finding a PC with a disc drive is impossible today. Nobody said it has to be on a laser disc as USB thumb drives are an attractive option.

Because the PC market is the wild west, you don't have the same problems going digital as you do on consoles. Steam isn't the only store and you can even legally backup your games like with GoG. Not only that but old games can still be bought and played on PC where if the game was on PS3 then good luck playing it on PS5. Nobody is making you pay a monthly fee to play games online, besides MMO's like World of Warcraft.
Just go the same way with PS5/6 discs. Let them die off of their own accord. You get what you want and aren't the bad guy. Instead everyone is dunking on them for this shit.
Sony knows that people aren't going to dump their PS5, just after they dumped Xbox to switch to PS5. For the rest of this console generation, you won't see PS5 owners jump ship. PS6 is a reset which means consumers can then decide if they want to stick with console or make the switch to PC. Whatever games you own on PS5 have better be physical because once someone switches to PC then chances are those PS4/PS5 games will go with the Playstation account. It'll be weird legally to backup a digital copy of a game since it requires the console to be modded.

As a reminder, emulation for PS5 is progressing. SharpEMU is able to get to the loading screen in GTAV. Also, they're porting GTAV to Switch using leaked source code.

so no matter how many statistics or charts or sales numbers are shown you will dismiss it because of your 'feelings'...no facts to back up your opinions...they are just your 'feelings'...the fact is that physical sales are nowhere near digital and Sony made their decision based off this...do you really in your right mind believe that physical sales are thriving and Sony just cut them off for the fun of it?...seriously?...you don't think Sony management looked at the numbers before coming to their decision?

and you're also dismissing any numbers because the person posted on BlueSky vs Twitter?...seriously?...like that matters at all...they probably posted the exact same thing on Twitter, I just happened to see the BlueSky post

Depends on which numbers you're looking at. The big picture shows that 70% of games were bought digitally, but Sony made games were bought majority on Disc. Astro Bot sold 60% on physical disc, which suggests that physical is the preferred method to buying games. Physical games make up 60% of 1st party game sales. Uncharted 4 sold 80% on disc.

do you really in your right mind believe that physical sales are thriving and Sony just cut them off for the fun of it?...seriously?...you don't think Sony management looked at the numbers before coming to their decision?
Sony did it to make more money, especially with GTA6 around the corner. Sony was probably going to wait until PS6 to do this, but they looked at the GTA6 numbers and realized now is the perfect time. Sony also wants gamers on Playstation Plus since most are on basic. Only 22% of customers are subscribed to the highest-tier PlayStation Plus Premium, while the rest are on Essential. Only 63% of USA gamers buy two or fewer new video games per year, which means Sony isn't making as much money as they'd like. Getting people on higher tiers of Playstation Plus would make them more money.

Also, like I said before it's conditioning. They want gamers to get used to not owning games. UbiSoft isn't alone thinking that gamers need to get comfortable with "Not Owning Your Games". Sony isn't stupid enough to say the quiet part out loud.

The big picture shows that 70% of games were bought digitally...

that's the only number that matters...sure you can cherry pick certain games and say that more physical copies were sold but the number that matters is the overall one...and the trend is that digital is gaining even more ground...PS consoles were pushing physical discs for most of their life cycle which is why the numbers look a bit skewed...but if Sony had decided to make a digital only PS5 then the numbers would have turned around much sooner

with PC digital has been the way for years...consoles were the opposite

why do PC gamers not care as much about owning a physical copy?...why is PC thriving with mostly digital sales?...gamers are the same- console, handheld and PC...why the discrepancy?...a large number of people who own a console probably also own a PC...so why the big uproar when console moves to digital only?...gamers love to be outraged about something...whether it's something big or something insignificant, gamers need to complain

Right now I can go into Walmart and buy Mafia the old country for $40

The cost on the PlayStation store?
$49.99

$10 more for digital, base game, no dlc

This is why PlayStation wants to eliminate discs, so they can control the pricing and make more.

why do PC gamers not care as much about owning a physical copy?

Because PC was on a different timeline and this started in PC space back in 2003-2004 with Valve/Steam - and there were the same complaints/pushback then. Digital just won out so the battle/care is gone on PC now.

Plus piracy was always a much more easy/accessible alternative on PC than it is with consoles. No need to wait for a console jailbreak or newer jailbreak or w/e - once the game is cracked it's cracked no matter what OS/how old or new the PC etc.

Generally it seems like 1st party games sell better on disc. Makes sense.

I to think Sony should have just announced the PS6 as digital only and kept making discs for the PS5 maybe an extra year or so longer, but I assume they thought that would eat into PS6 sales.

I agree...this console uproar will go away as well...it's just the initial news that got gamers so crazy...in 5 years it'll be forgotten

well for one thing for pc games we can get different pricing at different places even if it's just steam keys, for playstation sony sets the pricing the digital price is the same everywhere

It's actually more like 80%, but the problem with the 80% digital sales is that it also includes games that are only available digitally. Sony combines the sales of all AAA, dlc, microtransactions, free, indie and online only games which makes this 80% kinda unfair. God of War Ragnarok is 67% physical and 33% digital. You can cherry pick numbers but a lot of AAA games are majority physical, which is what really matters.
why do PC gamers not care as much about owning a physical copy?...
Who says we don't? I do believe that if Valve releases Half Life 3 as a USB Thumb Drive for $10 more, then people would buy it like crazy. Same goes for GTA6 because these are once in a lifetime games and a lot of people would like to hold these in their hands and mount them with their collection.

Also, you don't see many times when Steam shuts down peoples accounts for using their real name. As long as people feel like they own the games then this becomes less of a problem. Sony also shut down PS3 and Vita stores and took away over 500 movies that people bought. Your digital Sony games are likely to vanish one day.
why is PC thriving with mostly digital sales?...
PC's had games loaded onto hard drives which proved to be better than loading a game of a DVD or Blu-Ray, and that's how digital got pushed on PC. It was just a better gaming experience. Also, nobody ever questioned if they actually owned the digital games they bought. Everyone assumed it was like owning the game on disc, but that's not the case.
so why the big uproar when console moves to digital only?...gamers love to be outraged about something...whether it's something big or something insignificant, gamers need to complain
Because gaming is an expensive hobby and it's going to be more expensive because the removal of physical games means you're at the whim of the corporation. On PC it's easier to control prices because you have many choices where to buy games, where on Playstation you now have one choice and that's Sony. You can pirate easier on PC where on Playstation both the console and the hardware are permanently banned. Valve doesn't actively scan your PC for pirated games and then bans you. Imagine banning a PC from Epic, Steam, GoG, and etc because you were caught playing a pirated version of some game?
I agree...this console uproar will go away as well...it's just the initial news that got gamers so crazy...in 5 years it'll be forgotten
The uproar will die down, but people won't forget. The same thing happened to Xbox and you can see how quickly people forgot about it. If you have to be digital only then why stay on console? We know the PS6 will be around $1k, and Xbox maybe even more expensive.

If you have to be digital only then why stay on console?

because you have to build a PC while consoles comes come pre-assembled plug-n-play...you can buy a pre-assembled PC but it'll cost you way more than if you built it yourself (and this was before the RAMpocalypse)

Actually, full systems sometimes go for less than the standalone parts when on sale. With the ram pricing lately, prebuilts can be better deals if you watch for them.

Yep. At work it went from "Dell can suck a dick with those SSD and RAM prices, we'll buy aftermarket and add it," to "These are as good as it gets, order it from Dell."

I know you know that you can by prebuilts. This Ryzen 5500 with an RTX 5050 is $900. Consoles are not immune to RAMpocalypse either, we just haven't seen major price increases yet. The RTX 5050 isn't that much slower than a PS5 Pro either which is $900.
