Starfield

Well, I took my first ship in a side quest, but for some reason the game is bugged and won't let me rename it.

I'll change it in the ship builder, but as soon as I apply changes and exit, it goes right back to the original name.

Guess I am stuck flying around in "Damaged ship". :p

Also, I can't for the life of me find the console to access the cargo hold in this ship...

Edit: I guess that doesn't matter as you can shortcut there by pressing Q when in character inventory anyway...

You have to go to a ship tech, and modify your ship. Then hit C to check and exit, the name change button is G and you have to hit it twice, once to get the little box to pop up and once to actually let you type for some stupid reason.

Steam Guide

If anyone his having annoying microstutter I used the following guide to help smooth things out a bit. I'm not seeing any real jump in FPS but the game is much smoother.

Running the game on a 4090 RTX, AMD 3970 CPU and 64GB ram and at 4K. It's been running decently, and it would freeze for a few seconds every now and the till i updated the GPU drivers to the latest version. Still has a stutter or two but MUCH less so far.
As for the game, i'm level 7 atm and have been doing collection quests for the guy in the bank pretty much exclusively and a little of the main quest. (Got the free house perk but spending time collecting the 125,000 credits i need to pay it off. Nice house though)

19 hours in, only had one weird crash when I would try to go to Pluto (and it went away the next day). Getting a steady 60 FPS with a 5800x and 3070ti at 1440p with everything at High and having a blast.

Alas, it doesn't appear possible to jettison the Adoring Fan out of the airlock..... Yet.

Also can't wait for a Ludicrous Speed mod to take my ship to Plaid.

Chop Chop modders!;)

I'm done. One of the worst games in every aspect I've played. Un-installed tonight. What is the point of this game? Combat sucks, story sucks and graphics are laughably horrible. I could go on but what's the point. Other people will say I'm delusional.
Incredibly, this is how I feel too. I adored every other Bethesda rpg, but not this one. Just give me one damned exciting world to explore. Travelling to all these huge worlds with all these relatively small settlements just isn’t exciting.

Did anyone else forget to give their companion 1 ammo of their big shiny gun and keep wondering why they sucked ass?

I would rather have CTD's with a game that has at least a good story and good graphics than this POS. CTD can be fixed. This can't. I might be a little harsh so this is just my
2 cents. I know the game has over a million players on all platforms so am I missing something, did something happen to me!

Haven't done that as of yet. However, did give Sarah an explosive shotgun with 300 rounds. She's been a literal blast since then. :D

I didn't realize you had to give them bullets!

Anyway, I can see how people might get bored depending on what you focus on in the game but fortunately I've found switching things up as I play keeps things enjoyable. I do some exploration, then a faction quest, then a side quest, then an activity, then the main quest etc. I still haven't even attempted to build an oupost. I've messed around with the ship builder but I haven't unlocked enough levels to really do anything good with it. I've tried to tinker with ship design with the level I'm at to get the most out of each ship. That's actually another thing I like doing, as I explore I go after ships that land, take them and either sell them or redesign them.

This game seems to be very polarizing, you either love it or hate it. I've been playing Bethesda games since Daggerfall and other than the wonder of Morrowind (which was groundbreaking for open worlds IMO) I can't say I've enjoyed myself more since then. I actually love and play Fallout more than the ES series but the Bethseda versions will never match what it was like playing FO 1/2. It might just be as I've gotten older my expectations have mellowed out and I just enjoy things for what they are. I could complain about Starfield as much as anyone but I just look past what I don't like and enjoy what I do. There's nothing wrong with people not liking this, just go find another game you enjoy.

Companions still seem to have a weird scaling effect on their damage output as they grow in level. All my people still have their starting load out, and as I increase in level their damage seems to be scaling because they still do decent damage even against higher level enemies.

Yea im thinking of going solo just because they take away difficulty with no risk. Be different if they permadeathed but they just fall over and then get back up after the fight.

You can basically go hide and even though they take a while they will kill most threats right around you. Either that or they just run in front of you as you are trying to shoot someone.

After FO4 I always keep a companion with me for the extra dialog and quests. Finish one companion, grab a new one and repeat.

Side note, after about 10 hours of messing with cargo links I finally got it all working. It's a picky bitch.

I've had to Google twice in my first couple hours of gameplay because Bethesda is too lazy to include some nice tutorials on how to do certain things in the game. I didn't know how to lockpick or what the screen was showing when I first tried lock picking. Then when I got to the first space station and had to dock my ship it didn't even give me a thorough tutorial on how to do it. I hit every key on my keyboard but never had the option to dock but I can see the marker. My ship just kept ramming into the space station and almost blew up. I had to Google it. A nice tutorial would have helped. I had to also Google how to switch weapons. In every other game it's the mouse wheel. But when you use the mouse wheel you go into 3rd person. Just some half ass effort by Bethesda- again relying on modders to make their games better.

Haven't played too much - but for the few hours I've sunk in so far -

Very pleased with how well my 7900xt has handled this game. FSR off and ultra on everything, running about 60 in the city(I'm okay with that) and 90 -120 everywhere else.

What a beautiful game.

Running on my 13900KS and 4090 I'm getting high 60's to high 70's in Atlantis. On my old rig with a 9900K and 3080ti it was only getting high 30's to low 40's in Atlantis. This was at 4K ultra settings at 100 percent resolution and no FSR. Bethesda really needs to invest some money into a new game engine. This game is not that demanding it's their game engine that's why everyone is seeing such low performances on new hardware.

So, I felt like the game was getting kind of stuttery and I went to shut it off and restart it... somehow I had two copies of the game running at the same time? Whoops.

I will be asking you how that works when I actually start doing the outpost thing. Also thanks for the mod links you post. I'm constantly watch nexus for new good mods but there are so many it's tough to catch them all.

Could you give a companion a Melee weapon like the Fire Axe?
Yes, but it gets kind of annoying, no different than melee companions in the prior games. They run in front of you and block your shots, etc. Just make sure you remove other weapons and they'll use it.

More than other games I've been collecting graphic glitch photos during my play through. I'll eventually post them but for now it's a part of my play through. When I see something weird and stupid I try and take photo. I also have been taking regular wow that looks cool photos. I don't mind because it just replaces the generic photos in my load screens.

Anyone have fast travel spawn you way up in there air and you die upon impact with the ground or at least lose a bunch of health?

No, but that is absolutely a Creation engine 'thing' that happens..

What the Amazon game was doing was essentially not something that a GPU maker would expect any game to do in normal operation, though, as I understand it. In that sort of scenario, I think both parties share a bit of blame (along with Nvidia for allowing its drivers to make the GPU do that). If you're an engineer yourself, you know you don't necessarily code/blueprint things for scenarios that you assume to be impossible or just don't even cross your head as any reasonable person ever doing. Resistors and whatnot all have a "+/-" value for their actual resistance value since it isn't ideal, and likewise they have targets to meet at their factories that are probably based on common operation. We're constantly surprised by what humans are actually capable of doing, with or without any real intention or malice. Saying you can account for all scenarios is sort of like saying you can design perfection. Really sucks for the people whose cards burned up due to the sloppiness though.

Anyway, I had Starfield open all night while I slept. Had prime95 running, several browser windows, etc... it didn't crash overnight... but then I tried actually playing it for a bit and it did crash, afterwards.

One thing that I noticed that was interesting, is that for some reason the game only lets my GPU use about 75% of its TDP. It's really bizarre. Yet the GPU core is pinned at 99%, but the temps aren't as high as they would be normally, and hence overclocks higher than it would normally... because it's at a low TDP but high consumption. I'm wondering if this is what's causing it to crash. It's essentially trying an unstable overclock on a lower TDP than it should have, but slightly lower temperatures. Here's a quick image to illustrate.

Also, when alt tabbing back in, there's a large spike in the core frequency because the GPU is idle while the game is alt tabbed, so the core is cooler... I think that may also be causing some instability. I don't think this is related to my motherboard, RAM, or CPU at all now, though. CPU is running like a champ, memtest86 gave me no issues.

I've also been playing Hogwarts Legacy for about 7 hours straight now, 0 crashes. No issues. I notice that it's using up to 90-95%+ of the max rated TDP, and actually not boosting as high to begin with...

I tried turning the DLSS mod that I had off and the game actually started running smoother lol. Game was using a slight bit more of the TDP envelope, too:

I kind of doubt it'll stop crashing just because I turned DLSS off, but it's worth a shot I guess. I'll give it a whirl tomorrow when I wake up.
The DLSS mods are known to cause crashing. So....removing the mod may help ;)

The jetpack will save you, just use it right before the ground. I tried to capture a pirate ship last night and it took off, then I fell through the ship from high orbit. Survived just fine thanks to my trusty backpack.

I'm not sure I have the jetpack. I'm like 8 hours in and haven't even gone to the place in Jamison to talk to the folks. I still have that robot following me around.

Someone on reddit may have discovered a clue as to the games performance.

You can grab NPC's hair.

They cover all sorts of stuff under the Help section in the system menu (where you can save/load/quit etc.)

I gave Sarah an upgraded epic (purple text) laser rifle (the one that starts with E, forget what it is called) and now she kicks so much ass, she often kills the bad guys before I can. I'm thinking there must be some sort of modifier bug in there causing this, as she is really too effective with the thing.

does the game give you the ability to fully remap all controls (kb/m)?

You get a jetpack fairly early, but you have to unlock a skill on the skill tree in order to use it.

I ahve not come across any controls that cannot be remapped. There are A LOT of controls in this game though. It will take a little time to get custom controls right (and not interfering with each other)
