42" OLED MASTER THREAD

As of last night only 8 had sold, may be everyone is waiting on more price cuts or JP has finally killed demand.
I don't think many are interested in purchasing on eBay from Buydig or Electronics Express. For most its Bestbuy to get GeekSquad warranty that covers burn in or Amazon/Costco so you can easily return.

Also Electronics Express (the 2nd eligible seller with the Labor Day coupon) is not an authorized dealer so LG won't honor warranty. Buydig is but you have to make sure to request a invoice from them because transactions aren't retained in your eBay purchase history.

Well I couldn't hold out anymore, I ordered the LG C2 for $1142 after taxes off the Ebay Labor Day sale. Used the savings to buy an Ergotron HX. I assume I need some kinda adapter for the TV. I figured whatever discounts from my purchase price to Black Friday's sale will be worth the 3 months usage. Can't wait to see OLED in real life.

It's amazing. Loving my C2 so far. I'm using this with an Ergotron LX - works great: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MCMTCP3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Not bad! You should love it.

Yeah, the display is pretty light. Mine has been on my LX for months. It hasn't dropped a bit since I set it up.

Jeebus that stand is huge. Is it possible to mount the panel on an arm ? You would need so much desk depth for that thing.
Almost certainly can't mount it. The stand looks like a similar design to the Corsair bendable monitor and that one can't be VESA moutned because the stand contains most of the electronics to run the monitor. Its going to be an issue with all the bendable panels I'm afraid.

Only the ones that are adjustable bend. The fixed bend ones should be easier to make VESA mountable.

I'm really torn on whether to keep my 32GQ950 or return it and go with a PG42UQ. Money isn't a concern, just looking for the best fit.

Just go bigger if you have the desk for it. Immersion will be greater if you use it for games/

I find it appalling that a 32" globally lit IPS monitor was priced not far off a C2 or PG42UQ at launch until recently as inventory sat and the price dropped.

My main issue is that I'm 80% productivity. This is where I'm torn, I know it'll be worse for that and it will probably burn in.

I know there's a lot of snark on it, but truthfully it is much better than any other 32" flat available right now. I have IPS side monitors and seeing the glow on them in the dark compared to the GQ is shocking. The FI32U I had was bad for glow as well.

Yea I think OLED shines in HDR content so for productivity I'm not sure this would be a huge benefit for you over the 32GQ950

If I could get one now (Canada), within the return period for the GQ I would try both. It looks like it's still not available though.

32" is a great size but that particular display is the very definition of overpriced. The PG42UQ is like only about 200 euros more over here. I can't believe LG is still peddling a low zone count IPS display for more money than e.g the Samsung Neo G7.

I fully expect that we will have something better next year or the one after that.

I’m similar but prepared to take the risk. I’ll be using the uniform brightness option, which lowers maximum brightness to cut down on dimming, plus whatever anti burn features they have, I’ll be on it seven hours per day.

Since 2016 I’ve had various OLEDs for movie watching and yet to have one that burned in, though I’ve seen short term image retention at times on earlier models, which would clear anyway. Fingers crossed sensible usage will see us alright.

Looks like Phillips is the first to solve the OLED raised black issue on their new lineup:

On another note, the guy who reviewed the PG42UQ first has also just reviewed the C2 and measured both in a lit environment taking into account reflections to determine how their surface finishes effect contrast. Looks like the PG42UQ's matte coating is not very aggressive at all while the AW suffers pretty badly:

That sounds amazing but I wonder if there's going to be an input lag penalty for using that feature.
Based on the way its worded sounds like some form of processing is occurring so it will likely have some input lag penalty but I can't imagine it being severe. Hopefully just 2-3ms since its probably just dynamically updating gamma based on a table of values.

That's the sort of processing doesn't need to know information of the frame ahead, just the past, so they could do it without adding any latency.

For the PG42UQ, newegg is now showing this in case you missed it:

OUT OF STOCK. ETA: 9/7/2022.

From AW3821DW to LG C2.

Things I like about the C2
- Contrast looks amazing, dark areas in games are actually dark now.
- Much more vertical space, makes games more immersive.
- 4K Resolution.

Things I don't like
-A little reflective. Had to turn off the RGB on my keyboard cause the reflection was bothering me.
-Flat. I was so used to my curved monitor that the screen looked like it bends away at first. I suppose I'll get used to this new viewing angle over time.

Overall, definitely happy with the upgrade. Hopefully the glossy doesn't bother me too much when it gets sunny outside.

Sounds like the LG Flex OLED would solve your issues by being curved and matte lol.

cvinh, you don't find your desk too small? how can you get anything done w/ such a small desk. And you still put plants on it? where's the computer speaker? Where do you have space if you need to charge your laptop, or backup your PC w/ external drive, you need a bigger desk

It's fine lol. When I sit back in my chair my head is a good 3 feet away from the TV so it's a good distance. I don't really do any work at home. This is just a gaming set up for me. I don't use speakers anymore. I always preferred headphones.

On another note, I forgot to turn HDR on so I did today and omg what a difference HDR makes! I was definitely missing out on good HDR from my old monitor.

Don't forget to set Input Lag to Boost. It is crucial for lower lag gaming. In standard mode the input delay is very mediocre, borderline disappointing.

Cobbled together these graphics from a different one. Quote is from another thread but thought I'd drop it here since the view distance thing came up again. Shows what most of us are already aware of but it's easier to see in a graphic I think.

42" 4k
======
4k flat: 60PPD 68deg viewing angle = 29" view distance
4k flat: 70PPD 55deg viewing angle = 35" view distance
900R: 70PPD fixed focal point = 35.4" view distance (900mm)
1000R: 77PPD fixed focal point = 39.4" view distance (1000mm)
4k flat: 80PPD 48deg view angle = 41.1" view distance

For flat screens, a 45deg - 55 deg viewing angle is generally best to see the extents of the screen comfortably. Sitting at a distance nearing the screen's diagonal measurement forms an equilateral pyramid or cone viewing angle with the screen size. With this screen at 900R you would still get 70PPD at it's "fixed" 900mm minimum focal point. 900mm = 35.4" view distance. The idea is that the bend of the screen fills your perspective for immersion.

Once you sit closer than the focal point of the "lens", you've just zoomed the extents of the screen off of the page (your human FoV) so to speak.

Sitting past the fixed curve of a screen's focal point:

Sitting past the human viewing angle vs. a flat screen.

What a shit show. My newegg PG42UQ order was voided and my account banned. Been a customer since like 2003 with 500+ orders. No explanation what so ever.

Meanwhile my Amazon order just got an ETA:

I know Amazon is super conservative with their ETA's but 2 months out made me chuckle.

How man displays did you return over the years? They are getting stricter with this kind of behaviour…

I don't buy displays from newegg. This is the first in like 6-7 years. I use them mainly for builds since they get hardware before anyone else.

I have a Jonsbo D30 ordered from them coming next week. Makes no sense.

if you scroll up a few pages, I wrote way back then that their service is poor and anyone should avoid them. I just had another incident with them 2 weeks ago. The key is to find a replacement place like them. I would like to hear suggestion

amazon is not an electronics store. So they don't have the wide selection on say for e.g., a USB C Hub. Newegg does have some market place dealer that sells laptop that has been upgraded. For e.g., a laptop w/ hard drive upgrade to a SSD. So as far as wide selection goes on not so common item, using USB C hub as an e.g, newegg does have it.

Off topic but Amazon sells MANY USB hubs, I have to order them for work often. On topic, I am wanting the 42 C2 but my use is for work, gaming 2nd so I am thinking I can get by with the warranty that covers burn in?
