Elden Ring (From Software RPG)

Haha wow, fuck this guy and FromSoftware for leaving their game so vulnerable to this kind of asshattery.

I know it's a shitty thing to say but at least we're more "safe" on PS5 from this asshat ? One of the reasons I don't play any games anymore really. Everyone ruins it basically.

Well at least in this game you can play online and avoid the invasions. It’s not like Demon Souls where you get invaded by a guy with scraping spear that breaks all your equipment the zone after beating a boss.

The hacker mentioned above sucks though, hopefully From Software figures out security at some point.

It's only PC that gets the hackers. No crossplay so you're safe.

Have you gotten to Caelid yet? Here's your best option for low to mid level rune farming. Go to the Third Church of Marika in Limgrave, there's a waypoint portal that will take you to Dragonbarrow (north Caelid). There's a boss outside the door that will wreck your shit, but you can go around him. Down the hill there's another grace point and a bridge where a dragon is roaming. He'll also wreck your shit, avoid. But the area in between is where some normal mobs called Vulgar Militia roam and you can essentially circle and kill them on horseback without much trouble. Once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy and very low risk being so close to a grace point. They give 1000 runes each and should only take you a few hits to kill. You can get 20-30 levels there in literally no time.
yea, so these things work. but they also one shot me. XD

Something's telling me nope.

So I have the hang of these militia dudes. Can't do it on a horse, but I wreck them on the ground. I jumped about ten levels so far so this is good.

Vig/End/Str each at 23 right now. I'm thinking just keeping them even?

I think you might fare better in the southern areas of the map, such as the areas south and south east of the game's start. Skipping the starter zones and rushing to the mid/end game zones isn't really recommended for a new player but hey if you're having fun that's what counts.
You can also go back to castle stormveil and explore around, even after beating the boss - there's lots of side areas and content in there that's easy to miss.

oh. heh. I thought this was part of the starter zone. XD

I'll keep leveling on these militia guys. I've got a system down. THen I'll head back then.

no one here playing with kb/m?...PC gaming was meant for kb/m!
ok, first, no hate whatsoever towards anyone who wants to play any game with kb/m.

but what is the connection between pc gaming and kb/m? a game should be played with what it works best with. the game's design is what determines that, not whether it's on pc or not (bugs/unintended issues notwithstanding, as is often the case)

PC has always been associated with kb/m...consoles with a controller...yes you can play PC games with a controller but I've always felt that controllers are only really required for racing games on PC

Yeah, I slaughtered a ton of those little guys. Once I got careless and one of them would kill me with a quick combo, but for the most part they were excellent to level on.

Also, I figured out what my ultimate RPG would be: Take Witcher 3-style story telling and dialogue tree combined with Elden Ring-style combat. As much as I love the combat/exploration in this game, I'm finding it hard to be engaged by its storytelling but I bet when I replay Witcher 3 (once the raytracing update drops), its combat will feel too simple.

that doesn't really make any sense, but you do you, boo :)

In the capital now. :snaphappy:
Can do the militia guys on a horse if using ranged also. At my best i was doing about 30+ every 8-10 minutes or so.

that's my only *real* beef with these games.. they really have no story at all. i know they do some 'worldbuilding' lore, some of which is probably pretty detailed, but what the player experiences in the end result is basically just "player character traverses a medieval fantasy themed world with medieval fantasy themed monsters," and fights the big bad at the end. that's it. even if you go and watch some lengthy 'video essays' like what VaatiVidya produces, you're still left with a bunch of vague ideas about key players and events. and even then, half of those videos are pure conjecture because From (intentionally) doesn't really fill in the blanks.

it's fine and all, and its pretty obvious that a lot of people out there don't need a fleshed out story, interesting characters etc if the gameplay is fun and the visual design is creative. but damn would i love to see From take the formula and integrate with storytelling like witcher 3 or mass effect or name-your-favorite-rpg-with-strong-storytelling here.

No it hasn't. The beauty of PC is that it's compatible with a huge range of hardware accessories. Game controllers, joysticks, steering wheels, yokes, pedals etc...

and most of that list is related to driving/flying games which definitely are best suited for those devices...

there is no reason to assume 'pc version of game? must use kb/m!'

pc ports of games have had plug and play support for the major console controllers for many many years now. whether a game is played on pc or console is irrelevant. it's just a personal preference/experience thing.

Yeah, Platformers, Third person NON shooters, puzzle games.. Some games play BETTER with a gamepad, believe it or not! For pinpoint accuracy to click on something, be it an enemy's head or a squad of units, mouse is great. But for freeform and sensitive directional movement a thumbstick is really nice to have. WASD is not great for minute adjustments.

So we're moving right along. I've completed the castle at the southern end. Morne? I think? Helped that Edgar guy. Got the sword...that I can't use.

And I killed the horse dude by the start on the second try.

Starting to gain a little traction now.

Just because I want my whack at the horse :p

KB/M is absolutely the best for FPS, some third person, RTS, isometric non-twin-stick control games (think Diablo), point and click adventuring, some simulation etc.

Arcade sticks for fighters and old arcade style games.

Pads for everything else, sometimes overlapping a little into any given genre.

Flight setups, wheels, or pads for sims.

Elden Ring, I could see using pad or M/KB actually per taste. If I was at my desk, I’d lean M/KB. But, I hauled my PC to the living room cabinet, connected a Dual Sense, and couldn’t be happier. M/KB isn’t great on the couch.

While mouse is objectively supperior for a lot of things, a keyboard isn't necessarily the best input device for a lot of gaming.
WASD is inferior to a joystick for movement.
A keyboard only allows 8 directions of movement. A joystick allows 360 degrees movement. Also a joystick allows any movement speed, a keyboard is limited to one speed unless you hold a button to sprint or walk or whatever.
Unfortunately all those gaming keypads suck and don't have mechanical keys, don't have a real analog joystick, or have other major problems.

The fastest farm I was able to find fighting them was later on when I had the faith Lightning spear spell. There's also a Physick that gives you unlimited mana + bonus lightning damage and if you apply that you can one shot them with lightning bolts from the horse and take the entire area down in about a minute. Pretty slick.

And Leyndell is the most beautiful part of this game. Really amazing.

I went the wrong way into a bunch of mobs but will try another route today. (Ran out of flasks with no Site of Grace in the area) Not too bad though mob-wise. Can take down most stuff with 1-3 spell hits, and 4-6 for the tougher ones.

After finally getting through Forbidden West, I'm ready to get crackin' on Elden Ring at long last.

Anything (broad, non-spoilerish) I should know before getting started? Is performance passable or are there any homebrew suggestions if not?

I will agree to that to a point. A joystick is absolutely worse than either an arcade style stick, D-Pad or a keyboard when it comes to precision fighting, platform, and other precision-requiring games (especially in the 2D genres). Otherwise, yes, a joystick is great, especially when you can use it to limit your walk/run speeds variably for example.

Basically what I was getting at is that there are plenty of tools for the job, and choose the one that works best for the application. One can't simply say that one of the tools is the best, even for a given platform.

Choose a Mage for the fun side of the game. I would go with Incantation or Light Magic rather than Sorcery.
You get spells early on at the Round Table.

I'm always a brute and plan to stick with that approach. I want the largest/strongest club or greatsword I can get and I want to get close and bludgeon shit with 'em.

On my system, performance is still great with those occasional hitch things. I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's a bit annoying, but shouldn't impact your enjoyment. Something that I hope gets addressed further soon though.

I have no tips, as other than DS3, I'm still new-ish to these games, and this one feels a bit different to me than DS3. So it's basically new to me too other than that I have many hours into it now. I'm still sneaking around most bosses, opening up map pieces, taking down the largest enemies I can short of the big bosses for practice, and really enjoying mounted combat. I would say from my limited experience, to approach it like a From game to a degree, but don't come in expecting it to be exactly like any of the previous ones. If that makes sense.

I'm no help there. I've always used a light dex/str (with light int for basic spellery) with high damage short weapons. It's actually pretty difficult, as I tend to die a TON, but it's a lot of fun anyway. :D I really need to pick up a good bow, so I can at least do a little damage from far away. I've spent the whole game close up, and while I can damage things a lot, if they have one pixel too much health, they'll use it to destroy me in a hit or three. :D

ok whatever but some of the enemies are pretty fast.

I'm not too concerned. I've made it through Dark Souls 1-3 (and Demons + Bloodborne) at least 3 times each with that approach. I'm all about damage per hit and making every hit count. My Souls characters are like Zangief. That's not to say that I expect this to be just like those other games, but I can play with some finesse (Sekiro) as well. I'm not the spell-casting sort.

I’m having fun as a samurai with vit/dex/end but I don’t really know what I’m doing with my build. I might respec at some point.

How does re-spec'ing work? Is it something you can do repeatedly? You don't have to spoil anything if you don't want, I'm just curious how readily available that option is.

It’s item based and unlocked after one of the bosses. I’m not sure how many of the items you can find in total but I’ve found 2 without trying and am about 35 hours in.

There are a few opportunities that I know of for this. One is bosses, (which I haven't done, so I'm not sure which ones). I did find an item for this that wasn't from a boss though by accident. At least I think that's what it's for. I haven't used it, because I'm pushing my current build further.
