Elden Ring (From Software RPG)

Sekiro is the most satisfying game I've ever played, I absolutely recommend it.
I played roughly half of my 112 hours in Elden Ring as a melee class specifically using guard counter. It is very satisfying but it unfortunately falls off late game due to weapon arts and magic becoming so much more powerful.

Put me down for a maybe. I'll wait it out for a bit for the hype to drop. Maybe in a couple months I'll grab it when the price falls. Game looks neat, but like someone else said, if I have to keep wiping at a boss every ten minutes for two hours at a time, its not going to stick with me.

You don’t have to keep wiping at a boss, if you are stuck go somewhere else and get stronger.

The game is anything but linear and you could probably wander through the first 30 hours of content I experienced without beating a story boss if you didn’t want to.

If you're making the comparison to Sekiro, they are completely different beasts, Sekiro is a fast paced game where you have little room for error.

I say give it a try no matter what, buy it on sale for cheap if you want.

So, as someone who beat this game, I gotta ask because I never attempted Sekiro - worth a playthrough? I couldn't stand the slow action pace of DS1 or Demon Souls (even the remastered version didn't do it for me). But I hear Sekiro is a lot more fast paced. From a challenge perspective, does it put Elden Ring to shame? I will say that for Elden Ring, if I did not use spirit summons there's no way I would have beaten this game. I also think the game was built with that in mind, I don't see many people playing through without using them at all.

As a minor spoiler as far as spirit ashes go -
once you get the Mimic Tear spirit ash, the game becomes almost too easy to some regard. Making a pure copy of yourself that uses all of your builds weapon arts and spells is admittedly overpowered
Sekiro's combat style definitely requires more finesse on the player's part. Some fights you simply can't brute force your way through it. Gotta learn the enemy movesets, timing, and spacing.

That said, Sekiro is very streamlined and doesn't offer a myriad of ways to solve a problem. Sekiro is very linear and has maybe 1/10th the items that even Dark Souls had.

I found combat in Sekiro very rewarding. If I beat a particular tough boss, it felt more like I did it based on pure skill, as opposed to some meta build carrying me through it. Far less broken game mechanics on my first playthrough.

Sekiro is not for everyone though. When you hit a brick wall, the only option is literally to git gud. Some people might not like that being the only option to progress.

Anyone know the best controller setup to change items without using the D Pad? I find it's not very tactical to take my thumb off the joystick to change items on the D pad. I don't wanna shell out for the Xbox Elite controller either. What are yall custom controller configs?

I use my right thumb to cycle through items on the D-pad.

Practically all but 2 zones are possible to reach without defeating a story boss. This is pretty much how I've been playing the game. That doesn't mean you won't have to face a boss though. To get up the cliffs to one of the other zones, you need to go through an optional dungeon, which means facing a sub boss. Not easy to do, mind you, but still possible.

Sadly, I'm now at the point where I need to either Level up (currently Level 7), or progress through the story. I'm just not good enough to face some of the dungeons now, and don't have the stats to cast spells or wield certain weapons.

My problem with these types of games is that I never want to use items. I haven’t used any Ash of War stuff, levelled up my summons or used the rune things because I’m afraid to commit. Pretty much all I have done is upgrade weapons.

Edit: I just read that ashes of war are reusable, that’s good to know.

Well I think most of us saw the place early and just decided it was the right way to go lol, yea Margit took me about 15 attempts at level 10 but I didn't find him any harder than typical Souls bosses, so I did continue feeling I was going the right way. I literally ran straight to Stormveil when I started my game, I didn't even know about Arts of War, Upgrading Weapons, and was confused by the description of Round Table Hold (I thought it was for multiplayer so I didn't go there until way after Stormveil Castle). Godrik took me closer to 20 attempts, I was probably about SL12, at this point I thought I might have been under leveled.

I plan on starting up a mage or bandit next game and will likely visit Stormveil around SL20-30. I think this is the more appropriate level range for this area, especially for people newer to the genre.

I did glance at Fextralife's recommended soul level by location, It seems accurate to a certain extent, but I recommend subtracting 10-15 levels, -2/3 weapon upgrades per region otherwise the game feels a tad too easy for souls veterans.
Thanks for the link, I was going to search for something like this tonight before playing.

You don't lose the Ashes of War by using them (Maybe you can lose them if you sell a weapon with one attached but you can remove them first). You'll have enough summon upgrades to do a few different summons so just pick a couple you like. Save the rune things until you're wanting a level or to buy something and then use however many it takes; you'll end up with plenty.

Also ashes of war are the only way to infuse your weapon. They don't disappear on use and if you only have one of a specific type it will ask you if you want to remove it from your other weapon to apply to the new one.

Does the weapon remain same level and everything like before you applied the ash of war when you remove it ? I have a +10 claymore I might mess with. Swapped to the bloodhound fang +5 and it's better than the +10 claymore.

Depending on the ash of war, it may infuse better scaling stats. You're weapon level will remain the same and you can remove the ash of war and apply it to another weapon. You'll lose the infusion but retain whatever level the weapon is at.

You can play with ashes of war as much as you want and there are no negative effects. So if you want to bring your favorite weapon in doing magic damage, and switch it to normal after you can.

I've been using summon ashes but haven't tried weapon ones yet. I can't stop playing this game.... The moon witch was a good boss.

I’m probably being bone-headed but I’m in the opening area of Limgrave and I keep getting my ass handed to me by the dude at the Gatefront Ruins. I haven’t upgraded anything yet (still at the starting Level 10 as Confessor). The dude with the big shield and spear is violating and abusing my psyche. Is this something people typically need to gear-up for? Or is this a skill/difficulty test and I’m just plain failing? Because honestly I don’t really see the next logical place to go. I suppose I can just try running by and coming back later…

- bank some "runes" (the number in the bottom right) to level up, this is key for players who aren't very skilled to be able to overcome more challenging enemies
- explore other areas, look for better gear, and upgrade your gear at the church ruins right at the beginning area
- you don't have to (in most cases...) punish yourself endlessly with a boss you're not ready to take on yet (either your personal skill level, or character stats/equipment)

Well, Sekiro has some optional bosses, and they are without question the toughest bosses in the game. You don't have to beat them to 'beat' the game, you just won't get the best ending. Owl father took me days of attempts. I basically tried to beat him for about 2-3 hours every night for about a full week. I've yet to encounter anything in Elden Ring that compares to some of the bosses in Sekiro.

Tried Rahdan last night and only got him to about 40% in about 5-6 tries. Using the NPC summons but about halfway through the fights they mostly stop appearing, so kept on getting smashed before i can do much more damage. May try and respecc though for better damage, but still will play as a pure mage. (No melee except dagger)

The way I understood the Named weapons was that they could not be infused with ashes of war; they are what they are. As for their weapon level, the ones that are upgraded with Somber Smithing Stones, are roughly 2x the level of a un-named weapon. Definitely, that Bloodhound's Fang punches above its percieved level. Also, it's a Dex scaling weapon of a C quality, vs the D scaling on the claymore. If you've dumped stats into dex, it'll hit harder.

You mean the knight wielding the spear patrolling the middle, or the one guarding the approach from the west? The former is tougher than the latter. The best way to deal with spear-wielding enemies is to bait them into their charging attack, which you can either easily sidestep or parry. The charging attack they do has a wide parry window, making it easy. That leaves them open for attack. Your starting weapon is not strong enough to stagger them with their shield using a jumping or charging attack, so I wouldn't try that.

The first golden knight is a troll. Nothing in the game is preventing you from going around that enemy and coming back later.

That is outside the Church of Elleh, though. Gatefront Ruins is the encampment outside Stormfront Gate where you get your first map piece.

That spear dude is nowhere near as hard as the golden one though.

This is what I figured as well. I will mess with claymore and ashes but the fang kicks balls in have 40 STR and 25 DEX right now I think and will get DeX up moar.

I'm going to divorce this game untill I have actual time to play and not get sucked in again. Going to focus on Art instead.

Any technical improvments or still a shit show? There were talks of some patches?

did you do a blind playthrough?...how much content did you miss?
I played blind until post game. I was in the f*cking Well of Sofria exploring the subterranean map before I even took on Margit and let me tell you, doing your own thing in this game is the most fun part about it, but also makes it very, very hard.

I missed a lot, but only a few things were broken that I could not complete, the game did a good job at not totally locking you out of a ton of stuff. I did miss a couple of somber 10 stones for +10 boss weapon upgrading which made me pretty sad. But post game I essentially used the wiki to go back and kill any straggler bosses and get any items I felt necessary to have before NG+, which I have still not yet decided if I want to do.

They made 3 small patches (including the day 1 patch).

They have made some branch updates on the backend, in the past day or so. But it seems like they are spending a little more time, before they make it a live update. The previous 3 patches came less than 10 hours after a branch update.

Seems like it is stable for most people at this point, so I'm sure they're working on including fixes and updates needed in other areas for this next one.

If you want to see something really broken check out the Royal Knight's Resolve ash of war. Supposed to double damage for 8 seconds but apparently it doesn't drop after 8. Infinite double damage buff? Sounds like that needs a patch.

Really cool to see the inside even though it's likely nowhere near complete. I bet this comes with the first expansion like they did with DS3 since they already did a little work on it.

Definitely hope to see more from this game. I tried to boot up DS3 last night and it was just so meh comparatively that I couldn't bring myself to play it at all.

I've never had such a miserable time playing a video game in my life. This is the worst experience I ever had with pretty much anything. And if you knew an ex of mine, you'd know it's bad.

Yay! Let's make a game where everything is stronger, has more health, can bend and twist with unnatural motions and even have 5 or 6 times the move sets as the player. And hours after the player finally beats just one enemy out of the many, let's give that player one POS item for a reward! Fawkk yeah!

Welcome to Souls.....Bitch.

IMO Dark Souls 3 feels better to play. There's less input delay and every action is generally also faster. Elden Ring has more gameplay options and features. But the input delay is really annoying and I hope they tone it down. Especially for an overall slower game than Dark Souls 3.
