Elden Ring (From Software RPG)

Small tip to those either in the middle of Stormveil Castle or who have just finished it:

It’s probably a good idea to head south first to the peninsula. It’s a small area and has some decent rewards. It feels around the same level as Limrock or slightly higher. I missed it and went north immediately after the castle.

All I can say about this is Stormveil is kicking my ass.

I think one of the biggest shakeups for Elden Ring Vs. Dark Souls is this:

In Dark Souls games, if you come across a spot which you can't get past (a boss, group of enemies, harsh area, etc), you are generally reserved to keep trying or go grind souls for more stats or more appropriate gear. which can be boring.

In Elden Ring------you can just go somewhere else. I mean that the opportunity to do so, is exponentially more present, in ER. Even if you really do just want to "grind" a bit and still try to complete the part which you are stuck on-----you can "grind" by exploring a new place. I think this game will be a lot more appealing to many people..

i thought the same thing, but i have seen a few people who said they've stayed away from souls games until Elden Ring for that reason, but what happens is the stress turns into saving up the runes and trying not to die twice without 'banking' them. so it's kinda the same in a way, it just kinda shifted over to a different aspect of the game, albeit probably a less stressful one overall.

These Bears are big and bad

Comixbooks is living his best life right now.

I'm currently stuck in a cave with a bunch of gang banging goblins.
I raged hard last night because of those fucks. Some of those dungeons are awful the further you get in the game. The actual bosses are nothing compared to missing a block or dodge when you’ve got 15 goblins riding your dick.

It’s even more rage inducing when after you die they slap the shit out of you more and your dead body has another bloodloss animation. I make it a point to torture these things and take my time having fun killing them in new exciting ways.

Throwing knives will lure one at a time. Doesn't help with the bastards that are on the ceiling or the wall behind you but they can help to lower the amount you have to take on at once.

You can craft bone darts out of all those thin beast bones you find. They don't do a lot of damage, but they're essentially free and are enough to get the imps down from their perch.

Okay I only leveled 4 times since I started the game and I have died to Margit over 20 times. Guess I'll level a bit more.

Explore a bit more. Don't forget to upgrade your weapons. Also, sit down at the Grace fragment outside Margit's fog wall again to talk to Melina if you haven't, yet.

also never forget consumables and crafting. thoughtful item usage can make *all* the difference sometimes, and it gets ignored by a lot of newbies

Yea no regrets here either, I'm likely no where close to complete, 70 hours in and feel it's the best game I've played in atleast 3-5 years, possibly ever tbh. Sekiro was fantastic and likely the most satisifying game I've played, but Elden Ring, feels so epic while playing, I'm pretty happy with what it has to offer. I can't even imagine how many hours I'll get in Elden Ring. I wouldn't mind if FromSoftware made a medium size project similar to Sekiro/Bloodborne/Dark Souls while working on another Elden Ring type game.

Hit level 80 tonight, got the bell bearings turned in for the first 4 levels of weapon upgrades so can just buy them now. ( Took my Acadedy Glintstone Staff to level 13) The next few bearing drops will take a while i think.
Also will probably will farm Gravewort so i can upgrade my Ash summons more.
Also decided to take on Godrick the Grafted before i logged off and actually beat him on the first try.

Haven’t had too much time to play yet (hopefully will this weekend) but thoughts after about 2 hours:

Game is amazing. I love the look of the open-world area and it really encourages you to walk around and explore. Gameplay is pretty fun so far, I went with the Astrologer and I’m really enjoying the magic system so far. I always went with melee focused characters in other Souls games and wanted to try something different. I can’t wait until I’m strong enough to kill the Tree Sentinel bastard, that’s my current goal.

Performance wise things have been really good. I’m running the game utterly maxed out at 4K. No frame rate dips yet and it’s been pretty smooth so far. There have been a couple notable stutters when the game streams in an area but otherwise I haven’t felt any of the microstutter issues others are having. To double check my results I used Riva to check FPS and frame time and while running around for 15 minutes the frame time was solid. That said, I’m still only in the super early part of Limgrave and I am not at all confident that these results will stay consistent as I keep playing.

ER4 (2).png

This is where I get a stutter everytime. The Stormhill Shack. Just run back and forth and it stutters. Lucky for me it's not to bad and I can play without a problem.

small patch was put out to correct issues with controllers which i think was the cause of the crash i and many others were running into. so thats good.

enjoying the game very much, just took out Tree Sentinel. the mounted combat is really fun in its own way... i died probably 25 times but i was actually having fun rather than just super pissed off lol.

now if they can eliminate those area loading stutters the experience would just be sublime.

Today's patch messed up the sound for me. All sound goes static and stuttery for several seconds. Then it will clear up for about 5 seconds, and then static and stutter, etc.

I tried restarting the computer and its the same. I'm not running any mods to the game. My only active "tweak" for the game, is the registry key which changes the shader cache behavior for AMD.

Are enemies somewhat scaled to your level from when you spawn in? I keep exploring and ending up in situations where I'm like, "Okay I prolly shouldn't be here yet", but I end up doing okay. Whatever that underground area in Mistwood is called with the elevator that takes forever....I figured for sure at lvl 25 I was too low for that, but got pretty far into it. Ghost Vikings fucked me up lol

I know Bosses scale with other coop I don't think single player does because my damage increases. Thst elevator is higher level I went down there but didn't explore.

Also, protip if you are dual wielding......LB1 swings both swords. RB1 swings 1 sword.

I might have been lvl 20 or so before I realized this :grumpy:

I think the bosses are but not sure. I buffed up my Health, mind, ect and some fights are absurdly easy now, while others are still giving me fits. (Red Wolf at the Academy for one) Killed the Demi-Human Queen in about 30 seconds.

Other tip that took me forever to figure out was that weapons change their physical attack type based on what attack you use. Makes a huge difference on certain enemy types.

Haha that's called power stance and it's the whole point of running two swords! :)

I realize this is probably an asinine question but what’s the general consensus here - PC or PS5? I have never chosen a console version of anything over PC when given the choice. I’m fairly bad at aiming with a controller but can manage. For example I’ve played through TLOU, TLOU2, Uncharted 4, Ghost of Tsushima, and currently Horizon Forbidden West - all on default difficulties. That said I can forget about any sort of fast paced aiming, like multiplayer first person shooters, on console. I guess the meat of my question is how much fast-paced aiming is involved in Elden Ring? Seems like very little from what I’ve watched.

Pretty much no fast-paced aiming as 95% of the time you're locked on so that you auto-orient toward the enemy. I would go PC first and see how the performance is on your system; you'll be able to see pretty quick and then refund it if it's bad.

PC. I tried the game on an Xbox Series X, and the frame pacing and FPS issues are much more annoying than the occasional stutter on the PC version.

Another issue I ran into on the Series X was that turning your character was either being buffered or your inputs are just not being polled fast enough. I would often just stop in my tracks, or the game wouldn't allow me to turn, which got me killed several times through no fault of my own. I was playing the game in performance mode. I have never run into those types of input issues in my time on the PC version so far. Input delay outside of my display is nonexistent, and I am able to always turn on a dime no matter what is happening.

I'm not sure what you were experiencing with the ignored controller inputs.

At this point, the PC version is a giant roulette wheel. When the game launched, it was unplayable for me. due to rampant stutter, lurching, rubberbanding, freezing. I refunded it.

Then they started patching it, so I got excited and bought it again. After a couple of patches and tweaking the AMD shader cache behavior with a registry key----the game was very playable. Still had some stutters, but nothing unplayable. However, last night's patch has broken my sound. The sound is now all staticky and stuttery. So, its unplayable.

I don't think the console versions have gotten new patches yet. The PS5 version in performance mode has a lot of stuttering and can drop frames into the low 40's/high 50's. But....its otherwise very playable.

The PS4 code played on PS5 is locked at 60fps in most areas and situations. But it does look a fair bit worse in open grassy areas, with pretty low level of detail. However, it is currently the most solid way to play, in terms of stutters and overall performance.

i think the takeaway here, even if your personal experience was pretty good, should be that from really needs to get their shit together on the technical side.
