Elden Ring (From Software RPG)

played 35 hours since launch. all 4AM bed times this weekend. performance wise, i have some minor hiccups that have mostly occurred in open areas where it's raining/windy and i've had 2 total system lockups (from my 3090 overheating, i think) - but never anything that has been a long delay that got me killed. both system lock ups were while i was out of combat thankfully, so no deaths from that.

i gotta say though...i don't normally play so much in such a short period of time, this game has me hooked the same way BOTW did. normally dark souls requires me to take breaks because of the frustration, but this one seems to be much friendlier with the open world, mount, ability to spirit summon etc. i only get 80+ hours in maybe 2 games a year that i'm really into, this one will definitely be one of those.

Finally killed Margit, with Luehl the Headless as my summon. Summon actually survived the whole fight. lol The main boss is in Stormveil is going to be a pain to kill though i think.

color me jelly :/ i'm sure i wouldve done the same without the tech issues. to say i'm eager for patches is an understatement

What I like about this game is that it provides the option of just doing other stuff if you get tired of a boss, and yeah, I get the same vibes from this game that I did from BOTW.

Keyboard or controller on PC? I played 3-4 hours this weekend and found keyboard/mouse exceedingly frustrating, the mappings feel completely illogical. Much better with my old ps4 controller.

Some initial ruminations...

I'm not sure if it takes time, but I'm really not enjoying this game. Like Dark Souls, I find it far too easy to lose progress and the enemy respawns are just dumb. I'll keep at it, but it's just not sticking so far. Also, I'm trying to be open minded, but am finding the dialogue a bit cringy in places: the same ganeral awkwardness you see in RE and Devil May Cry games.

On the bright side, I only noticed a single stutter so far the whole time I played with exceptionally good performance (playing at 4k with setting at max, 5800 and 3080 ti). The art and design is excellent, but the graphics are very much last gen. The only technical issue I've seen is alt+tab back to windows literally freezes my whole system requiring a reboot.

Game seems cool but I've submitted a refund request until they fix the stuttering problems. I played about an hour and a half and it stutters in the same areas and it's pretty bad, and usually I don't notice this stuff. Apparently one of the primary issues is when shaders load and turning them down helps. I've tried just about everything else and am kind of fed up, since this wasn't really mentioned in any of the reviews or forums I checked out. I purposefully avoided preordering or buying this until a day or so after people had tried it, and still got burned.

Graphically I'm not blown away but it looks ok. I should probably just go finish Sekiro or something while I wait for this to be fixed.

[Edit:] DF's video here at about 9m09s is exactly what I'm experiencing.

Elden Ring’s character creator fails Black players

You can do just about anything with the character creator except have a Black hairstyle...I just don’t understand how a game, after numerous, numerous calls for greater diversity and developers acknowledging its Black community members through Black Lives Matter posts and well wishes during Black History Month, can still fail to account for Black players...it’s certainly a choice in the year 2022, one that unfortunately reinforces a culture of exclusion already endemic to video games...

https://www.theverge.com/2022/2/25/22951205/elden-rings-character-creator-black-hairstyles

You can make your character basically whatever you want color-wise, lookswise, etc. Not really sure what this is complaining about. The character model editor is awful though and the only nice thing about it is that it shows you (in red) the previous value or something before you hit save.

Also, for hotkeys/key mapping I followed this guide and made a few changes and things worked well enough: https://www.upcomer.com/how-to-get-the-best-pc-keybinds-for-elden-ring
Default keybindings are pretty bad though. And you have to switch to keyboard from controlled in the menu settings first thing you you'll get stuck (menus will open asking if you want to confirm changes and you can't close them or accept the changes, even if you don't have a controlled connected it will expect controller input to confirm/reject changes).

There is no reason why the procrastinators on Steam should be giving this mixed reviews.
It runs like dogshit and is unplayable on PC, not to mention it's a shitty PC port when it comes to controls, settings, etc. (which I was willing to forgive since 99% of games these days are awful and apparently this one is good), what do you recommend giving it? I only have a 6900xt, 5800X, 32GB RAM, and installed it on a samsung 980 pro 1TB nvme SSD. I guess I could upgrade to a 3090TI when that comes out. I'll throw it into a 64 core rig if you think my CPU is the problem.

Beat Margit last night as a straight up melee with no summons/spirits. Jesus, that was hard. I'm going to have to put more stock into at least using spirit summons from now on >< and if I hadn't beaten him last night, I was going to do that for his fight anyway. Also it's weird, but I feel like there is a bit more input delay on the dodge in this game versus previous Fromsoft games. Am I crazy? I just played Sekiro a few months ago and thought it was super responsive, and DS3 before that as well.

Game is super fun though despite some of the problems -- I have been rando-transported to areas far away revealing just how large the map is looking like it will be. Pretty nuts. Also, fighting large bosses on Torrent feels so awesome.

Oh! There is a problem that I am having that may just be a "me" problem -- having the left analog stick L3 or whatever activate crouch makes me accidentally crouch constantly in stressful situations. Like I will be riding a direction and accidentally press too hard and crouch, inevitably getting me hit/killed/dismounting Torrent. This happened to me a lot in Sekiro, too, and I had just forgotten. Is this a problem with my controller? I'm using an XBone controller. I'm tempted to just get an Elite controller and map crouch to one of the flappy fingers on the back of it, but those things are pricey.

are keyboard controls FULLY customizable?...meaning are any actions/keys hard coded where you can't change them?

Movement seems to be very dependent on equipment load- it's more than just "fat roll" from previous DS games. Even being at the low end of "medium load" seems to behave differently than at the high end (right before you get into "heavy"). I struggled with the Erdtree Avatar for about an hour before figuring out that I should unequip my (useless for my strategy) shield and I rolled much faster.

The controller is expensive, but if you play a decent amount of games with a controller I believe it's worth it. You get up to four actions to map to the rear paddles, and I've never liked "stick click" in any control scheme. That said, the "stick click" mechanism is generally supposed to be possible with the stick in the neutral position, but it's possible to brute force press the entire mechanism down to activate it. I just tested it on an Elite (v2) vs a standard XB1, and the Elite has a bit nicer materials so this might be mitigated.

Somebody else mentioned to me that the equip load has to do with it also, so I'll try lowering it next time I am able to play. Kind of a bummer, since I'd like to be able to play with medium-heavy armor, but the way it is now even with a medium load I can't reliably dodge on reaction. On some bosses it hasn't been a big deal, but on Margit it was pretty rough.

And I'll consider the controller -- it's about 50/50 whether I am using a controller for a game, but the ones I use it for tend to be longer RPG/Adventure/Action titles.

Yeah, I went Samurai build and immediately noticed that even though I was still in 'medium-load' that when I altered some pieces and equipped better shields that it greatly hindered my agility. Although in most situations I find having the better medium shield pays dividends. The light shields, IMO, are completely useless, not even worth the weight. A medium shield with 100 physical blocking is worth it though. I can't even imagine a good scenario for the light shields, unless you become god-like at parrying. They seem useless otherwise.

I prefer controller 100%. I use my Xbox one controller and the only minor issue I've had is from when I'm circle strafing on my mount every once in a while I will accidentally push down too hard on the joystick which will auto dismount you. That can lead to bad things when you are kiting a boss.

Vs old DS games...it's much easier to retrieve your souls (esp in the open world) because of the speed of the horse. In dungeons it can be a mixed bag but that's why you play legacy dungeons more carefully, when you are about to engage something for the first time, make sure to be aware of your surroundings and put yourself in a place to where if you die it won't be exceedingly hard to get back to that exact spot to retrieve your souls. Also once you get a bit further, it becomes much easier to farm souls and so losing them isn't so bad. Plus the fact that this game has TONS of grace points, so always spend souls the second you have the ability to level up.

Same problem. Joystick is just sensitive. I dismount ALL the time and it drives me nuts, but controller is still far superior to KB+M

Good call on the elite though, I may have to do that too. I want to rebind but there's no other buttons I can rebind it too. Dismounting during a horseback boss battle is mega fail.

There's also a lot of runes just laying around, period. I've got so many stacked up in my inventory, so whenever i'm about to do something dangerous I just consume a few so I can zero out with a level.

Exactly why I like this game. Plus the fact that it's so big and new that there aren't full guides yet that tell you exactly what to do and when to do it, I hate looking at those. I went so far off the rails of the "story" on my own path and it was incredible (until I hit a wall where I couldn't progress). Being able to do your own thing is the best part of this game. I love going to places where I have no business being and finding ways to beat bosses I have no business fighting at that point in the game.

Coolest aspect of this game is just discovering new monsters that you just know are going to wreck your shit. I teleported to this one area, and standing 10 feet in front of me was this awful looking giant bird fucker man.. I teleported back home FAST.

Stayed up til 4AM last night trying to wrap my head around how to beat this double boss. Even tried with (3) players to no avail. I hate that you can't just straight up TEXT chat in this game. Trying to run a strat that's 2v1 on 1 boss while the 3rd person kites the 2nd boss until the 1st is dead.

it's dx12 so any of the modes will work fine with Gsync (do NOT turn on "fullscreen and windowed" EVER these days, leave it on fullscreen only. that setting is utterly pointless as of windows 10 build 1803 which came out aloooong time ago
Just an addtional not thatHDR only works in exclusive fullscreen.
how on earth can someone tell 'within a few minutes' if a huge open world game like Elden Ring is overhyped?...sounds like you already had your mind made up before launching the game
It took me something like 2 hours just to reach the first encampment outside Stormgate. I spent a lot of time getting used to the game's mechanics before trying to make any progress. And as mentioned, the map is gigantic. There is absolutely no way to make a judgement on this game in just 30 minutes.
Well...my shit is back to fucking stuttering like crazy after this morning patch. From Software can get fucked at this point.
Noticed this, as well. The game was working fine until I booted it up on Saturday and now I'm experiencing stuttering again. It's not so bad that it's hindering my enjoyment of the game, but it's annoying nonetheless. Makes me think From has no idea what they need to do to address the performance issues at this time.
I ran past that guy too.

My first boss was a weird statue in some catacombs. Margit was my second. I haven’t found a third yet.
The gargoyle in that early dungeon has definitely been one of the more interesting bosses I've come across thus far. The others are standard Soulsborne fare, but the gargoyle really threw me for a loop with how it moves and how it attacks at warp speed. I hope there are more bosses like that in the game.
I just spent 5 hours attempting Margit over and over again. Even with co-op partners it's ridiculous. They always die by the second phase. Do I need a ranged weapon or something? There is no damn opening for a melee attack in that second phase.
Utilize the spirit ashes that you get. They're good at distracting the boss. The wolves and imps are good picks. The imps are from a starting gift. The imps are good to take as a starting gift because they can actually effectively damage bosses. One of my attempts on Margit had them do some kind of tandem attack that took away half his HP.
Woah really? I've been confusing AI for human this whole time? Face palm... Why would it even show a "summoning cooperator" message for an AI, including a slight wait for them to appear... Shouldn't they just spawn instantly?
You will know if a summon is an AI because you won't see other player summon signs without using the necessary items you get early on. The Furcalling Finger Remedy is what makes player summon signs show up. It's a consumable, but you can make basically an infinite number of them from the Erdleaf Flowers you find everywhere. On why they don't show up immediately, that has always been a Soulsborne thing. I think it is just to avoid making a completely different summoning system just for the AI.

In my experience thus far I believe that the bosses were designed with having the player use spirit ashes in mind based on the aggressiveness and attack patterns. I know people are going to think this makes the game "easy mode," but it really doesn't. Keeping with Margit the boss is smart enough to not let you keep whacking him indiscriminately. If you get lazy he will punish you, but in general he will prioritize vanquishing your spirits. In his second phase I noticed he tends to use his leaping hammer attack a lot to kill your spirits quickly before refocusing attention on you.

I am also with you on the dodge delay. I don't thing input is necessarily delayed, but the iframes are. I feel you don't actually get iframes until your character is in the rolling animation, which takes a few frames to get to after pushing the button. That means you need to anticipate attacks more. Agility may affect your iframes like adaptability did in Dark Souls 2.

What is the summoning class?
There is no summoning class. If you're referring to spirit ashes, you get a bell to use them if you go back to the church in the opening area of the game after you get the whistle that summons Torrent (your horse). There is an NPC sitting on the wall near the Grace fragment that will call for your attention.

What is the summoning class?
There is no 'summoning' class. You just need enough FP to summon whatever thing you're wanting to summon.

And yeah, I don't get the aversion to not wanting to use ash summons. It would be like choosing not to use golden seeds, not using those tear's to upgrade the flasks, or not slotting one of those elden things you get after defeating a boss & unlocking it.

Honestly, Ash summons make the most sense on Melee builds as it is since you aren't using FP for much anyways during boss fights as a melee build.

I have a problem with this game...

...can't stop playing it. My kids are getting pissed because I stopped playing the games I was playing with them. My wife, while not pissed, has given me some eye-rolls in the last few days.

Performance is decent, but I'm playing it on my living room TV (on PC) and I may have left the TV's smoothing on :D I get the bigger loading (at least they feel like loading) hitches moving long distances, but in between those, everything is smooth as silk. Now I'm afraid to try it on another machine. :D The game is slow enough that I'm not noticing any input lag with the TV, so I guess I'm good. Funny thing is, I didn't realize that Breath of the Wild didn't run at 60FPS until after I almost beat it, because of my TV's smoothing. I'm sure if I played a more demanding and technical game, I'd notice the latency. I've turned the smoothing off to play SHMUPs, platformers, etc. for example. I never notice while I'm playing slower paced 3D adventure/RPG games at all though. The TV is whatever the popular Costco LG 87" model was about two years ago. Can't remember the model off the top of my head.

I did get kicked off the TV for a while yesterday, so I used Steam streaming to my Macbook, and played while people were watching TV. :D Still looked good there for the most part too, but maybe it got smoothed out a bit in the streaming process or something. Who knows...

The game is fun as hell, and so far, I'm enjoying it more than DS3 which I also liked. (didn't play 1 or 2, so no comment there)

I farmed a bit early on up to maybe level 15, and then off I went. I didn't go through the first castle yet, so I probably need to go back there to advance much, but I've been clearing out forts, caves, encampments, some kind of convoy, a swamp area, etc. Having a blast!

Edit: Incidentally, I'm using a PS5 Dualsense pad on both the PC, and when streaming to the Macbook, and I have to say it's an excellent way to play this. (someone asked about controllers upthread)

I was curious about the general thoughts of summoning as well. I do use them, as it makes sense with a melee build. However, after enough "sprays" my jellyfish can eventually poison the bosses I've encountered so far. Which means I can basically guard/dodge as I watch the bosses health bar slowly decline. I just have to hit the boss every once and while so that it doesn't focus and kill the jellyfish before it can inflict poison. It feels sorta cheesy, but then again it would be the same as not upgrading the flasks as you mentioned.

It's been a long time since I was this engrossed in a game...maybe Ghosts of Tsushima. I am playing on PS5 and have not notice any stutters or frame drops. However, I usually don't. I am up to 25 hours playtime (Started Friday morning) and like others was up until 4am this morning. Glad I took the day off! At the end of this game I know I will remember these words "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened"

Curious about this one but scared off due to poor port news. Is this accurate?
60fps locked
no ultrawide
stutter galore
no modding due to anti-cheat, so no hope of community fixing

Did I miss anything? The 60fps cap bugs me the most.

  • All From games have been locked to 60 FPS on PC, with the exception of Prepare to Die Edition locked to 30 FPS.
  • Dark Souls: Remastered was the first game to support 21:9 resolution, but it was developed by a different studio. Elden Ring at least properly pillarboxes the game if you choose an ultrawidescreen resolution.
  • I would not call it a "galore," but there is occasional stuttering. Experience will vary by user.
  • If you want to play online, no. You can disable EAC to run mods, though.

These are from 1.2, 1.02.1’s patch notes are:

• Mouse operation improved.
• Reduced number of files needed to load when entering a new area.

there was an additional fix in that patch:

-Start-up issues related to Easy Anti Cheat (EAC) have been improved

60fps lock on this game is like banging a 10/10 chick but you have to be in the pitch black dark.

Can't say I've noticed. I still have to restart my PC every time I want to play the game. It otherwise sits on a black screen.

Ok, I’ve played another few hours and am starting to get stuck in. Once you get past the non-traditional control and UI layouts, and you've figured out how to efficiently down enemies, the game really opens up. I'm decided: it's a superb game.

Also, I'm experiencing none of the issues on PC save a some few and far between e.g. every half hour or so, stutters (runing a 5800 @4.6ghz and a 3080 ti)
