I have 4K euros of components getting the dust because there is no DDR5 in the entire europe.

My "refund window" is expired and I can't even ask for a refund.

Shops here says that there will be no DDR5 for months, a lot of months.
I have spent a lot of money for the components and I will not be able to use them for months.

Intel will never see my money again.
This is the last time I buy an Intel CPU, no matter how good they will be in the future.

this is not an intel problem, this is a supply problem of very new tech.
Let's say you bought an AMD setup requiring DDR5, would you then come here and spout that you would never buy an AMD CPU again?

Speaking of significance, this nag it is insignificant.
No one told to throw 4K out of the window, at two years Covid-19 times, along chip shortages times.
All car factories minimized cars production to 50%.
Start using your TV set, so to watch the news like every one else.

AMD doesn't sold me something I can't buy.

Back when AMD's 5 series CPU's came out, I bought a mobo, ram, cooler, etc... and couldn't get a CPU at retail price. Had to wait almost 2 months to get a CPU, a 5800X, and took another 3 months to get the CPU I wanted, a 5900X.
I had parts sitting around for a few month and I wasn't blaming AMD, I was blaming the scalpers for buying up all the crap with their bots.

Look on eBay and see if they are scalping DDR5?

I can tell you that the "shops" can't accurately tell you anything about supply chains and shipments. There is DDR5 out there right now, it's just being snatched up by asshole scalpers. That being said, as others have pointed out this isn't an Intel problem. Intel doesn't control DDR5 production. You are also the one who bought a DDR5 motherboard.

I've actually done the same thing. I have an $1,100 DDR5 motherboard and 12900K I can't use. That's just the way it goes sometimes. You are building in a shortage. Patience is something you have to learn if you are going to do that.

If Windows stopped allowing you to install the browser of your choice, would you never use Windows again? (sorry, I know, offtopic)

I just bought a DDR4 motherboard and reused my old memory. Problem solved.
To be fair, the best motherboards for Alder Lake are DDR5 boards. I wouldn't say that buying a lower end Z690 and DDR4 RAM is "problem solved." There is nothing wrong with that option, but it's not necessarily what everyone wants to do. I certainly wouldn't. I understand the OP's frustration, I just think he's being unreasonable and unrealistic with his blame against Intel. I will also say its easier for me to be more patient as my existing machine is no slouch. If you are running an older system its more frustrating but people who tend to buy new technologies and deal with the whole "early adopter" thing are likely to be more like me in that they'll have a decent machine already that they can continue using.

To be even fairer, you're talking about a different league of motherboard than most people. Not many people are going to drop $1100 on a motherboard like you did and not many people make money off reviewing motherboards like you do. Your definition of "lower end" is probably different than most. I don't feel like the Asus Strix Z690-A D4 I bought is that much different than a regular mainstream DDR5 board other than the use of DDR4 memory. Many reviews have put the differences at slim to non-existent between DDR4/DDR5.

I do symphathize. I'm not in the computer parts business, but could see how a tech change that creates a non-moving inventory due to supply could be a huge issue.

And while I hear the "can't blame Intel for that"... knowing Intel of old and how they manipulated supply in the past, they are probably more responsible than people realize.

From a performance standpoint, the DDR4/DDR5 difference isn't really the argument. It's not even necessarily an overall or overclocking performance difference either. While higher end boards are technically better overclockers the difference for most people will never be seen. You'd have to run some sort of phase change or LN2 setup to see those differences most of the time. On regular consumer boards the differences I've seen in overclocking from the lower end to the high end are often as little as 100MHz if anything.

Most aspects of system performance come down to the CPU and GPU's and the motherboard has little to do with it. What you are really paying for are features more than anything. More M.2 slots, better UEFI, (there is more granular voltage control on higher end boards). better network, audio and that sort of thing. You also get onboard power and reset controls as well as additional SATA ports, a Thunderbolt header, and so on. Ultra-high end boards also give you newer features that haven't hit the mainstream yet such as right angled power connectors. You naturally get more RGB and fancy heatsinks with these boards as well.

You pay a lot for aesthetics which don't matter to everyone, but do matter to more people than you'd think. There has been a lot of research on this by the motherboard makers. There is a reason why most cases have windows, most motherboards have black / gray or certain color schemes and RGB LED's all over them. Again, all things that cost extra.

I think if Intel could, Intel would improve the DDR5 situation as it would help sell more of their products.

Sell or return your ddr5 mb. Go buy a ddr4 mb. Problem solved.

This would be the best option right now -- DDR4 is pretty easy to get and is affordable. If you are able to return or resell your DDR5 motherboard, just try and get one that supports DDR4 RAM instead.

It's a bit late to say this but when I saw the prices for DDR5 RAM, the Alder Lake motherboards etc. I decided I wouldn't have been interested. So maybe when a new platform comes out it's an idea to check things out before ordering.

This is the clear solution. Especially given the fact there are very, very few applications where DDR5 actually matters.

Also, not sure what this has to do at all with Intel given you can use DDR4.

I saw the title and was honestly expecting a post about a defective CPU or chipset. I echo the sentiments of others that Intel did not cause this issue. High demand, supply chain issues, scalpers and the like caused this issue. You can wait a couple months to discover if the supply issue improves or use a DDR4 motherboard as a stop gap. Even Dan currently has trouble purchasing a set of DDR5 memory for his own rig. I am glad that I decided to wait as much as I wanted the best.

I'm having trouble getting DDR5 memory kits for reviews. Anytime I have trouble getting hardware samples, its because supply is shit.

If anything, Intel and motherboard makers are the victims of the memory suppliers failing to uphold their end of the bargain.

Do you realize how many specialized and unique parts a motherboard maker has to acquire to produce a high end board? And yet those are all readily available for purchase.

But a single stupid power management chip is now holding up everything. Did nobody order these in time? Is there only one company in the world making them? Why isnt someone else producing them? Why couldn’t some other fab make them right now - indeed, why aren’t the memory producers themselves making these chips if they’re so crucial to their product and yet so unobtainable? Are they THAT highly advanced and unusual that nobody has the capability? Really doesn’t seem likely.

There’s no way Intel is going to meet the sales goals of their new platform. There’s no way motherboard makers are going to meet their own goals, especially since apparently no one was informed of the shortage so they all shot themselves in the foot by not producing even one high-end DDR4 model.

How many CPUs and DDR5 motherboards (which we have been able to buy) are going to be returned because of this? That hurts those companies and all the retailers who sold them in the first place.

It’s just a royal mess all around.

I even start the wonder… why have I and continue to see advertisements and promotions and press releases for DDR5 products? Who the heck are they trying to attract to their vaporware product?

Don’t worry, it’ll get much worse. China will forcibly take over Taiwan and nobody will do anything about it.
PSA: China would like to take this time to remind everyone that Taiwan is under their complete control. (Don't need the FB fact checkers to invade)

I have a DDR4 board as well, and have no regrets going that route. When DDR5 becomes more available then I'll switch, but probably not until the next gen comes along.

It plays out like this... Russia invades Ukraine, massively useless economic sanctions are put on the two people in Russia who are currently unsanctioned. China sees this and says well damn, Taiwan, all your base are belong to us. Much hot air is expelled. Maybe even a couple missiles launched. Everything settles down and we have cold war on drugs for next 50 years

Except for the money... Critical puzzle piece.

Sucker. Who didn't see ddr5 shortages and scalping happening.

Just sell ddr5 board and buy ddr4 board like stated earlier.

By the looks of things I will be using my 4790k rig till 2023 or 24 waiting for good ddr5 ram anyways.

P.S. your not likely to find any sympathy here.

That's a lot Euros. what the heck you buy lol? Also if you just dropped 4k like that why not just buy some DDR5 from ebay if it's that important to you?

Half of it could just be the GPU.

I have no empathy at all for intel, they could cease to exist and I'd be just fine... However, your problem is 0% intels fault. Learn how this works, and dont make the same mistake again (and not buying intel CPU's wont fix your problem).
