3080 tuf repairs

I have a 3080 tuf that is giving me fits. The card had been working fine for months with the exception of the ram getting hot. I don't think that is really a problem with this actual card...just the 3080 itself.

So, I decided to install a Bykski full cover waterblock on the card. I got everything dissembled and put back together with all new pads. I even used Gelid pads for the ram. So good so far. Then I put it on my machine and started to work it, everything was working well. Temps stayed cool. Then I upped the ram OC and pffft. Nothing. Brought the clocks back down and nothing. Tried to reboot the machine and nothing so long as that card was installed. Shimmied another machine over close to the tubes and got it to boot with the GPU installed as a secondary GPU. GPU-Z didn't even really recognize the card; told me it had the same ram is the primary, sometimes it said it was a 3080, sometimes it was unknown. It really depended on the boot. So I sat it for a few days to work on my other problems.

Then, I got the standard heatsink and fan system back out and mounted it back on to make it a bit more portable to other systems. Nothing looked out of place on the card as I took the waterblock off. Put the card back into my system as the primary card, fired it up and worked great. GPU-Z showed me a Asus with GDDR6X ram, etc. Next morning it won't boot as a primary card.

I contacted ASUS and they told me I have no warranty (second hand). I sent it in anyway. Yesterday they came back with the fee to fix it...only $1100. Sorry, $1100 is more than the MSRP of the stinking card. What is with that?! re there other options?

Can you ask the seller to assist you with the warranty replacement? Also never tell the manufacturer that it's purchased second hand. Them them you received it as a gift. They have to provide you warranty service by law in that case.

Actually by law they can require you to show proof of purchase. This is almost always the case in the US. Other countries may be different.

Yeah, I tried to contact him, but no dice. The card actually came out of a prebuilt and has an Asian SN, so I'm doubly screwed.

Asus are renowned for being shady bastards when it comes to rma, just sounds like they want to sell you a pre gouged card with no attempt at repair of the other card.

That's a good price for the repair on a RTX 3080.... I'd have them "repair" it.

Yea sadly it sounds like it.

There are other third party tech companies that fix gpu’s.
If you or anyone knows of some reputable places, I'd appreciate it.

Ok, so is it a good price or is it shady? Seems shady, but I have zero experience.
Are the gelid pads super firm?
Yes. Not only that, when I put the stock cooler back on, I was able to preserve all the stock pads in great shape.

It's possible that the pads are too firm, you may have damaged the memory (ball grid array underneath). So you may be able to get someone to check and repair or remove and resolder the memory on.

No idea of the msrp or what they're currently going for but it seems over the top.

I'm going to say It's close to the current manufacturer msrp. Seems like alot to fix it, but... what can you do (besides just not buying one).

I'd probably ask if they were just going to send you a new card that comes with warranty, lol. If so I'd probably pull the trigger (I'd have to factor how long, etc). If not, I'd tell them to ship it back.

If you bought by credit card on ebay or something, you can always file a chargeback. If something breaks that's always an option. That said, this seems to have had issues after you modified the device rather than through normal usage so...you decide where your ethics lie there.

GPUs are usually fairly easy to fix but hard to find the right people. There are some youtube channels doing board repairs maybe contact them and see if you can get a quote.

If you have no luck either try to sell it broken or send it off to China for repair. There are a lot more repair options over there, may need a friend who speaks Chinese to help you navigate however.

MSRP no longer matters. ASUS + MSI has been charging much higher prices (to their distributors) than what they did back in late 2020, or selling them to their distribution channel in "forced" bundles (gigabyte seems to do this more). This is a major part of why you see Newegg shuffle having forced bundles. For all we know, that might be the price Asus is actually selling these cards to newegg. Given current condition, if you can verify that the replacement card has warranty, I'd say go for it.

Some 3080 have low prices because older contracts. I am sure it's one reason nvidia and AOBs is pushing for 3080 Ti and 3090 Super because then it's a new set of prices (to AOBs and distributors -> retailers)

I barely have any friends that speak English....
I did call Northridgefix as I'd seen them mentioned on here on other threads....they said they were too busy to take on any new customers. That really sucks as I have another card, an RX 580 that is also busted that needs repairing or trashing.

I got a 3060ti bundle with an exploding PSU from a newegg shuffle. Pretty awesome, eh? Asus said I'd get like a 60 day warranty on the repair. Yippie. But yeah, I've noticed prices of the things going up all over the place...that 3060ti was like $400. It seems like the MSRP of the V2/LHR cards is considerably higher than the old ones.

Bending over and paying is probably the thing to do, but just want to be at peace with my a$$ r@ping.

If you cant get a reasonably priced repair, there's always the ebay option:

These things BROKEN still sell for more than they would have brand new at MSRP.

Yesterday I thought it looked like a different card...heatsink looked slightly different. I found the old serial number and compared it and it is in fact a different card.

My old card was a version one card and this one also is a version one card.

Consider yourself lucky it's a Rev 1. If it's a Rev. 1 (non-LHR) card, and all you care about is gaming, I'd sell it for a premium and get a better LHR card. Or you could sell the non-LHR, get the same LHR card and pocket the different.

I just sold my non-LHR 3080, bought a better AIB 3080 Ti AND walked away with $100 in profit.

How do you tell if its a LHR card or not? My 3070 is pretty "old" and I'm pretty sure I bought it before LHR cards were even a thing. I don't mine but I'd like to take a swing at an AMD card so it might be worth it to sell.

You may be able to tell by model number. However, if the purchase date is early 2021 or before it is pretty much guaranteed to be non-LHR.

If it's Rev 1.0, it's generally sure to be non-LHR. Unless Asus is somehow able to retrospectively change earlier cards to LHR, but a) I don't think this is easily possible from my understanding, and b) highly doubt Asus is going to the effort of changing their refurb stock.

You could likely sell it and get a 6800xt as a near 1:1 cost trade. Being able to do this has been a big win for gamers who fought to get cards early. I would have never splurged on a 3080 Ti had I not been able to sell for more than it cost.

I looked it up, my EVGA card ends in a -KR not an -LR so it should not be an LHR card.

That is literally a slap in the face, im genuinely insulted for you. Shame on ASUS for charging $1100 to "fix" a $700 card, especially since they apparently just sent you a different one anyway, instead of fixing yours.

My experience with ASUS RMA has always been amazing, though I havent dealt with them in years, is this how they are now? I may have to completely stop recommending all ASUS products now based on this one experience.

It is NOT a $700. The MSRP is over $1000 at this point for the tuf. I am not defending Asus here since they did him dirty. Stories like this has taken Asus off my list of consideration when buying PC parts.

Is this the card OP has?

I didnt see a link in his OP, so I mistakenly assumed "reference design". Either way, even at a $1000 MSRP this is definitely an example of ASUS at their worst, unless every single component on the PCB is bad (includiong the PCB itself) it shouldnt cost more to fix than it did to completely build in the first place. Im with you on not considering ASUS parts anymore, which sucks because that only leaves me ASRock for my motherboard choice, though I do really like ASRock.

I don't believe NE had stock if the 3089 tuf for a while so that is a old price. MC is pricing them at $1050. Asus boards were my go too for awhile but I took a chance with a gigabyte x570 master last. Eventho I had zero issues with it I have also removed gigabyte from my list for all the BS they have been pulling. I never had good experiences with MSi boards so idk what company I would go with in the future. Evga has done good so they will likely always get my GPU business.

Ive been anti-gigabyte for a while, the last board that I considered of theirs was of the LGA775 generation, though I do have a lot of respect for them for being the last to switch over to the god awful modern EFI layout. As I recall they were the only manufacturer to offer a true BIOS like experience for LGA1155, the last time that was offered. MSI is the same as gigabyte to me, which is the same is biostar/foxconn/tyan, essentially the worst of the worst. Love their GPUs though.

I've had very mixed experience with ASUS RMA. I think the way they run this process and treat customers (based on my direct experience) is one of the real negatives with ASUS. There are many positives also, of course.

Well, I bent over and paid....thanks to all for giving me some peace or something.............

Got it back yesterday actually. It seems to be working....well, for about a whole day now.

Couple of questions for ya,

How much did you end up paying when all was said and done?
How long did it take to get the card back after you mailed it in? (wasn't quite sure on the exact days based on your post history in this thread.)

Then maybe the more personal question, would you spend that much on a second hand gpu again, or will you bite the bullet and either wait, or pay more to have better piece of mind in the future? I always know in the back of my head that I purchased my 3090 tuf without any opportunity to get the original receipt and would be in the same boat as you.

It creates quite the psychological paradigm in the USA; when you have enough money to pay for something you want, but are unable to get despite efforts that go beyond a reasonable amount of effort in acquiring this item. While yes there is a price point that eventually anyone 'could' have purchased a 3xxx series on ebay for, that becomes more of a moral and philosophical question. How bad do you want a gpu - bad enough to break your personal morals in order to obtain it? This is where we veer into the nebulous realm of addiction, and why you can see governments like China taking sweeping measures to attempt a more substantial intervention dealing with adolescent videogame addiction. Especially in a 'communist' society where without the drone worker bees, economic structure falls apart.

I know this is a very personal response, even though I'm not applegrcoug . For me, peace of mind includes being able to tell my SO that I kept to within my original budget. We don't keep secrets from each other, so she will find out eventually.

Yes, I do have the money, in principle, but I'm sure that there is a "red line" beyond which a lot of us won't pay to get a GPU. But I'm not clear why you mention addiction.

While I have zero love for the Chinese Communist party, (but lots of contempt) I'm not sure how your sentences about the "government" in China taking action (really the Party), how does that tie into the rest of the paragraph. I am NOT trolling here, but genuinely interested in learning more, since I also follow world events.

I think it was about ten days or so from when I mailed it off and then got it back. Cost was just under $1100, which included sales tax.

I don't know if I'd spend that much again or not...not like buying it off ebay would have done things much different. Heck, one of the scalpers on Amazon maybe be the same way because they aren't a certified retailer. Not only that, those folks were charging like an extra $1000 over a private party sale anyway. And for what? Asus would still have invalidated the warranty. Sure, I'd rather buy it from Amazon...but you need one of the better bots available to get something from Amazon. Best Buy and Newegg you just need luck.

I'd probably have bitten the bullet and had them fix/replace it for $1100 given the current state of the market. I've landed a couple of Ampere cards at reasonable prices, but it's a pain in the ass or just takes dumb luck. First one I went hunting for and ended up with an EVGA 3090 XC3 because that's what I managed to get into my cart and check out with last December. Landed it on BestBuy.com after striking out on amd.com on 6900XT launch day. At the time I felt like I spent too much, but now I'm glad I bought it. A 3090 seemed like too much money for the games I play at the time but aggravation also counts and if I hadn't done it who knows how long I would have had to wait and hunt for a 3080, 6800XT or 6900XT. Second one was basically a Newegg shuffle fluke last month. No idea how I got picked for a no combo EVGA 3060Ti XC the first time I entered the shuffle. I probably should have scalped the 3060Ti but nah, I kept it and put it in my old/backup rig.

Oddly enough, I won a shuffle for a 3060ti/psu combo my second day entering.
