Official PS5 Thread

I'm not touching it. They said touching it does nothing. I have it open while I'm doing other things. Zero expectations.

I think a number of these companies need to get their act together because this has been going on long before COVID. Covid just made it worse. I understand people see an opportunity and take it with bots and flipping stuff... I get that... but I still think it's crap.
Aaaand they're already out of stock with ~30 minutes remaining in the queue.

A follow up.
I noticed in those screenshots that it’s sending Atmos via TrueHD. I know my soundbar accepts Atmos via TrueHD (I think that’s the preferred method). Perhaps you’ve got a setting amiss somewhere.

This may seem like a dumb question but does your receiver actually support Atmos and do you have the proper setup for it?

I’m not trying to play on your intelligence or offend you at all but I do realize that lots of console owners aren’t necessarily tech nerds. Since we all don’t know each other I reckon it’s a fair question.

No offense taken. Yeah, it definitely can. It's a Denon S730H. Atmos works fine with my PC and streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+. The output is clearly displayed as Atmos. DolbyHD doesn't support the same type of positional audio as Atmos, so I'd question if what's being output is actually correctly doing that, too.

Guys, guys, guys! I got in...
But it's sold out, lol. I get to browse the website tho, cool...

Yup. Same here. No expectations. (shrugs) I keep saying it: Nvidia, Sony, Microsoft, whoever... you all want my business? Make your products available... and do something to minimize the gouging and the BS while you're at it.

Yeah, there are 2 ways to pass Atmos through:

Dolby TrueHD - Lossless only supported via eARC and from discs (Set to Linear PCM for this)
Dolby Digial Plus - Lossy (Set PS5 to Bitstream Dolby)

Companies can only produce so much. They need to get things out before the holidays. Doesn't help when you see scalpers with 20 PS5 they brought. It is very common nowadays and into the foreseeable future. You really think this something new? Other industries have been dealing with scalpers for ever but their sights have locked on to the PC market.

My Apple TV 4K sends it as Dolby MAT.

Hopefully you can figure out what’s going on with your setup then. I’m pretty sure my Xbox One sends it as TrueHD so I see no reason I’d have any issues with the PS5. The Xbox one is so slow and it stutters audio forever until it gets playing for a few minutes. I hate using it as a player but I don’t have anything else.

I don’t own a ton of Blu-ray’s at all. I just bought the Game of Thrones UHD release and am waiting on the Lord of the Rings trilogy set. Wanted to see if physical is still worth the cost. I haven’t played physical media in years.

Nope, I know it's nothing new. Just tiresome.

For me physical media is all I want. I don't know about the GoT UHD, I own the first 4 seasons on regular BR, but am having a hard time convincing myself to spend $200 to get it all in UHD 4k, but it is supposedly Dolby Vision so it might be really good picture quality wise. But if your set supports Dolby Vision and you have an Atmos HT setup, it is very much better than anything streaming that I have seen. I am still a bit ticked off at Disney. They gave HDR10 versions of the original Star Wars trilogy, but on Disney+ it's Dolby Vision supposedly. To my eyes, though HDR10 is good, Dolby Vision is better when it comes to picture quality.

As far as the PS5 goes, I think it passes Atmos data tracks but it won't decode it if you have to send the data stream to your receiver as PCM. So if you set the PS5 to bitstream then your receiver will handle the decoding of the data, but if you set it to PCM then the PS5 will decode it but then you won't get the atmos stuff encoded in the disc.

The Game of Thrones UHD release does indeed offer Dolby Vision as well as Atmos. I actually prefer HDR10 over Dolby Vision but I appreciate what (DV) tries to do better. I find Vision better at night but HDR10 better for daytime watching.

That being said, the UHD release is fantastic. I watched a few episodes and it’s worlds better than the HBO on demand I originally watched. I intend on rewatching the entire series to see what I missed via compression and it looks like the PS5 will do what I need it to do.

The HBO stream was garbage. The night scene in the final sseason provide it.

Well today is exciting and nerve wracking at the same time. Both my PS5 and XSX are out for delivery, my xsx is pickup from Walmart so I'm not worried about that but my PS5 is coming Canada post and they are fucking terrible in my area and love to mis-deliver my packages and mail.

Hopefully by tonight my man cave will be rocking both :)

edit: Wife just called to say it arrived just fine and is now sitting my living room :D Just waiting for Walmart to email me for pickup on my xbox now

Target shipped my PS5 in a giant box that was 3X the size of the system box. It looked like I ordered a mini-fridge or a microwave. They left it on my porch (luckily) without needing to request that, too. FedEx is infamous for ringing my doorbell, leaving a tag, and hauling ass away so they don't actually have to lift a large box.

Ahh that might explain things. I don't usually watch anything when the sun is still up. Man, you are tempting me to get GoT now ... must resist.... :)

If you're in the queue you're already dead. Trick is not to be in it - I gave instructions in the PS5 HotDeals thread. Add a game or accessory or 1 month of PS Plus to cart and pre-enter all your CC info and then refresh that throughout day to keep session alive. Also if you've already endured the queue once for that session, you should be immune to being placed into it again. The queue thing is nothing more than Sony trying to do website crowd/traffic control. It doesn't mean there's a stock drop imminent, it just means site traffic has reached a threshold and it automatically kicks in.

Above all, everyone needs to relax - you'll get one.

Went home for lunch and got to stare at my new boxes lol. Stopped off and picked up the xsx on my way home so now they are both waiting for setup and inspection

If you pop in a PS4 game disc, does it download PS4 game patches or only patches that were designed for PS5 enhancements?

I keep reading about people with The Last Guardian saying the game plays locked 60FPS because the 30 fps patch isn't included on the disc..

I assume that you can play disk games without downloading patches if you are offline?

I know I saw that digital foundry did this with AC Unity, because the retail disk had an unlocked framerate. I do not recall if it was for the PS5 or Series X, however.

My honest opinion on the PS5 after the weekend:
  • The games look and run great - looks next gen. Enjoying the hell out of DS and Spider-Man.
  • The controller, especially the adaptive triggers when implemented well, feels very next gen. The controller is amazing.
But...the console itself could use some work.
  • I’ve had 2 soft crashes; 1 in SM Miles Morales and 1 in DS. I had 1 hard crash during DS. This is over the span of 4 days, maybe 12 hours total played.
  • The console is so quiet from a fan perspective that you now hear the coil whine/buzz. I’ve been able to listen to four PS5s (2 of mine, 1 coworkers, 1 friends) and they all exhibit it to the same degree. To many people this doesn’t bother them at all but to others, such as myself, it’s more annoying than a louder fan (which I’d prefer).

Looks like the new consoles won't fit in your entertainment center, hah. Or did you plan to sit them on top and keep the old Xbone and PS4 in their spots? I like that they have their respective LED colors and hope you can turn them down/off easily too.

Yeah, pretty sure DF mentioned on their live stream the other night that you can play unpatched games right off the disk, which is a nice perk for them when they want to test/play games that initially had unlocked framerates like AC Unity did on the disc version. They also liked that you can easily switch between PS4 and PS5 versions of games, which you can't do on Xbox with its Smart Delivery, because so far some games (like Bugsnax) run faster/smoother on the PS4 versions. Ideally you would never have to do that or choose between versions, but I guess it's still nice to have the option if that's the case.

So getting one is still proving to be a goddamned shitfest. I had DPI's method setup on the PS Direct store but they've recoded to the queue system so you CANNOT add to cart before getting shoved into the queue. I'm not even sure how it works now but it seems (based on reading thousands of posts in the nowinstock page) that auto refreshers won't actually get you into the queue on time, and I had alerts from all the popular places set up, too.

Crazy.

You need to already have something in your cart and refreshing the page hours before the queue starts, not try to add something AFTER the queue starts. And then keep an Auto Refresher refreshing the Review Order page (where you re-enter your CVC info) - this *should* keep the session alive and prevent you from being added to a new queue. I'd hang in there for the rest of the day with Distill pointed at both the disc and digital editions. I wouldn't even waste brain cycles looking at Nowinstock - its only useful for finding out when something is already OUT of stock, plus clueless people chatting.

Here's what I did:

- At 5:45am, started Distill checking for "out of stock" to change on the PS store page every 10 seconds

- had a tab open with physical game in my cart with all information filled out, just shy of "review order" (every 30 minutes or so I'd refresh and make sure I was still logged in, not timed out etc.)

- waited, manually watching much of the time but obviously like 99.99% of people I can't literally sit and watch a webpage for 8 hours continuously

- while I was browsing elsewhere, I got the alert from Distill, the tab that opened was ALREADY in the queue. this was at ~1:20 cst. thus there is no point in the other tab with the cart because you don't have it in the cart.
*others got in the queue around 1:05 cst so for some reason the auto refreshers are not guaranteed to work.

I know you're going to say "but if you see the queue, you already lost" it DOESN'T work that way now, the add to cart never appears for anyone until you've gone through the queue process. that's how it works now. the trick is getting into the queue early enough.

^ Yep I'm aware they changed the queue mechanics since I wrote those instructions a couple days ago - you used to be able to hit ESC during page load to escape the queue and his Add To Cart, whereas now it's tracked server-side.

So you certainly did everything right, and the breakdown seems to have been your store session (and in-cart item) timing out since, yes, it's absurd to watch for 8hrs continuously. I'm experimenting to verify 100% if a page auto-refresher (I'm not talking about Distill) will keep the store session with your in-cart item alive or not.

Don't sweat it - I would lay money that you'll score a PS5 this week.

cool. 👍also I just setup Hotstock on my phone, but I don't have faith in those alerts getting to me fast enough. it's something at least.

Yeah the app looked a little wonky to me initially, but having used it just for comparison sake, it was actually lightning fast - like 2-3 seconds - for the PS Direct drops last week. I de-selected all other stores and left only PS Direct since that store is the only shot anyone has without a $3000+ bot.

Ok, I'll do the same. Question about that Keep Alive app - do I add a rule from the PS cart page, or just direct.playstation.com or what? And thanks, you kick ass.

edit: also, I've heard that there is FAR less stock availability for the digital edition console, do you know if that's true? That's what I'd prefer to get but if my chances are that much better for the disk one, I'll change my plans.

There's only speculation since Sony hasn't announced any physical numbers, but it doesn't matter - grab whatever you can at this point, it'll be worth more than you paid for the next 6 months. Disc version will also hold its value better in terms of resale.

I keep getting a "server did not return 200" error every few minutes using that keep-alive plugin, pointed to direct.playstation.com

Any idea how it needs to be configured? I noticed when that error from the plugin popped up, Distill also errored a few seconds later.

still get this after a few minutes even with Session Alive setup with a foreground reload rule with the tab kept open... how the heck can we automate staying active?

So my PS4 Pro launch model (CUH-7015B) has a 100Mb LAN port or the port is F'd because I don't think it ever connected at 1Gb. I did connect it to 5GHz wireless, but that dropped at some point and stopped the transfer. Gonna take 10+ hours to transfer ~500GB because it's maxing out the 100Mb NIC. Only disc-based game I have is Days Gone, so I'm letting that install. Should probably start taking bets on if the PS4 transfer will flip out once it finds out I decided to install Days Gone from disc before it could get to it. Just glad the PS5 has a functioning 1Gb NIC, but I'll be surprised if downloads from Sony are actually fast; I've never had speedy downloads from Sony/MS/Nintendo.

Days Gone runs super smooth, it's like playing on a PC. :D

PS4 pro has gigabit ethernet.

Its probably taking that long because its decrypting everything off a 5,000 rpm platter drive and then re-encrypting it onto the PS5.

A small facepalm about PS5 which I just became aware of in the past couple of days: no VRR support at this time.

Yeah, I was a bit annoyed that that too. But at this point it wouldn't matter much since most (if not all) games are still locked to 30/60/120 FPS anyways with very few dips. VRR will make a huge difference in games where the frame rate is unlocked. Which will give console game devs a lot more breathing room to on their IQ/performance budgets on games going forward since they don't have to lock to 60/120 FPS at all times. I hope they leverage VRR a lot more as this console cycle matures, but so far they're hardly acknowledging it exists unfortunately.

I just got shipping notice from Amazon my ps5 be here tomorrow. I pre-order it as soon as it poped up originally.

Mine doesn't do 1Gb wired, I've plugged it into a separate switch and directly into a Netgear router and it always negotiates 100Mbps; I've hard set the port on the Netgear to 1Gb and the PS4 then refuses to connect on it and I've plugged it directly into the switch and router (instead of the wall jack) with various cables. It also has a 1TB SSD. Plugged my PS5 into the same cable and network jack, 1Gbps. My PS4Pro apparently has issues.

the whole ps4 platform sucked balls for downloads, it was always shocking to me how god awful slow downloads were on my ps4 slim compared to my stock xbox one and pc. The ps5 though? Fucking amazing, I set 5 games to download and over the next 2 hours was bombarded by notifications that games were ready, way way faster than the ps4 ever was.
