So, I had a major fuckup. While cleaning up my PC room to prepare for future job improvements (working from home instead of at office)
I fucked up.

Knocked a cup over, cup went into the top of my case, fans at the top of the case, Radeon 5700 below it...well...the rest is history. It sprayed
everywhere and nuked everything. Not even gonna try and salvage shit, its bad, like 30 oz of liquid in everything bad.

Here's where I'm looking to move to:

3900X
Motherboard - TBD, x570 or B550, ASrock is my brand of choice, been using them for a few builds, love their boards
32GB memory
5700 to replace my dead one
750W Gold / Platinum PSU - Seasonic or EVGA possibly, also no issues personally with Thermaltake
Phantek Enthoo ProM TG (Tempered Glass Black Model)

All the new bells and whistles are kinda not really a need for me. I have 4 x SATA SSD's and I was gonna grab a large-ish spinner for archive uses.
So any board seems to fit my need. A single PCI 4.0 slot is plenty, I'm not gonna be running anything super high end as far as SSD's.

I don't plan on OC'ing much, if at all. System stability is far more valuable to me than eeking out the extra few % of anything.

What CPU cooler would you recommend for a 3900x? I've never water cooled anything, so not sure if I'm comfy with the integrated watercooling CPU
coolers.

Any other thoughts on what might be beneficial for this build? I haven't been in the AMD camp since the 5x86 days. But $ for $, I just can't justify Intel this
cycle.

Things I need it for: Basic Office stuff, nothing fancy here, Teams, PowerApps, Power Automate, I can do all this stuff without question.
I run 2 x Windows 10 VM's one for my Admin credentials to keep that isolated, and another as my imaging platform and to test out new things before I push them
to the team. Both those are Workstation 15.5 VM's when I use them both they use about 12GB of ram, no big deal, as I don't run them while doing heavy tasks.

Gaming: I play COD:MW and WOW to pass the time. They worked just fine with the 5820k and 5700 I see no reason that they won't work just as well based on what
#'s I looking at, only game @ 1080 @ 144hz, so not pushing the boundaries there at all.

The real question mark also is B550 or X570. Don't consider price here really, would like to stay reasonable, and I see that the x570 market is starved right now so prices
are insane. Either platform will give me the ability to expand to the next CPU architecture when its available, so that plays into things nicely for me.
What benefits does x570 have over B550 in my situation as noted above. Is there any? Would high end B550 be comparable to low end x570 if we were comparing $ to $.

Thanks for your input Red Teamers, I been a AMD graphics fan for a LONG time, but the CPU's were just not on my radar, so, its time for some change, and its time to consult
those that been there :)

What are your heavy apps?

There really isn't anything outside of what I detailed there. The 32GB might be overkill, but its what I came from, so to stay within the range of what I worked with previously.
I've always been a build to the longevity. The system in my sig was 6 ish years old and while I was planning on swapping the CPU and board etc soon anyway, it worked for what I
used it for without any complaint.

I actually think you'd be better served with a 3800x or 3700x and saving some money.

Fair enough, in reviewing synthetic benchmarks, they seem rather consistent for most workloads.

Well the 3700x is a great chip for the money, it's not going to be as much of a power hog or have the same power/cooling demands as a 3900x, and if it's going to do everything you need, spend the extra on a nice case to build it in, nicer motherboard, nicer power supply, or heck invest it elsewhere. If you absolutely must have the 3900x, get it, but I'd save the money unless you have a need for the extra 4 cores. With 8 cores you're already getting 2 newer faster cores than you have currently.

If you want a flashy cooler for it, you could put the money in that too. A corsair or NXZT 280mm aio would be nice?

Take note that some B550s, same as some B450s, while they do have 6 SATA ports, will disable some upon the use of M.2 drives, like this board for example (see text at very bottom re: disabling of SATA5/6). Either that, or it will cut the GPU PCIE lanes into half (will allocated x8 to the GPU, and split the remaining x4s to the M.2s) like the B550 Aorus Master.
You don't get that "problem" on X570s.

3900X - go with the stock fan, it's "hot" for a stock cooler (but which stock coolers run cool?) but it does the job as long as you set a fan curve to rein in the sound profile.

RAM - I'd recommend going with Crucial 3600 CAS 16 RAM (new 'Ballistix' Line?)- these are well priced RAM that has minimum compatibility issues with Ryzen and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Yeah ..maybe save on the CPU and run a 3700x .. and then spend a little more on 2 x 16GB 3600mhz CAS14-16 stuff. Stock cooler for the 3700x is decent.

I run a Noctua NH-D15 dual fan setup on my 3700x/ASRock x570 Steel Legend/2 x 16 HyperX Predator 3200mhz CAS16 @ 3800 CAS18 1:1 IF/ASRock 5700xt Blower style/'EVGA GQ 850wtt 80+ Gold .. I've been happy with it. I have an older 144hz 1ms ASUS 24" monitor and use VSR to run at 1440p with my games.

Pretty much my direction at this point.

So far I have the case. Phanteks Enthoo TG series
And I snatched up a x570 Asus Prime-P for the board.

I wasnt looking for a super high end board and its color scheme fit my goal with that also.

I have a complete set of the Razer Stormstroopers items that been in boxes untouched along with an Anne Pro keyboard. So gonna take advantage of those components and whip together a little style.

Been a long time since I did a mod...but well. I miss my roots 👍🏻

System is together, did minor tweaking to get the memory inline at 3200 speeds, but otherwise, its cookin with gas.

I have the R5700 still and I might have saved it. I didn't see any scorched spots from the damage, so I dropped it into the system and it powered up.
The funny part was, I grabbed a monitor I thought was good, and saw all these screen artifacts. Was like well, its jacked up. Unboxed the 5700xt, put it in.
same thing. I was like wtf. Come to find out, gf's son got pissy and punched the screen and broke it. So, when I moved the system to the actual monitor its going on
all looked good.

Doing cable cleanup work and finishing all the extra device hookup stuff (like front USB panel etc) this coming weekend, and mounting the 3rd and 4th SSD's into the case properly.

But overall, super super pleased. It was painful as shit not having a gaming PC for what 5-6 weeks
But I'm glad with the results at this point.

Was going to second the recommendation of the 3700x, seems like the sweet spot CPU as far as most work loads and it's only 65W TDP. Seems you got it all together now though, glad you are enjoying!! Luckily you figured it out before you tossed the 5700, lol.

So, what was the final build?

Nice thing about the Ryzen chips is they run cooler than their intel counterpart, can get away with just air cooling and not loud AIOs

3700x with 32GB, 5700XT, Phantek case all strapped to the Asus x570-P (non pro). I got the 5700xt off Ebay / Newegg refurb, but it was brand new in box, even had the gigabyte security stickers still sealed. So. All in all, I dropped about $1400. If I woulda tested the 5700 further, I mighta saved 350 on that. But its done, and thats the important part.

Now, I'm looking at that 5700 and thinking of making a m-itx box around it for work ;)

Yeah, I saw your comment on my ITX issues, lol. I love the small box, but of course it comes with limits.
