First, is a msi 1070 8gb gaming X worth $200 on the used market? I found one for sale locally.

There is so much stuff in the 150-200 range.
There is a deal on dell for the 5500xt 4gb reference no external power for 150, or the 8gb for $180, now I hearing issues with those depending on the motherboard. (ASRock b450m/ac)
Then there is all the 1650 supers.
This will be going in a R5 2600x with a B450. So the 1070 seems to be almost Overkill but it is older tech.

So please throw out some ideas please.

The 1070 wouldn't be overkill. I tend to lean towards Nvidia, but I don't have any knowledge on the all the bloody 16xx releases nor the 5500's.

Does the $200 price seem good? Not a mining card it was a streamers card

They are firm on the price, That is why i am looking at alternatives / newer tech. but holy crap between all the different 1650's and 1660's and the 5500xt and 580's there seems to be about 20 different models numbers in that 150-220 price range. then when you read benchmarks and it seems in 90% of the games even the newer ones the 1070 usually beats all of them, until you get to the $240+ range 1660 super that is out of budget. getting tired of looking at benchmarks lol. it is gross in the low midrange market.

I'm sure that you could find a $175 1070 if you look around. In the forums here, I've seen them go for as little as $150 and several sub $180. I had my FE listed for $175 shipped and no one bit :p.

Unless you need it ASAP then you're kind of stuck looking local.

He has to reach 100 first! kirby is right though I sold one not too long ago for 180.

I've seen 1070s go for as low as 250 CAD in my area. But most are closer to 300-325 unfortunately. Online is where you'll find the fairest prices

gtx 1070's on eBay sell for $200 or less (shipped) so if you want to hand the seller an extra $30 go right ahead but personally, if a local sale I'd make an offer

You can often find 980ti cards for <$200 these days, that is still one hell of a card.

If you are looking at 1070 level performance... the cheapest 1660 super you can buy is your ticket. If you must go well under 200 just get the cheapest 5500 xt 4gb and change it again someday. The 8gb version of the 5500 xt wont buy you anything. But the 1660 super is the card you want on a 3600x.

Thanks, I am going to wait for a good deal on a 1660 super, its just such a big jump up in fps for not much more than a 5500xt or 1650super, and a whole lot more efficient than a 1070

Actually, the 1650 Super is the same performance as the RX 5500 - for $20 less! The cheaest rx 5500 is $179, while the GTX 1650 Super starts at $159.

Either this or 1660 Super is a much better value than AMD at that $230-or-less price point.

Or get an rx580 for ~$100 and save the money.

The 150-200 market has been shit for years.

1070 is probably the best but yeah it’s getting to be an old card. I picked up a Vega 64 here for 200 That could be an alternative but it hasn’t been completely problem free with drivers and I’m still dealing with potential power problems

OP, I agree with your selection of the 1660 Super. That's the right answer in your price range, especially if you prefer the greater power efficiency of the newer card over the 1070 (which also makes an impact in reduced cooling requirements as well).

If you take a quick look on sold ebay listings $200 isn't unreasonable. I would call $185 a good deal, but there are still plenty of 1070s going well above 200.
