Hello what would be the best gpu upgrade from a 1070? I was thinking about a 5700, but should I be looking at other options?

27 inch 1080p 60 hz monitor and 24 inch 60hz monitor is what I game on with semi new titles
Thanks :)

And what games are you having trouble with using a 1070 on a 1080p 60 hertz monitor? And apparently you have not looked at reviews or you would know that a 5700 is not much of an upgrade at all. Techpowerup shows basically a 20% improvement at 1080p and that's with a top of the line CPU and very fast memory so depending on the rest of your specs you might not even see that full 20%.

Yeah, pretty much looking at the 5700 or 2060 Super at that price range. I'm partial to the 2060 though if just for RT and DLSS support in some games makes quite a difference and despite what some say the 2060 can definitely perform well with RT on in most games, esp. at 1080p. Hell, I just saw this DF video yesterday of the 2060S running Wolfenstein Youngblood running it nearly maxed out at 4k with RT and DLSS on at 60+ FPS and it looks just as good as the native 4K image. I know that game wasn't too well received by most and it's only one game, but you can expect that same performance in the next Doom Eternal game too since it's the same Engine probably. Then hopefully more games keep coming out with as good DLSS support.

So it depends on what games you play or plan on playing as well. Depending on your luck too, you can flash a 5700 to an XT and get some additional performance, but it's not guaranteed and it may just cause instability depending on if you won the GPU bin lottery or not.

Even if the rx 5700 performs closer to a gtx 1080, I'd still hold out till a price drop if your budget is around 350 and this is especially true if your gaming @ 1080p 60hz. I personally would try to save that money for an upgrade that will net you above 30 percent increase in performance. IMO the 5700 is a great upgrade path for those below the gtx 1070 and the 5700xt for those with current performance around the gtx 1070.

That Being said the 5700xt might be a bit overkill for a while since i think you should be able to play most games with the gtx 1070 @ 60fps/1080p. Personally I think your sitting pretty well with the gtx 1070, but if you ever think about upgrading to 90hz+, then an upgrade would make more sense, that, or wait a bit for more demanding games to come out, whichever comes first.

Hopefully with any upgrade you do , your cpu wont bottle neck too much.

Agreed, the 1070 is a terrific 1080p 60hz card still.

Red dead redemption 2. Your assumption about me not looking at reviews is wrong. I thought that reselling my old card and spending roughly $130 for a 20 percent improvement was a good deal. My mistake.

One of my family has a pc with a 1070, it has a solid OC of around 2050mhz. I benched RDR2 on it out of curosity, it can only run max settings / 1080p around 40 fps (+/-). For comparison, the overclocked 1080ti in my loop does around 60fps at 1080p maxed.

I think 5700xt is around the performance of the 1080ti in most games, better in some (RDR2 and AMD optimized titles), slightly worse in others. I wouldn't go with a card any slower than that if you are looking for a meaningful upgrade.

imo, my 2ndary pc has a 5700XT and that thing blew me away. Just as fast and sometimes FASTER then the Radeon VII that it replaced. Couldnt believe it. MC it on sale for 329 a few weeks ago. It was a twin fan powercolor model. Excellent purchase.

You're going to need at least at least a 2070 Super or 5700 XT to see an upgrade over a 1070.

The 5700 is only 30% faster than the 1070 at 1080p (Techpowerup review from this last week):

The 2070 Super is 55% faster, and the 5700 XT is 45% faster.

At 4k, the 5700 XT is 55% faster, and the 2070 Super is 70% faster, so that's the future performance you will see from this upgrade. The 5700 is still under 40% performance improvement (nopt really worth it, unless you like buying a new graphics card every year.).

These guys are giving good advice. There isn't a really good 1070/1080 upgrade in the $350 range. The only way you are going to get good value for your dollar is to wait for the next gen of Nvidia cards and see how much performance uplift we get.

Plus, at that point at least you will gain from the newer architecture of the cards in general because after x number of years new games simply run "better" on more current hardware in general.

But if you aren't willing to go to at least a 2070 super, just stop your desire to spend money right now and wait. There's nothing worth it.

I'm in the same boat with a Rx580 8gb card a ryzen 3600x and a 1080p 144hz monitor. I want to upgrade but at the moment it's not worth it unless I get a crazy deal on a used card. I have $300 right now and I'm gonna keep saving and wait for the nvidia 3000 series. We should get way better performance with it being the second gen of ray tracing and we have the consoles coming out this year so I feel like the newer cards have to be a decent improvement over the current gen rtx cards. The current rtx cards were over priced and didn't perform as good as they should have for the price they asked for them
Hopefully we get a big performance increase next gen and maybe lower prices

I guess. In your case a 1660 super would be $250... but only a 30% improvement. The next best choice, a 2060 super is $400 and a full $100 over your budget. So yeah if your budget is $300 you're stuck unless you can sell the RX 580 for $100 and then put $150 into getting 30% more perf.

The RX 580 is a far older architecture yet so there is slightly more justification in doing that in your case.

Then again, the RX 580 is still considered a solid performing card at 1080p.

If you are trying to game at 1440, I'd sell and switch. But in the OPs case, the 1070 is already decent at higher resolutions and settings.

And the rest of the specs matter too because if you have some older 4-core CPU then you're not going to see the benefits of a much faster card at 1080p. Imo anyone buying a 5700 or faster should have a 6 core 12 thread CPU or better at this point going forward.

Keep your 1070 and your money for the next upgrade cycle. I would just leave it if I were gaming at 1080p/60Hz.

I upgraded from FX 8350 system to ryzen 5 (for when new games will need a faster GPU upgrade) but still using my gtx 970 and I can run all my latest games (metro exodus, anthem, etx) at 60 fps 1080p @ 60Hz

It's been said that unless you go to a higher res/Hz upgrading will be a waste of $$$

Its not horrible but what many are saying is true, that the upgrade is not really worth it if your resolution is 1080p/60hz. My advice would be to try tweaking RDR2 settings. It is a Rockstar game, optimization is sub par, game is buggy and well, it will run better in 2-3 years when everyone can just brute force it via better hardware like has happened with GTA5.

Check out Hardware Unboxed's video on optimizing settings to improve performance: (14mins in)

You are certainly not running the latest games on max settings and getting 60fps with a 970. You also claimed in another thread to be able to overclock your 970 higher after upgrading to the ryzen CPU which makes zero sense.

Unless you can find a 1080ti for about $350 (which is possible, but lucky) I wouldn't bother.
At 1080p, the 1070 should more than suffice. Unless you're going for super, super high refresh rates.

If you flash a 5700, that's the best bang for the buck you can get in the ballpark you're looking at. You're not unlocking shaders or doing anything crazy, all you're doing is unlocking the power limits to be more like the XT. You get within 2-3% of an XT (see charts above, etc.) for $70 less.

5700XT is gamers nexus best all around gpu of 2019. if i didn't already own a 980ti that's what i'd get. you can also look on ebay at used cards. GTX 1080's are going for ~300 right now last time i checked. a hair better than a 980ti

980ti's are nice too. you can normally get a 45-50% overclock out of them. one of the best overclocking cards ever.

LOL you can't even come remotely close to getting a 45 to 50% overclock on any modern GPU. You're probably one of those people that looks at the base clock as a starting point which is wrong. The baseline is the actual in-game boost that you're getting out of the box not any of the advertised clocks. Even the founders Edition 980 TI had an average actual boost of just over 1,200 and those could typically overclock to just under 1450 so about 20%.

Well if the rest of his system was shit upgrading to a modern platform can help GPU overclocking.

Hell no it can't. A better CPU will help to increase performance in 1080p and 1440p and lower (as far as you are not gpu limited), but no way will it increase GPU overclocking.

I said a better platform. That can include a better power supply and or a better motherboard which can deliver more stable voltages to GPU or better cooling or airflow which lowers case and thus GPU temps which are beneficial for overclocking. The FX 8350 was a hot and thirsty pig.

If it's for 1080p you have plenty options, even under your bucket, a GTX 1070 sounds perfect but even a GTX 1060 or a RX 590 would work fine.

I have a 1060 6gb, and I would not ever recommend it for modern 1080p gaming. I struggle to get 60fps on modern titles unless they're heavily optimized or older titles. In fact i'm in the same boat as OP - looking for an upgrade, and i'm presently torn between the 5600 XT, the 2060 KO, or if I want to step it up to a 5700 non-xt model.

Iunno. I rock a 1060 and a 3600. Runs everything just fine. COD runs mint. World of Warcraft I'm run at 160 FPS at all times. Farcry 5 at maxed graphics. Perhaps those games aren't modern enough? No idea. Been almost a year now and have zero reason to want to replace this 1060.

Maybe it's my 8320. But I played Black Mesa Xen, and it was kinda sucky at times at ~45fps. Civ 6 plays at 45ish FPS in the late game. I can't play Stellaris as it pays at like 30 fps when I zoom out. I guess it's just the games I like playing... GTA 5 played like crap at times. I'll be building my 3600 rig in April soon. So idk, we'll see. I'll likely buy a new card before then.

That 8320 is weak as hell. That's your problem. Once you get a 3600 you'll be in much better shape.

I thought games like Civ and Stellaris were more CPU limited games. Either way you may also be on the edge of a cpu bottleneck too, yes with just a 1060.
