Is there any way to permanently disable win 10 update? I own a tablet and ive tried disabling it thru services but it somehow gets around that!

Pretty sure you can't permanently disable it on Home/Pro editions. Only Workstation/Enterprise can fully disable it.

As far as I'm aware, the only edition of Windows 10 that supports this is the LTSC branch. But even then, I don't think you can push off updates forever. Eventually you'll be forced to update because the version you're on will no longer received any patches at all.

Even if you do manage to disable it, Microsoft force the download to your desktop for you to install.

You can easily disable any edition Windows 10 auto updates & other until you choose otherwise by using the WAU Manager (free) app.

See Brinks" #303 post here:

See "Option" #7 for turning off Windows 10 updates using the WAU Manager app here:

Download "WAU Manager" (current version 2.2.0.0 from official website - File size: 682.55 KB) & apply:

I don't like forced updates either, but with the ability to delay them for 30 days is a good compromise with the pro version. I think it's foolish not to update your OS, and it's probably why MS finally decided to make them mandatory to avoid spreading malware and viruses.

Its idiotic to want to disable free updates.

...and it's pretty lame responding to someone's legitimate question, purely to label them an idiot, without having any information at all on why they have asked that question in the first place.

Disabling updates is pretty trivial.

Group Policy changes - as referenced by Pendragon1 are a good start.
Baycee has mentioned a 3rd party tool that I'm not familiar with - that might be worth a look.
In short - group policy settings, service configuration and registry changes will completely disable Windows updates - beyond that, I can't really be bothered detailing the exact steps, as it seems like this thread is full of people who want to make negative or unhelpful comments, rather than actually answering the question.

...so much for a "support" forum.
Why bother making judgements about someone's question ?
Who gives a damn if you agree with their question or not - either provide some information - or politely keep your opinions to yourself.

...one very logical reason for not using updates are unintended results of patches to the OS and its components.
Why do people think businesses have patching schedules at all ? Based on comments in this thread, we should all just suck it up, apply patches without a second thought and everything will be great.

And I really couldn't care less if you agree with that position or not.

Consider the value of your posts or replies - rather than just venting your opinion - as from what I can see there are three useful responses in this thread prior to mine - out of 9 - i.e. 2/3's of the comments are irrelevant, useless and have no value whatsoever.

The reason why is everytime I do an update it somehow screws up something on my NuVision TM800W560L Signature Edition Windows 10 8" tablet. I think the new updates screw up the drivers on the tablet causing things to not work, only way to fix it is recovery and go back to previous version before update. Last time I updated my WiFi stopped working, battery would drain super fast, other times blue tooth, or my sound wouldn't work, touch screen stopped responding etc. As muz_j pointed out sometimes updates screw more up than they fix If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it...Also the updates take up so much space and the tablet is only 32gb windows is literally using it all. I only use it at work offline, rarely ever get online with it as I have a main desktop pc for that. Appreciate the help

I checked the first handful of messages and they were all incorrect.. so here is the method I use and it works even on my newest 1909 installs.

Open up services. (Open the run command and type services.msc). Find Windows Update, stop it. Open the properties and go to the logon tab and select the "This account:" toggle and enter Guest and just a made up password.

Now when windows tries to restart the services it will attempt to use a guest account that's likely disabled.

Best way to disable Win10 updates completely is to install some other OS on your tablet.

The primary problem is you only have 32GB of total space and that is not enough. Do as Auntjemima says and you will be fine. (Well, as fine as one can be with a device that is severely space constrained. I would almost suggest putting Linux on it if I thought that supported tablets properly but, not really the last time I tried it.

IIRC GP:s are now disabled in home versions.
This is a true statement. Kinda. GP's can still be implemented in a home version, but not easily. Access to gpedit is disabled, but it is possible because GP's are how certain tools like Anti-Beacon function. How they pull it off though, I'm not 100% certain.

Of course, if MS just made an updater that allowed advanced users the option of full control, none of this rubbish would be necessary.

This is the crux of most issues related to Windows.

If they made it so you could stay with a major version of 10 and still get security updates, gave the option to not include cortana on install, and had the Microsoft store be optional (along with apps), Windows 10 wouldn’t be that bad.

Basically a variant of Windows 10, like Windows 7. Sadly our capitalist overlords don't seem interested.

I still think Windows 2000 was the best version of Windows.

On the other hand one must understand why MS forces the updates on people. Many users are incredibly stupid. I've seen people who never turn off their computer and leave their work software running 24/7 just because they don't want to wait the 5 minutes in the morning that their bloatware filled craptop takes to boot. That sort of people would never perform the updates.

I don't turn my desktop off. But I run an OS that can update while I'm working, can update without reboots and can update in ~2 mins flat. This is one of those glaring issues regarding Windows - It's not that people don't want to update, it's that the process is an intolerable pain in the ass.

People may not like me saying that, but you can't escape the truth of the situation. Windows is showing it's age.

I had a similar issue with an old Toshiba tablet; gave up on ut.

No issue with HP Stream 7 tablet. Use Media Creation Tool to create Windows 10 on USB flash drive. Ran disk cleanup as administrator, charged tablet to 100%, connect a USB on the go cable, plug in USB flash drive, and rebooted. Let setup run. Just recently updated to 1909.

Yes, 32GB internal storage is a limitation. Updating to the semi annual releases used to fail due to space.

I thought about buying the tablet you mentioned.

Viper the hp tablet you mentioned only comes with 32gb as well and it's resolution is only 720p..The one thing my tablet has is 1920x1200 I don't think I've seen any other win 10 tablet for this price that's above 1080p..I am keeping my eye another tablet once this one is done with and I Def want 1080p minimum as I often use it to watch movies and retro game. But I always have a 64gb sd card on it so 32 gb is not a big deal for me. Also no point in updating if it stops so many things I actual use from working...

Honestly, why Windows? You can achieve this simply and easily under Android without the operating system space requirement overheads. You can even read directly off USB thumb drives, add additional storage using SD cards or connect to SMB shares for streaming.

Furthermore, an Android device would probably cost less than a Windows device with more storage and a beautiful 2560x1600 AMOLED display. This just sounds like a case of using the wrong tool for the job?

Have you looked at O&O's ShutUp10 to see if this would accomplish what you want? I have not used this, but it claims to "Control Windows Updates". I hope this helps.

Unfortunately no I tried disabling it thru services and it often starts up on its own! So annoying, no other windows has ever forced updates like 10..

Already thought of that mazz but the programs I use are windows only...

Fair enough, I just thought that considering the usage you mentioned an Android may provide a better experience for a better price. Obviously you do more than just watch movies and retro game and you get around the storage limitations using an SD card? Because you can retro game under Android.

Disabling the service won't work, as you've found it will just re enable itself. Furthermore, if you do manage to disable the updater completely it's not uncommon for Microsoft to force the update onto your desktop.

no because windows checks to see if it is running and will reenable it if it is not

Both wrong. Look for my post in this very thread. It tells you how to disable it without any software.

This is absolute fear mongering. The method I mentioned in this thread works 100% of the time. I am still on 15xxx and Microsoft has never pushed me a random update to my desktop as it cannot... As its service is disabled..

auntjemima I will try what you said with the guest account. Btw should I just delete the update files that windows has on my tablet currently? I hate deleting it bc as I said before if I delete it then windows downloads it in the background again!

You can use disk cleanup to do that.
