AMD or Intel for my new build?

Slowly but surely been getting back in to PC gaming and enthusiasm, I guess.

Just sold my i5-6600/RX570 setup local for a decent chunk of money so it’s gonna be time for a new build.

I do game somewhat (just CSGO and COD MW Remastered), also stream/download 4K video, a little photoshop, etc.

I’ve been with Intel for the last 10 years or so. My CPU budget is $150 or less, really prefer to be around $100-$120.

Looking at the Ryzen 3 1600, 2200, or an i5-9400F, but I want opinions. Will be going with an RX580 or a GTX 1060.
 
just grab ryzen 2600, or wait for 3000 series. (you can grab 2600 for $145)
2600 will really shine out on streaming, and higher workloads.


rx580 8g is better buy than 1060, but again navi is almost here so rx680 or something should be within same/similar price range and better performance.

If you are specifically looking for gaming only, you should consider taking intel. Note: all those security patches are slowing them down.
 
While intel is hurting due to the security patches, it still is faster for gaming...
 
Yeah I heard about the patches on a podcast I listen to lol.

So intel is better than AMD for gaming? Aside from just browsing the web and selling on eBay I mainly game.

For what you're looking at- not enough to matter. You'd need a significantly faster GPU and / or need to play more strenuous games to take advantage of higher single-core performance available on an Intel platform, and absent that need, a six-core Ryzen will bring more grunt for other work at that pricepoint.

Intel has patched some of the security issues in hardware in the 9xxx desktop series. Yes. intel still is better than AMD for gaming, doubly so if you plan to overclock
 
still rocking my 5820k :p i will cap my screen(144/165hz) on csgo before fps. the 2 extra cores i got when 4x8 was mainstream definately made my pc more future proof, it is from 2014.. maybe i could get some fps extra but for me at 1440p im within 1-5 fps or so vs new cpu's at that res compare to new games in most cases anyway. feels like components have way more lifetime then in my youth it felt as if it was obsolteted after 2 years almost back then. sacrifice high fps over longevity and lower max fps at 1080p, that is probably what it comes down to.
 
Resolution matters, framerate matters, games you play will decide what’s best.
Gpu is king, cpu is just a milestone you have to check off depending on your gpu and monitor.

CS, overwatch, Doom, etc arguably any recent 5ghz 4+core & anything 1070 or better will get you 144hz @1080p.
Blackout, Firestrike, Apex 180hz @1080/1440 any recent 6-8 core 1080ti/2080/2080ti isn’t unusual.....sucks for those of us with 27” 240hz monitors.

I’m mostly on an og X34, so 100hz.
I can get there with a R3 1200 3.7ghz and a 1070 playing Civ6 but the frame time sucks.
If it isn’t an FPS then not having a constant 95-99hz isn’t experience breaking.
I can use a 7820x 4.5ghz all 8 cores + 1080ti and play Witcher at 3440x1440 near the 100hz frame cap.
Same 7820x I can play BRs at 3440 at 100hz until someone gives me a reason to switch to my 240hz monitor bc I feel like owning them with a sniper until they quit out.

Situations dictate what box and monitor I get on.
If things get heated in chat, my framerate goes up, resolution goes down, I’ll light the kill feed up with my biggest build.
If I’m just chilling with single player games I get on the quiet low resource box that doesn’t drink power or make a ton of noise.
 
There is always a good time to wait, but if I was you I'd definitely wait now. :D

On 7/7, which is a little more than a month, you will be able to buy Zen2, aka Ryzen 3000 series, which will be better all around than anything Intel can offer at about the same price or a bit less, without security concerns to boot.

If all a person care about was gaming + a few small workloads without regard to gpu or monitor, 8600k or 2600 would be a safe bet.

If you played something single player that hammered CPU under 60fps then you upgrade it.

If you needed more than 144hz at 1080/1440p at low quality better than a 1070ti would be warranted.

I don't think most of us typically scrap an entire system until we're sniffing +30-50%. A jump in resolution or generation of games. And a lot of times you can get that with a video card upgrade.

Are you playing on a 4K monitor?

It's a pretty easy choice then as others have suggested. Ryzen 5 2600. You can get cheaper, but there's no better bang for the buck. I'd get the RX580 off of ebay, unless you want the games package. I got two back in November for $135 each.

Might as well wait until July though at this point. I'd sell you my rig but probably giving it to the kid (in july). (R5 2600/16GB/B450-F Gaming + GTX 1070)
 
For $120 you will not get anything good from intel, at best you will get something 6600K level at best without overclocking. It is a pretty easy answer then the R5 2600 is way better than anything you can get from intel in that price range.

OP needs to state what monitor he has, framerate he is targeting per game, or the monitor he wants to upgrade to.

I'm selling 64gb of my 128gb and my 7820x. I get downsizing if you aren't realistically using resources. I have plenty of room to downgrade and put the $ elsewhere. Arguably I can stick with 6-core Ryzen bc I know what I use a gen purpose gaming box won't benefit from 8-cores. I don't need HEDT, I just wanted to take it for a spin. OP is kinda just sidegrading with not Earth shattering uplift potential.

It would be difficult for any of us to think of how to rebuy your performance in games without a specific cited need or a bunch of data you collected using Afterburner to point to a component you absolutely should upgrade. We are bench racing here.

B450/2600 should be fine all around, unless the games you play hammer a clocked 8700k to death.

1070 should be fine for most resolutions unless you play ultra everything past 3440 and require more than 100hz. This all goes out the window if you end up playing a game that hammers a 1080ti like Witcher with hair fx on.
4k anything just don't bother bc there isn't anything I could think of that would make a 100+hz 4k display worthwhile.

I just pulled the trigger on the 9400F (Newegg had a promo for $139 plus I had a $10 gift card) and I’m in the market for an RX580. Probably gonna buy that used but the going rate on eBay is a little high so I’m scouring the forum here for one.

eh, that 9400f will be ok. I'm sure you'll be happy. Can be paired with an elcheapo mobo, cheap ddr4 and you're gtg. No oc'ing but u know that.

That said, people act like you can't game on AMD. At gaming resolution the difference in FPS is minimal and unless you are a pro gamer and ultra serious the 2600 Ryzen would have been a very good choice as well. Future upgrade path with Ryzen 2 etc....
 
I've had both the 2600 and the 9400F. It's like 6 of one, half dozen of the other. Neither one of them is a bad choice as long as you get them sub-$140 or so. I don't see the new Ryzen 3000 series coming in under $200 at launch anywhere for even the cheap CPU's, so $129 for a NIB 9400F was a pretty good deal.
 
I found it interesting that the x5660 at 4.2 Ghz on DDR 3 is just as fast in single tread as most of Gen 1 Ryzen on DDR 4 and not far from X models and this is all Windows 10 patches installed .

I have games I play in XFire and for the games that don't have a profile support for that game .. it will run only card 1 which is 8Gb lead card and 2nd card sleeps and still plays most anything 1080p Ultra , but with XFire the lead card could be a RX 580/590 8Gb and support is RX 570 4Gb .

My power needs are no more then when it was paired with a single 290x but performance scaled a lot like +10,000 gpu score for same amount of power .

Seems like waiting to see prices post Ryzen 3000 release is the no brainer here. I'd feel stupid buying anything in this category less than a month before release.
 
Any official date when the announced Intel price cuts takes place? I hope it also affects the "kf" models
 
I would try to get an 6 core. Whether you choose AMD or Intel, its up to you. The beautiful thing is, there are choices now.

I think a Ryzen 2600 makes a lot of sense, personally. 6 cores, 12 threads.

If you are streaming, I think you should be looking at Nvidia cards for NVENC encoding. The last two generations of Nvidia cards have really good encoding quality. Comparable to X.264 Faster, Fast, and Medium presets. And using your Nvidia card to do the encoding, affects framerates a lot less than using your CPU to encode.

That will also free up your CPU to do other things for your stream, such as overlays and picture in picture. Every extra thing you add, hits your CPU harder. Because its has to interrupt every single frame, to insert the overlays, etc.

the hit with multiple overlay elements doesn't seem that bad when it comes to OBS. For my stream I have multiple cameras, layers, text, etc...and with encoding using nvidia's nvenc 2 it's literally capping at 3% usage. Even when it was software, I only topped out at 5% usage when not encoding just for all the elements.

This doesn't take away from your point though, there is a little hit, just nothing super major.

the hit is going to be larger on a quad core. And that was my point.
 
socket 1151 is a dead stick it is being replaced by socket 1200 for the 14nm comet lake series.

1st gen am4 boards support r3k am4 support will go till am5 is released.
 
get a 3600x and a good am4 board im seriosuly considering a b450 asus board
