The ads he's referring to are things like popups for office 360. On the start screen they occasionally have links to an advertiser (linked in is the only one I've seen) or another reference to something from MS itself. I see the start screen one very rarely and I just don't see why I care. It's not like I look at the start screen for more than a few seconds (unless I really like the image and even then I only do it once).

Yeah but, I do not consider those as "ads". Otherwise, every single icon could be considered an ad for something that is on the desktop. However, if you were to see something like a Crest Toothpaste ad or Taco Bell ad, that would be something entirely different. Heck, I do not even see those things on the XBox One home screen.

Under Windows 10, a great many icons, aka: 'Active tiles' are advertising. The simple fact Microsoft try to convince the user to stick with Edge when changing default browsers is advertising that should never be accepted at OS level.

While you clearly don't care, some people such as myself want as little bloat in our o.s.es as possible. Bloat stacks and even small bits of bloat that you might nit actively see or notice can add up to a ton of bloat.

I wouldn't mind trying gaming on Linux if someone could tell me how to get my Creative Soundblaster AE-5 working on it. I hate onboard sound and don't want to use the Realtek soundcard if I can help it. Gaming and the occasional Office file that I have to open are the only reasons I stay on Windows (and the driver support).

That article came out in September. I think the last time I tried it was in August. I couldn't find any info anywhere and Creative shut down its forums. Thanks for this. I'll try it out sometime in January (Tweakguides is supposed to be releasing a Linux gaming guide then).

The ones on the lock screen (when they show up) are sometiems ads. As I said earlier I've definitely seen Linked In ads, but it's not a regular thing. Right now, I don't even have any links on the lock screen. Seems to happen when I apply an update.
