New(ish) to AMD, having issues with Freesync

The last AMD video card I owned was a 5850, so it's been some time since I've dealt with them. I have been running a G-Sync monitor for as long as they've been a thing, and that's kept me on team green. I recently picked up an ultra wide and decided it wasn't worth the extra cost for G-Sync support, so I went without. I regret that decision. Since my monitor supports Freesync, I decided I'd give AMD another shot and picked up a Vega 64. It's been problematic.

I seem to be stuck with two less than ideal options. Using DisplayPort, 3440x1440 at 100hz, I am having issues with Freesync enabled. I get a brightness flickering issue, which seems to be well documented. I'm having a second, far worse issue that I cannot find a single other source for. I'm getting an odd visual artifact, where the entire screen will flicker with what appears to be a blueish grid. The pattern almost reminds me of like a CPU die. It flashes very quickly, maybe 1/10th of a second, but it happens every 30 seconds or so. If I turn off Freesync, the issue goes away.

If I switch to HDMI, best I can tell, the issue goes away and Freesync works better, but over HDMI i'm limited to 60hz, which is also not ideal. I assume this is due to HDMI not being capable of 100hz at 3440x1440? If so, that makes getting DisplayPort working important.

Has anyone experienced, or heard of, the issue I'm having above? I don't know whether it's monitor, cable, or GPU related but as I don't own another AMD GPU, another Freesync monitor, or another DisplayPort cable, my options to troubleshoot are basically non-existent.

I run a Vega with a freesync monitor since last October with pretty much every driver since. No issues at all. Have you tried looking up the monitors firmware. What is the brand of the monitor ? Did the display port cable come with the monitor >?

I had flicker on my 4K FreeSync monitor and the issue was the cheap cable that came with it. Bought a good cable and the problem went away now going on 2 years.

It's a Monoprice Ultrawide... came with an HDMI cable. I believe the DP cable I'm using came from a ROG monitor. I'll pick up another one just in case that's the issue.

I would try a better cable as others have said, but when is this artifact happening? I have had a few games that absolutely did not want to work well with freesync and I would get similar artifacts. Does it happen all the time or only with a specific game?

All games. Doesnt happen on the desktop but as soon as I start up a game, the issue starts.

Is the flicker issue only in game, or does it do that when you're looking at the desktop too? I have a monoprice4k freesync with vega 64, and I have seen this flash you're talking about, but it almost completely went away when I set the refresh rate to 59hz. Not really a solution in your case, though.

Only happens in game, I haven't noticed it at all on the desktop.

Isn't it a 10 bit panel? Maybe try setting the refresh rate to 99hz, or just under 100. It's probably the firmware on the monitor though. Mine needs to be sent in for a firmware update (can't be done by user) that causes my hdr not to work over dp.

Monoprice doesn't actually say what the panel is, but many sources claim its the same panel as the Massdrop Vast, which is an 8-bit panel.

Ah. Did lowering the refresh rate help any? If not, you'll probably need to send it in. I just contacted monoprice to see if they can cross ship a replacement for mine. Hopefully they do that.

I didn't try yet. New cable is coming today and I'll play around with it more tonight and go from there.

What monitor?

Monoprice's 35" Ultrawide.

FWIW I tried another HDMI cable and nw 100hz over HDMI is working, but still getting the same issue with Freesync. Leaves me less hopeful that the DP cable coming today will do anything.

Maybe file a complaint RMA with monoprice. That is not a freesync characteristic. I had three HP Omen 32” monitors and freesync worked probably better than gsync IMO (when freesync actually worked like on my Fury X cards.) My Vega cards at launch and for three months after freesync never were consistent so I jumped ship to gsync. But gsync has its own issues. The biggest being that they don’t have a good, native driver way to control the upper FPS limit and gsync hitches when FPS goes above gsync range, while freesync does not.

I played around a bit this morning... over HDMI I can only set 100hz or 75hz. Will try DP after work, was hoping 99hz would be an option. At 75hz, Freesync appears to be working, and doesn't cause the issue, but I get very bad brightness flickering on the desktop. At 100hz, desktop is fine but Freesync issues come back in game. If the DP cable coming today doesn't do anything, I'll talk to Monoprice and see what they say.

I am assuming its your monitor. may be its overclocked out of the box and running out of spec. I strongly suspect that is probably the case. If it works fine at 75hz.

After playing more, it's not. It isn't as frequent but it does still happen all the way down to 60hz, and the new DP cable didn't change anything either.

I opened a ticket with Monoprice, we'll see what they say.

I sent my monoprice monitor back this Monday and will receive the replacement this following Monday. They are surprisingly quick with replacements.

I sent my back last week as well. They received it Monday, shipped a replacement Wednesday, and I got it yesterday. Unfortunately, it arrived with a cracked screen. I took that at as an omen that this monitor is just not meant to get along with me. I sent it back for a refund this time and bit the bullet on an LG 38" instead. That's coming tomorrow, so hopefully it arrives problem free. As it were, I purchased the Monoprice cheap because I wasn't sure how I'd feel about having an ultrawide. For the short time it was with me, I grew very fond of it. I don't mind spending the extra cash for a better display now that I'm more confident that I'll be happy with it.

That's too bad about the mp. If mine shows up broke I will probably ask for a refund too. Getting broken stuff is such a pita.

Thankfully, MP customer service is at least on the ball. I e-mailed them last night and about 9AM this morning I had a prepaid label. No questions asked, no fuss about me wanting to return it for a refund.

Well, the LG showed up yesterday. I think I'm a little bit glad I had problems with the Monoprice monitor. It was a good looking monitor, but holy shit is the LG a lot better. Between being bigger, higher resolution, and a decent IPS panel, it's just all around gorgeous. Oh, and Freesync works now too.

I got mine back and am thinking about sending it back too. It looks really good and there's no stuck pixels, but it's still doing weird things like yours did. Like random white specks on a solid black desktop. Did your HDR work? Because mine only seems to enable through hdmi, which doesn't support freesync. And to make matters worse, games detect it as an hdr display and i can't disable it (madden).

I'm honestly not even sure how HDR works on this monitor. Spec wise, it doesnt have any of the things HDR requires. Monoprice makes no mention of HDR anywhere, the first time I noticed it was on the front page of the manual.

When I used DP, it didn't identify as an HDR monitor. With HDMI, it did, and I could turn on HDR in the windows settings, but it made everything look terrible.

Yeah HDR is done manually in movies and games. The saturation you are seeing is because there is no specific HDR data.
If I enable HDR on my TV the backlight goes on full visual effects as light, dark and flames then come to life the signal makes use of the extra data thus allowing more light from the backlight to be displayed on the screen. The same goes for details in areas lit or dark the amount would not be possible if defined by the colouring artist which is what makes HDR seem so spectacular.

Don't misunderstand my comment for not knowing what HDR is ;). I primarily game on an LG OLED and HDR in games (well, movies too), when done well, can be jaw dropping. The Monoprice monitor, with HDR on... I don't even really know how to describe it. It doesn't look anything like what HDR should look like. It doesn't even look like working but poorly implemented HDR. It looks like the monitor allows HDR but has no idea what to do with the information and so it just pukes out whatever it can to make an image. Side note: there are two ways to enable "HDR" on this monitor. One was to use HDMI and enable HDR and WCG in windows, which is what provided the results I've just tried to describe. There is also an option in the monitors setting to enable some sort of fake HDR, and that just makes it look like the monitor cranks color saturation up to 11 and calls it a day. With this enabled, neither windows nor games recognize the display as HDR capable and therefore do not send and HDR signal to the monitor. Either way, I wasn't expecting HDR, and the Monoprice monitor did look pretty good for it's price point, so don't misunderstand that for a complaint. It is what it is.

Mine behaves similiarly. I wish it didn't accept an HDR signal at all, because windows and games act as if it's HDR and defaults to HDR On (in game). The option remains grayed out too. Still haven't decided if I will send it back or not.

Did you guys google or contact LG about this?

I don't think LG would have much to say about a Monoprice monitor

But no, I never mentioned the HDR oddities when dealing with Monoprice. It wasnt advertised as an HDR display and I wasnt expecting one. I just left it off and it didnt give me any trouble.

I certainly misread that part where I kept Oled TV in my mind where you were talking about something else and the LG is a monitor.

I am returning mine for a refund. This is the monitor I ordered to replace it. It's a rebadged AOC.

Nice I have this. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-C32H...e=UTF8&qid=1538362920&sr=1-1&keywords=c32hg70

the reviews on this are fairly old and Samsung has since update the monitor few times. The new freesync range is from 48-144hz. Also I tried another 32inch VA panel the quality was just not the same. This monitor is sharp and colors just pop, even at lower brightness it looks damn good. And with the latest firmware update this is butter smooth with freesync 2.

I spent another 100 on this monitor got it for 539.99 on sale at frys. I returned Pixio 32 inch monitor. Pixio 32 inch just did not look as good as Samsung, even at 2560*1440p the edges looked jagged around icons and colors were not that impressive. When I got the Samsung it just popped right away and sharpness was noticed right away.

Loving this monitor. I went from widescreen gsync to this monitor. I was tired of watching video content on 3440x1440p widescreen format lol. So I went down to this monitor and everything works great.

How do you like freesync 2? Is it noticeably better than freesync?

Love it. there are somethings that AMD made mandatory so the display makers aren't being lazy and slapping sticker on anything. We were seeing a lot of displays with low frequency range, not you get much better range and low frame rate compensation (LFC). Even when I say I dip below the lowest refresh rate of my monitor of 48hz I never get screen tearing or stutter because the monitor supports 3 times the lowest refresh rate. So each freesync 2 monitor must support atleast double range then lowest speed. Honestly Playing a game is a treat, shit is just so smooth lol!

I am tempted to get a Samsung 144 hz Freesync 2 monitor with quantum dot,1440p Hdr600. Gsync monitors are so ridiculous in price.
