No thread on this? Seriously!? Coming out in two weeks: 9/7/18

On topic, if anyone's got an extra reserved copy of the collector's edition, I'm buying. Sold out way too fast for me apparently.

I've tried not to get too hyped for it. It looks like a good translation of Arkham-style gameplay to the Spider-Man universe, with the open world freedom you would hope from such a game. But this year's E3 has me a little anxious about what they've done with the story and the possible tunneling in main story missions. I also did not like how the gameplay was interrupted far more often with cutscenes than the first reveal we saw last year.

Agreed, but overall, it honestly looks very quality. I'll reserve full judgement for two weeks from now though.

No doubt. Insomniac always manages to hit the mark with their Sony exclusives, but I'll keep my reservations until the game is out.

Game looks fantastic...but just not for me.

Just curious, is it because you're not a big Spiderman fan, or is it the game itself looks kinda 'meh' to you?

For me, it's just because I have no interest in Spiderman. He's just the generic superhero archetype to me and the constant "witty banter" grates on my nerves even in these short gameplay clips. But I'll admit the game itself looks extremely solid and well-made.

I like Spiderman which is why it baffles me. The Spiderman games on the PS2 were some of my favorite games that generation. But I just think the gameplay, while it looks fluid and well done, just doesn't interest me anymore.

This game looks really amazingly made, but the gameplay looks so ridiculously scripted and QTE-dense that it seems more like a slightly interactive movie than a game.

The only QTE heavy stuff they've shown is the cinematic stuff from the first trailer and a couple, story heavy, minutes in like a 10-15 minute gameplay demo. Even in the second example they say it's not as scripted as it looks, with the player able to take multiple paths to get to the scripted moments.

While true, it still points to a trend that they're sacrificing gameplay for those cinematic moments. I thought we were done trying to make video games like movies at this point. What really bothered me about this year's E3 demo was how often the player was interrupted, especially while they were chasing Electro.

BiH115 the video in your OP was removed, by the way.

RIP Insomniac.

She is the one who started the panic of virtual rape in GTA V and said the game should be banned from being sold anywhere. She has no substantive writing credits aside from advertorials on Politically Correct Gamer. And now she is a senior writer on a new video game project.

SO red when I sold my PS4 the Gamestop guy asked if I wanted to buy a Spiderman PS4 I said it's RED. Plus I was trying to sell my old PS4 at the same time duh.

RIP Insomniac.

And her actions had zero effect on GTA V's sales, so why do you care? It sounds like she can be easily ignored if you hate her so much. I suspect whatever game she's working on isn't one you'll want to play anyways.

It's a poison pill. Look at what is happening to Arkane Studios.

those are all 100% legit controversies...DLC being released so soon, graphics downgrade, PS4 Pro offering a better experience etc...of course Insomniac is going to give the by the books answer as to not upset anyone but does that mean they are telling the truth?...only time will tell

Digital Foundry: Debunking the Spider-Man 'downgrade'

Having stacked up the final game against the E3 2017 presentation, our overall conclusion is that Insomniac is on the money here - there have been changes, as there are during production of any game - but there has been no technical downgrade...in fact, we'd say that the final presentation is upgraded in key respects, both technical and artistic...

Didn't really check this thread at the time, but I added a new video that should suffice, sorry!

Reviews seem very solid, pretty excited to get in on the action on Friday morning myself. In regards to "Puddlegate" or whatever it is that people are calling it, I've read reports that it's basically all horseshit, and that if anything, it's been more of an upgrade. The game regularly runs between 3456×1944 to 2560×1368, with the average being 2816×1584. I think we can basically set the notion of this being an issue aside.

Not sure what you're referring to. I'm not sure I've ever been interested in one of their games in the past or present.

Edit: Oh, that controversy with the twitter argument that ended up with two people fired.

looks like I'll add this to the list of PS4 games to play when I decide to get another PlayStation...I bought a PS4 for Bloodborne, kept it for over a year and played Uncharted 1-4 and Last of Us before selling it right before the PS4 Pro launched...Spider Man, God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn are the must-buy games

that all red color scheme for the Spider Man PS4 is too red for my tastes...I'll take the standard black any day over that

They tried to discredit it during the early going that it was solely about the puddles, but you can see more than that in the comparisons. Lighting and textures were noticeably worse in the later E3 trailers. It's not a big deal to me, but it is worth pointing out. I personally thought the Watch_Dogs and Witcher 3 controversies were also way overblown.

Most games Pro enhanced average around 1440 vertical resolution, so this is not at all surprising, either.

The most important fact for me is the game looks like a lot of fun despite my Negative Nancy comments in this thread, and I'll probably be buying it tonight.

I hear you, it's overblown in general, as is the norm these days.

I'd grab it before end of day. I buy everything form Best Buy due to the gamer's club discount, but there are some neat pre-order bonuses, like the suit and dynamic theme. I ended up biting on the regular version, couldn't get my hands on a Collector's at this time and refused to pay the scalper premium.

The game is outstanding. Wish I had more time to play it, but was too damn tired to play more than couple hours last night and have to actually work today so I can't really play it much until later. The web swinging feels great, I've mostly been ignoring the story and doing side stuff. It is a very good looking game. There are a lot of little, easy to miss, details in the texture work throughout the game and it really adds up to make it look great. I like the somewhat more muted, fabric, look of the advanced suit compared to the shiny, super glossy, look of the trailers. It just fits the world better. The camera is not great, but it works (mostly). The controls feel smooth and responsive, I've yet to feel like I'm fighting to keep control of Spidy. I've only done enough story mission to unlock costume options and the side activities, but I like the characters they've introduced so far and I'm interested in seeing how Peter's job (I won't spoil what it is) fits into the over-all narrative or if its more of sub-plot.

Awesome to hear, and your impressions basically fit with what I've been told by friends and people online. I'm going to pick up when I go grab some food, then start playing for the remainder of the day. When you mention the fabric of the suit, are you talking about that sort of "tech/tron" looking suit perhaps, or? Do you have any comparisons of the more muted vs glossy look? I seem to recall the standard suit looking more matte throughout the trailers, but then you'd sometimes get a glimpse of a few other ones.

Check out the Digital Foundry video on the game's graphics. They do a good job going into detail on the suit differences between release and trailers.

I just found the suit part in their comparison, you're right, it does look more fabric-like in the release version, which I'd say I prefer.

I really like how the game handles side-activities. They're unlocked during story missions, as with most open-world games, but they don't overwhelm you with them. They'll unlock a couple, then you'll have a couple story missions that advance the main plot, then a couple missions will unlock side-activities, and so on. Unless you're running through a bunch of story missions at once the map shouldn't feel overwhelmed with side stuff. So far, each side-activity hasn't had too many things littering the map. Seems like some side stuff has more in certain areas of the city than others, which makes sense given what they are and those areas. Even the tower equivalent stuff wasn't too jam packed.

Combat and stuff are still really fun. Game does seem to lack in terms of skill upgrade options though and it seems like you will be able to unlock all of them pretty easily, even without the 5 bonus points from pre-ordering. The rest of the unlocks seem varied enough though. Each gadget has upgrades to them and it does look like there are a good number of suits in the game, along with little suit mods you can upgrade to give different bonuses. If you like collecting trophies looks like this one will be easy to Platinum. There are no difficulty based trophies and all of them can be unlocked in one playthrough.

how does the game compare to the best PS4 games like Bloodborne, Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War?

I was getting annoyed that this game wasn't playing like the Arkham games, but I slowed down and am enjoying it now. I think I restarted the game like 20 times (made a hard save at the beginning of the first fight so I didn't have to sit through that 3 minute unskippable cutscene). Was most annoyed that you don't have a real counter move until I found out it's a skill you can unlock. I think I am going to be quite annoyed by the quick time events in this game. May turn on the auto complete option for them. My eyes were rolling hard at the end of the fight with Fisk at the start of the game, and I have a feeling all the boss fights are going to end this way. The map is really big and they made the web slinging fun, so thank goodness for that.

Gameplay is more classic open-world action adventure. Think Infamous, but with Insomniac's flair. The game looks really great and plays smoothly on PS4 Pro, perhaps better than Horizon.

Played for a few hours this weekend and had a good time. I'm getting the hang of web slinging through the city, but there's a certain level of skill needed when going between smaller gaps gracefully and landing smoothly, which feels great once you manage to accomplish both. Combat is definitely very fluid, and I liked that there's something for the novice and advanced gamer alike. By that I mean, you can just mash buttons and still have good looking choreography in combat, but if you really time moves and take advantage of air and ground combat situations effectively, it starts to take on this cinema-like fluidity, which is awesome to witness. Anyway, thumbs up from me, glad I got it.

I didnt have good grasp of the combat at first till I unlock some skills and learned how important to dodge and counter attack. With those skills unlocked, combat gameplay now feels like a veteran spidey. Same with swinging around the city. This game gives you the freedom to be creative when swinging and even if you messed up, you still looked good :D

I meant how does it compare in terms of best PS4 games of this generation...does it match up with the best of the best like God of War etc?

Too early for me to say, but I'm really enjoying it so far. Maybe not the likes of God of War, but definitely at least as good as Horizon: Zero Dawn.
