I very well remember playing Dead Space a little over 8 years ago, and if I recall correctly, it was, and likely still is a very fun game to play, and by "fun" I mean being terrified while you while doing your best to defend yourself against some very nasty aliens. No headshots for you! Dead Space is free for a limited time. It is bit over 6GB in download size. Get you some!

Check out the video.

Messy monster slaying. The Necromorphs are unlike any enemies you've seen before. Headshots do about as much damage to them as flicking rubber bands. To survive, you'll need to dismember their insect-like limbs, one at a time.

Wasn't this the game that was made for console and got an awful port to the PC where the controls with mouse and keyboard seemed like you were moving a controller stick?
Besides the whole control issue, which was an annoying deal for a fps, it was a decent horror game.

Wow, was not expecting to see this message firing it up.

Loved DS.. and 2-3. Would love to see a remake/remaster for the Rift/Vive.... Scary in 3rd person.. VR is shit your pants scary.

Not to all.. Dead space was (its actually) a great game to enjoy in PC.. Dead space its not an FPS (you are probably referring to dead Island which have actually terrible mouse controls)

I just replayed it in time for Halloween last year and it still holds up very well.

?? It's a third person shooter in a space station, kind of like resident evil in space. It's not exactly high action. And i wasn't mistaken about the controls being an issue: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=232050455.
I had massive issues playing this game. The joke going around is that the protagonist isn't a soldier, but an engineer and therefore can't aim/shoot properly:

Dead Space 1 actually has some problems with k/mb - the sensitivity is tied to framerate, mouse movement is incredibly sluggish at very high FPS (100+). In game vsync locks you at 30, but it can be circumvented by forcing a proper vsync in the driver.

Good game/series, too bad they fucked up the future of the franchise by shoehorning micro-transactions into DS3.

While I agree, fuck micro-transactions! They are such a non-issue in Dead Space 3 I completely forgot they even had them. It's even easy to miss the button press to get to the correct screen.

I don't remember having any issues playing on PC, but hell I might have just used my 360 controller at the time, I can't remember it's been so long.

Anyways, I own this game on Steam, Origin, and 360 and played through it a couple times on both platforms. Fuggin love this game and wish they would bring it back or make some kind of spiritual sequel/remake of it. The graphics and interface (no HUD) were amazing, but the absolute star of the game was the sound design. Playing in my dark basement at night time with my 5.1 Z5500 speakers booming and rumbling the whole time was surreal.

DS2 was equally great too. I've tried to play through DS3 a couple times, but keep bailing after a couple hours because it seemed much more action-oriented and less suspenseful than the previous ones.

Yeah, it was definitely playable without, but IIRC they did make certain upgrade mechanics dependent on them. There was some super-rare material that either took an eternity to get, or you could just buy it with micro-transactions.

Isn't this the game they marketed to angsty rebellious teens using the ridiculous phrase "your parents would hate this game"?

I vaguely remember getting a free version with a GPU purchase several years back and testing it.

I didn't last more than 5-10 minutes because I can't stand 3rd person games, but to each their own.

What a terrible disorder. I feel for you man. :p

At least half of my favorite games are 3rd person. Hell that would rule out any Naughty Dog games on Playstation, which are fuggin amazing games.

For me the following are all "I'd rather not play games at all than play this" conditions:

- it's 3rd person
- it uses a controller
- it's on a console
- it's anywhere other than on a proper desktop PC at a proper desk. (None of this mobile or livingroom bs for me)

I haven't touched consoles or controller based games since 1991 when I got rid of my NES in favor of my first PC :p

Personally for me it was never really about the games. At least not in my adult years. I was always a PC hardware enthusiast first. Games were just something I did because I had the PC hardware :p

If I try really hard.. I can almost understand that. But it's like saying "I love to bang chicks, but not because I love banging or even chicks, I just like to use my dick for something."

I am not a third person fan, but the Dead Space series is very good.

I enjoyed all three. Get it, especially if it's free.

Dead space is still one of my favorites. Yes the controls were a little clunky but far from unplayable. I'd even go as far as to say that the controls weren't bad once you had the chance to adapt. Overall it's an awesome game. I'm a bit biased though, I love sci-fi horror. System shock 2 is probably my all time favorite and DS has a lot in common with it.

I thought DS2 was just as good in it's own way. DS3 was one of the most disappointing games I've ever played. Piece of garbage.

If you've never played DS1, give it a go.

I was always under the impression the sluggish controls were there on purpose because you're supposed to be in a mining rig in space so you aren't going to be able to turn on a dime. I actually liked that aspect, intended or not.

As most have said DS1 > DS2 >> DS3. Once they gave Isaac a voice I was worried. Then they made some sort of crappy love triangle.

DS2 was the best.

I can't seem to remember my origin pw at the moment, oh well, not likely to ever play this again anyway. But free games are good, keep it up EA!

Loved the first two, replayed them both a few times back in the day. My only real complaint was in each first play through after 4-5 levels it became pretty obvious how a future level would make you backtrack to locked room for something. That tedious approach really got annoying after a while but seriously I otherwise thought these games were fantastic. At one point John Carpenter had talked about trying to do a movie based on them. I think it could've been really cool. DS3 had a lot of potential. Loved the space missions and the planet side stuff but some parts(pun intended) really seemed uninspired. Still recommend them to any one who's out for some good old fashioned space horror and the overall story of the first two combined is pretty awesome!

You should give Infini a watch. It's got a very large Dead Space vibe.

When this game first came out people were thinking it was cutting edge everything.

I attempted to play this game on PC a few different times and it always crashed terribly and was so buggy that you could not enjoy it. Did they fix something before making it free? Or is that the joke?

It had a game breaking bug where you couldn't go through a door necessary to advance in the game unless you did some kind of v sync change. Mouse control was bad unless you made changes to your mouse controls outside the game.

A 360 controller is perfect for this game.

DS3 was excellent if you play through to the end. It gets progressively more like the second game as you get toward the end. Once the story moves to the planet surface it becomes a completely different game. You should give it a try again and push through those first few hours. I gave up on the game at first, as well, for the same reasons, but I went back to it to finish out the story and I was not disappointed. Make sure you get the DLC expansion because it gives the story a proper ending.

At no point during the game did I feel the need to upgrade my weapons beyond the materials I found randomly, and I played it on the hardest difficulty.

I would add Pandorum to that. Has a decent Dead Space-vibe to it, but is also an excellent sci-fi flick in my opinion. Wasn't obviously inspired by Dead Space like Infini was, though.

Yes, but having to have a controller on a pc game is what makes it scream awful port. The standard on PC is mouse and keyboard (except maybe for flight sims). Aiming with a controller is always piss poor compared to a mouse.

It's the way it controls. Much like Resident Evil 4 there is a purposeful “sluggishness” to aiming that doesn’t translate well to mouse and keyboard. It’s optimal with a controller, as simple as that. Just like I wouldn’t use a controller on an RTS, most driving games are better with a steering wheel, A joystick for flight sims or fight stick for fighting games.

Is it required, no. Do you want the optimal experience, well I recommend a controller in this case.

I disagree. The game is much more enjoyable with keyboard and mouse. Just lock the game to 60 FPS and you won't have any issues. Or you can use the fix linked to earlier in the thread.

Man I just bought them on the Steam Sale too.

Oh well, it's a fantastic game and I recommend it. Then get 2, and if you're interested in the story, watch the cutscenes of 3.

I played it on PS3. On PC it looks so much better.

Playing FPS I would always agree K&M is almost always best. Something about 3rd person games I prefer a controller. It just feels right to me. To each his own.

But it's not the way it's supposed to control. It's due to a bad port and a vsync issue. Please tell me any other game in which vsync has anything to do with controls? There're normally completely separate and have nothing to do with each other.

I played through the original on the Xbox 360 and thought it was fantastic.

I'm guessing 4K/60+ is probably possible with modern PC hardware, yes?

Tell me what other game controls like that even on consoles? It's much different from other 3rd person games, Gears of War, Uncharted, Last of Us, Deus Ex, even newer Thief games. The only one I can think of that comes close is Resident Evil 4 (which I believe is bad with K&M on PC from what I've heard). RE5 and especially RE6 are arguable at best.

Which of any of those games had control issues tied to vsync? Deadspace 2 and 3 didn't have those issues. Is it unfair to compare it to their sequels if you're going to say it's a unique animal with no comparables?
