We joined a bit late, but we are already in 4th. I thought we would be able to easily surpass 3rd place UK in a week, but it seems they've increased their production by a lot. Now we are only outputting a couple hundred more than they are daily.

In order for us to surprass them we are gonna have to change up our projects to projects that have the quickest result return time. So far I've more than doubled my daily result output by switching to Fight Aids @ Home. Its the bottom on, not Phase 2.

I went from around 2k a day to aeound 9k per day. Our teams overall output during that time was 14.3k. UKs output was 14k.

Link to the challenge.

I'll jump in for a bit..... cannot make any promises though. Power costs are killing me here already. Had I stayed in on F@H years back when Pocatello and I were neck and neck all the time I'd probably have a title or two by now. :sneaky: Life happens though....

Weeeeee..... I have no idea how this will perform but my workstation is not exactly a slouch. :D

Heh.... edit to add, I can already feel the extra heat from the tower. I need to hook my kill-a-watt up and see how much this 1300w power supply is going to pull when I'm tasking the system like this.

Agree. I've being running mostly FAH v1 and I'm in the top 10 in regards to total results returned thus far by the team... :D

I'm sure you can catch up with me with the hardware that you've got.

Yeah I think I can crush out 10k daily. 9k was the first day I switched it over. And today isnt over with yet.

pututu, wasn't the RIGID work units the ones you said were scoring the best for you?

Yes, the non-RIGID work unit scores the best but there are ways to make the RIGID work unit to score high too. Not sure how long this will last....

For this challenge, it is the total results returned, not the points. The non-RIGID has short run time which is good for this challenge.

I have no idea if this is good or not...... I've not spent enough time looking at the WCG stuff yet. This is I guess after a little over 16 hours of running (I'm guess it prevented this machine from going to sleep overnight).

To all: we now have non-rigid WUs now for FAH. This gives you the most number of results returned per hour. Each WU takes about 2-4 mins. I think you can download ~1000 tasks per rig, so if you have VMs setup (virtual machines) that will help insanely. The availability normally lasts half a day to full day. Good luck.

Unfortunately, I have to run the SCC work units as I want to hit my 5 year run time goal before the projects ends....

Neat - in the client advanced view you can abort tasks and suspend tasks. I aborted a ton of rigid ones that were just sitting there in a ready to start state. Those then disappeared and it then downloaded a pile of the new ones. I then suspended the tasks on the rigid ones that were under 50% complete and it started on a bunch of the new ones. Yeah - those run fast! I'll leave the few rigid ones that are over 50% complete running until they finish and I'll un-suspend the other rigid ones once the fast running ones peter out.

Hmm, can't view the link that you provided above. Perhaps I've to subscribe to something or lack certain privilege?

Ah yeah. They put the subscription back in place with Genmay now. You'll have to pay $5 a year or $15 lifetime subscription to gain access now. Used to be open to registered members for a short while.

Do they still give it to [H] members that hit various milestones as a reward for folding for the team?

I believe Pocatello is still the man to talk to in regards to setting it up. However, what an acceptable point amount should be I don't know. I don't run FAH enough to get a good feel for it. I do want it to be a reward of sorts but also want to make sure it draws people rather than just being an elitist club. So, someone more FAH focused should probably drop some thoughts on the subject.

I'll start a new discussion about this as soon as I'm not behind the wheel.

Lots of things need to be discussed. Such as should we leave it to F@H only? Points we should change it to.

Skillz, Pocatello, please keep us updated on how we can qualify this from DC contribution perspective to the [H] team. I'm ok if it is fair and reasonable. Hopefully nothing unreasonable like recent UAL incident, lol.

Is this all CPU or can you throw GPU at it as well?

Does it work better on linux or is it the same regardless of platform?

Is all CPU. Linux crunches faster than Windows. FightAids@home phase 1 project yields the best result since this challenge is all about the number of results returned, not points.

Is there a performance hit if its a VM on a windows box or should it be run natively?

Natively would run faster. However, running the FAAH phase 1 Vina apps within a Linux VM is still running faster than natively on Windows...

I can easily put up a linux VM on my 2016 DC server. I have 2 more computers worth but I lack hard drives for them, so I'll have to find some in order to use those as well.

You can run boinc off of Ubuntu live CD's. Just don't restart...lol

Pretty sure you can run it off any Linux Live DVD as long as you don't restart and have enough RAM to store everything there.

Well..I just know it is in the repository and is easy to run from the Ubuntu Live disks as I have done it many of times in the past testing hardware or waiting on HDD's to get replaced. But sure if you can set it up without restarts, then it should work.

Im bringing one VM online shortly. Forgot I previously deleted the install.

I have just the bare minimums to get the machines up. I going to try to install Ubuntu on a USB stick, the issue is I only have 2 USB sticks so I wont be able to bring the 3rd up.

Got a VM up and running. Trying to get F@H on it as well but it just says its still trying to connect.

Ill try to get the other up tonight if possible.

How are you guys doing CPU temp monitoring in Ubuntu? I dont think there is a linux driver available for my AIO so controlling the pump looks to be out of the question.

Got 14 cores up between 2 machines now.

Figured out how to do temp monitoring as well. I just couldnt get control of my AIOs pump since its 3 pin so I left the fan at 100%.

Ill try to get the 3rd up alittle later.

We are slowly catching them now. If the current trend continues we will catch them on the 29th.

I've cleared 215,000 points and 2,000 results returned since I started in this thread. No idea if thats good or not but it should help.

Yes very helpful! We fell behind UK this last up by a hundred points or so.

Not sure if the gap will be that close but it should help. I FINALLY found the fan clips for my Hyper 212 so Ill get it up and running as I had to finish the tasks on my server as it was needed for other things.

Well my USB drive died that was in the remaining system.

I happened to have the screen on and then it went black and wouldn't come back on. Tried messing around with it and couldn't recover with USB errors and not able to find an active file system. Lucky I found another USB just large enough to use to boot and install and Im putting Ubuntu on my only non cheap USB stick. Let's hope this works but it means I'm out of USBs so I wont be able to get the second machine up and running now until I find me a cheap HDD or SSD.

I just hope I can recover the WUs from the server since any data stored locally is gone.

Every little bit helps. Though it seems we're not gonna get 3rd place. UK increased their production ten-fold since we started.
