Win 7 Or Win 10?

And they arent good to begin with on 10.
You cant trust your security and telemetry settings will remain the same after an update.
Appalling.

Using 10 is not something I look forward to, I'm sticking with 7 for as long as possible.
I havent encountered a single negative vs Windows 10, I can do everything I always did.
Its the same OS it was and it looks nice.

10 is awesome. Stop.
 
Even if you like Windows 7's UI, you still can't access the Windows store (which houses the Xbox Anywhere games) or DX12. You won't ever be able to play 4K Netflix or UHD Blu-Rays (thanks to DRM), either.
Those are definite limitations. They might not be huge now, but they're getting bigger by the day.
There's more in play than just the OS's interface. MS is locking down new tech.
 
I'll have no problem with 4K video, my Blu Ray player will handle it.
I have never used the Windows store and have no intention of doing so.
It seems to be as bad as Windows 10 for causing problems.

ps Windows 10 wont have access to 4K Blu Ray disks either.
 
I've stuck with windows 7; of course skylake is the last chipset supported by windows 7 (also support ends in a bit over 3 years). I see no reason for windows 10; so I hope by 2020 games mostly support linux :)
 
It isnt that newer chipsets wont be supported by Win 7, its that new CPU extensions wont be supported.
These take years to become mainstream because they have no effect on current software.
And even then most dont get much use for mainstream PC use and gaming.
ie AVX.
 
I will stay with Windows 7. All I here is 10 supports DX 12, but how many games are there that support DX 12. 14 or so. I'll stay with 7 right till the end. Hopefully by then 10 will be better then what it is now!
 
After trying all of 7, 8.1 and 10, my conclusion is, plain and simple: the version that gives you best compatibility.

The 'best' here becomes very different from player to player. I gave 8.1 a try when I assembled a new computer, unfortunately I later found that one of my games (Company of Heroes 2 I believe it was) completely and utterly refused to run on Windows 8.1, so I reverted it back to Windows 7. To date, 8.1 is one of my least used OS's, probably followed by Vista (to me Vista was the worst OS, games refused to shutdown properly and I had to do a restart everytime I wanted to run another game).

Currently I use 10, because 10 has better backwards compatibility than windows 7.

I usually prefer compatibility than performance, because compatibility allows you to play, performance can be compensated with better hardware. If it will not allow you to play a certain game, it wouldn't matter if it gave you 100% better perf everywhere else.

Incorrect, they added Telemetry / spying to 7/8/8.1 months ago with several updates.
 
I liked 7 a lot, I like 10 more. Personally it has been more stable and even easier to maneuver than 7. I put Win 10 on all 4 of my PC's and a couple of my laptops.
 
Use the above advice. Win 10 screwed me a few times early on, as in having to reinstall. But lately it has been ok. That can change in a heartbeat, due to forced updates. I do weekly restore points, and anything important goes to my external 3TB HDD.

less performance isn't enough?.. specially in the CPU resources management. games don't only run better on windows10 they feel actually way much better than windows7 in al senses, again specially those that are heavy on CPU.. oh and btw Win7 and win8/8.1 also have the "spy patches" with telemetry ;)..

Tell me where I am getting less performance.
Considering I get solid 60fps and a very smooth experience...

I dont have the spy patches, I am able to decide what is installed.
And can uninstall them after the event.
Windows 10 is the "only" OS out of all OS's where you have to suck it.

As a computer tech in real life, I recommend installing Windows 10 then removing any modules that you know you will never use or just don't want. I'm currently running the upgrade and after upgrading drivers and removing packages my install is rock solid. I loved Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit but after using Windows 10 for several months, and learning what does what - when - where, I'm hooked. Many normal, daily tasks are much easier to execute. I'm not a fan of Cortana yet the search feature is excellent. Gaming is great on my rig in sig.
 
I held off on going to 10 till late this summer and after using it for a couple of weeks I went ahead and put 10 on all my machines since it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be with the interface change.
I actually prefer the 10 interface over 7 now.
2 of my machines were upgrades from 7 as I didn't want to spend days installing all my apps and games, both run fine with no issues.
 
When the 10 insider preview came out I tried it out, Wasnt really impressed and the first program I installed(Stardock Fences Free) wouldnt work, I swore off 10 and that I would never ever use it, This past summer, I learned that the free version was designed to not work on 10, and then 2 months ago I purchased the 10 Home on USB, was impressed by the super fast install, got to desktop less than 15 minutes after starting the install, Found some suitable free replacements for the programs that made 7 enjoyable for me, Got my taskbar the way I have always liked it with quick launches, learned that you can remove stuff from the start menu to make it appear less bloated.

I am not one of those people who is concerned about telemetry gathering, I figure only those who need to be concerned are those on internet that is capped or possibly those who do stuff that might get them sent to federal prison, Basically there is no guarantee of privacy anywhere on the internets and I am at peace with that.
 
I suppose you could always wait for windows 11....

personally, i'm holding out for when the computer can read my mind...don't laugh, they're working on it (brainwaves and all that stuff)

i also tell time by using the sun dial in my backyard..its a real bitch at night
 
I was tempted to skip the free upgrade at the time to windows 10 but I decided to do it. The reasoning behind it was that I decided to take up the challenge to dominate my pc and set it up to my liking. There was also the problem of PC literacy, I didn't want to fall behind to the point where if I needed to use a Windows 10 PC in the future I didn't know my way around it.

If you are a gamer it's a simple choice. Windows 10, it's DX12 compliant, and windows won't support new processors on older version of windows.
The OS is fine once you adjust it, I turned off Cortana and used some commands on powershell to remove some of the extra software like groove music, and I disabled some of the other nonsense. It boots up quicker. Game performance is about same. I have a hate love relationship with the windows apps. They add some functionality like the crunchyroll app if you use that service, not the best but MS did not make it. Weather app is nice.

I managed to make my bar look more like a traditional windows pc. My Griffin power mate works better on windows 10, it did not have driver support beyond windows vista so when windows 7 came out it was broken, it could be used but required relaunching the app constantly. On windows 10 I launch the program once and it usually stays functional. It's nice if you have a mechanical keyboard with no fancy volume keys.

I can understand that windows 10 might not be the OS for them if they have concern that they are being watched by their OS. Then again Nvidia was using some telemetry monitoring, and some ISP sell people out for downloading questionable things.
 
Windows 10 post Anniversary build 1607 (August update) is best.

Windows 7 is old, clunky and future support by Microsoft for security updates is a crap shoot on date. My TAM can't even give me a real straight faced answer. I don't know a single (well run, well engineered) enterprise corporation that will touch that OS.

Windows 11 is "never" happening. It's been widely known for years now that Windows 10 and Server 2016 are the "last" Window's OS's. Microsoft plan from here on forward is to simply continue to iterate and update these OS's indefinitely. Their kernal is flexible enough for this.

So you either get onboard with Windows 10.. the only Windows OS or you just choke on dust and get left behind is the real answer. However the echo chamber of internet forums and pod casters would tell people otherwise. Just because people on forums keep repeating and telling one another that Windows 7 is a viable option heading into 2017.. doesn't mean they're right. It means they like to hear themselves talk, sprinkled with a little bit of placebo.

Newer CPUs will be supported and will work. Just the new extensions wont ""if"" Intel/AMD dont release a driver with the added features.

ie AVX, AVX2.

DX12 for the most part makes performance worse. It brings no quality improvement.
Its better to use DX11 and in the case of TombRaider, you can use higher quality Ambient Occlusion thats not available in DX12.

I'm imagining that there will be a Windows 11 or whatever comes after 10, but 10 when to agile and there won't been another Windows developed under a three year waterfall approach.

It is inevitable, 7 is just going to get older, it's presence in gaming is going to shrink and it's just going to fall off the radar as over time as new stuff comes out.
 
For running the latest games and all/most of the games over the years, Win 10. How about one PC for just pure gaming, and a low p

For running the latest games and all/most of the games over the years, Win 10. Might as well start with the latest OS and setting it up as best as you can. For me, I'm sticking with Win 7, I feel like I have better control over it.

Please explain the fundamental and/or technical difference between Win10 and Win7 that prevents the inclusion of DX12 in 200 words or less. Please double space and write in an APA style. You will be graded on sounding like a MS shill and using asshattery such as "UXP", "progress", "Unified platform", etc. This assignment is worth 1 internet point.

Windows 10 because Forza Horizon 3 is worth every penny that Microsoft charges for it in the Windows Store. DX12 rocks!
