AMD Polaris .. supply problems abound

Yes i think the 199 is the card for me. I'm not sure if an extra 50 is worth 8gb for 1080P. Thoughts?

Well I'm sure that the AIB cards won't unlock to 8GB. Also Doom and Mirror's Edge Catalyst want 6GB of VRAM for certain high end "texture pack" features to be enabled. So 4GB is fine for 1080p and 1440p today; but there are things that you'd be missing out on day one if purchasing a 4GB card. I doubt that it's going to ruin your experience, but it is something to think about.

My rule of thumb is get what you can afford and don't worry about the rest!

More and more games are beginning to really take advantage of more than 4 gigs, Rise of the Tomb Raider almost requires, Witcher 3, Doom, Mirror's Edge Catalyst and i image more games coming out will need it. If you want to add some longevity I would definitely recommend going for 8 if you plan to upgrade in a year or two no reason.

Using a 970 (RX480 performance comparable), Witcher 3 doesn't use anywhere near 4GB at 1080p at the settings with playable framerates (almost max except HW) - uses 2.2-2.5GB. DOOM gets me to 2.8-3.0 with max allowable settings (obviously not Nightmare) including the highest TSAA at the same resolution...it only hit >3.5GB at the same settings @ 1440p DSR.

RoTR definitely uses that much and more. ME: C, yeah, probably.

It is definitely something one does not absolutely need yet, especially if you plan to upgrade again in just a couple of years and are sticking with a 1080p panel.

The question is not about stock here question is about msrp price or close to it. 4gb and 8gb are two different msrp, 4gb for 199 and 8gb has been going for 239.99. Point here is they are not being price gauged and have stayed relatively close to their msrp. So what you said about 199 not being available that was for lowest model 8gb was never suppose to be 199. Regardless of the fact that the initial batch was all 8gb and one being sold as 4gb. The main point being msrp not being priced insanely and people being asked to pay 50 premium.
It is about stock when one uses the $199 as an example because it was deliberately done in small batch and used their 8GB model to fullfill.
You really think the later batches of 4GB $199 will have 8GB?

Ed Crisler (Sapphire Ed), their head PR guy, confirmed today in a Twitch broadcast that he has no new info on the Sapphire Nitro and that it "hasn't even gone into production yet." Sapphire Italy has told a user that the July 22nd date is incorrect an they they don't even expect to ANNOUNCE a launch date until sometime in August.

The RX 480 has become a cluster. AMD's most important launch in who knows how long, and they have completely botched this in so many ways.

Shit sheriff, that is real bad news. I was holding off in the remote chance that the AIB cards were going to be a big improvement over the stock cards. If they really are going to take this long, I might have to just grab something else.

If the rumors about the 1060 launch being soon, this could put a sizable dent in AMD'S bottom line.

There are no rumors about a 160 launch. It was confirmed by Nvidia on July 7th that the launch date is Tuesday, July 19th. On Tuesday, you should be able to get a FE, reference, or aftermarket GTX 1060. We'll see how quickly supply flies off the shelf.

If aib 480 is not available until august I will most likely be relaxing with a new 1060 instead of a 480....
I hope this is not the case

Sorry, that is the one I meant. We will see though.

Relax. Most of the 480s are probably going to OEMs for their systems.
Then why can't I find any major OEMs offering systems with an RX 480 ?
I checked Dell, HP, and Lenovo and I didn't see an RX 480 available in any of their systems.

Check out newegg and Best Buy. Newegg has plenty of oem offering it.

Plus Hp, Lenovo, and dell are not really looked at for gaming systems. More for laptops then gaming desktops. Best buys and other retailers usually showcase other manufactures for gaming systems.

Judging by Steam HW Survey May to June numbers, 1080 appears to sell at almost half the rate of the 970...that is absolutely batshit insane considering the enormous real price tag difference between the two and this much early in the Pascal cycle despite the supply constraint narrative. No recent AMD GPU, regardless of price even comes close to selling as well as the 1080. (other than the obviously inaccurate numbers like the 390 which was zero % share only until June 2016)
If the 390 number can be obviously inaccurate why believe any of the others?

Hmm I must be missing something. Looking at steam june survey. All I see is 970 on top. I don't even see a 1080. Where is this number coming from? Plus even if that was the case that number doesn't say shit. This is a new product ofcourse there aren't shit load of people buying 970 in june as there are better cards coming out such as rx480 and gtx 1060. It is obvious high end users are pulling the plug on 1080 as that is a bigger upgrade for them from 980. To say 1080 is selling so much its none sense to compare it to 970 since this so early in its life cycle. Ofcourse is popular card and new gen its going to outsell 970 since 1080 is geared towards 980 owners and above.

980/970 users have no reason to switch to RX 480 or GTX 1060 unless they can side step cheaply. My GTX 970 at 1,5 GHz (no extra volts) is rather fast.

Add 390 and 390x users to that statement, as well. A 390 @ 1100MHz easily keeps up with a stock 980.

You apparently don't know that Dell owns Alienware. And HP and Lenovo both sell gaming systems, including GTX 1080 based systems.

Newegg shows CyberPower and iBuyPower selling RX 480 systems, both of which have crap reputations and neither of which is a major PC OEM.
In contrast, if you want a Dell Alienware with a GTX 1070 or 1080, Dell is offering them.

I know that very well lol. Alienware no doubt will have 1070 and 1080 and almost every oem will give you that option because if you demand high end system those are the the go to choices. I am talking about decent gaming system below 1000 that doesn't brake the bank here.

and some can be unlocked to 390x. My nephews had remaining 4 CUs software locked, a simple bios flash unlocked em all and ran like a charm.

He never said anything about production. You might want to watch the saved stream again. As a mod on that channel, all I can say is you need to listen closer to what he says.

The video read taken down to review and fix something, but I wasn't the only one who heard him say it. He absolutely said it.

It is not the AIB's fault, AMD over-sold on reference so the GPU went to building more reference to clear those backorders.

Sapphire alone have 5000 backorders on RX 480 reference still to fulfill in just the UK alone, that is the reason.

People post so much BS up, the real reasons are simply RX-480 demand was way way above what AMD could ever predicted. Custom cards go into product this weekend at numerous board partners.

Posting this from another forum, but sounds more like a demand than supply problem.

I just saw that. And I also got this from another forum:

Demand for this card was huge. AMD knew that it was going to be high, but nobody expected the kind of reaction that we saw. My MicroCenter (Kansas City area) had a few hundred in stock. I picked mine up at lunchtime and they were already sold out of the 4GB models and had less than 50% remaining on the 8GB models. They sold out completely some time around 4pm. That's not just "high demand", that strikes me as "appallingly high demand"

So you're saying that AMD had no idea that the mainstream product they were selling at a mainstream price to capture mainstream marketshare wouldn't sell the fuck-ton of cards they needed to sell just to be successful at stated mission of capturing said mainstream marketshare? :banghead:

I haven't said a thing. I was quoting the statement of another. Go to Overclockers UK. Tell the owner of his website exactly how you feel.

I'm quite sure that you posted something in there. Linking to someone else's post of a situation in affirmation of your BS quote is essentially you agreeing with the poster.

Well, let's be honest, the card was overhyped, not directly by AMD that we can see, but was overhyped... so maybe they thought that people were gonna be massively put off for the 970 performance? maybe they didn't even believe that they could actually triumph for once? sounds crazy, but this happens.

Also, maybe, they just had way more demand than could be expected even in their wildest expectations.

In any case, cheers for the people upgrading.

Unfortunately the only RX 480s that I am interested in are custom AIB cards so the longer the wait for them to come out the less likely AMD gets my money this generation.

If you took the time to click the link. The little link on the page. The link that I linked. I even linked it twice for you. Twice I tell you! Not once; but twice!!!

You'd know that I was quoting someone that was quoting another person. I don't create websites in my spare time so I just copy and pasted like that. I guess I could have looked up the HTML to make a quote about a quote, but honestly I don't care to do that.

I figured that after you read that I said the owner of Overclockers UK said it, and there was a link to Overclockers UK in my post... I figured you'd take the time to click the link. Oh well. Tis a shame. A pity. :(

ocuk has Sapphire RX 480s with EK waterblock installed for £319.12 (price with shipping to US, about $434.80 USD if my math is right, according to paypal). If it wasn't for the $35 shipping and $60 mark-up (434.8 - 100 (wb) - 35 (shp) - 239 (gpu) = 60.8), I'd jump on it. :/

You might want to consider how you quote people from external links. Even using the word Source would have indicated it wasn't your own words.

Also OCUK were the ones saying 1070/1080 were more successful than even 970 in terms of launch sales.
So I would like to think those liking their comments about 480 also appreciate the same now with what they said about 1070/1080 rather than saying it had launch issues :)

Anyway AMD will have the same challenges, they need to setup their production line and logistics for a certain level of demand otherwise it becomes inefficient and deemed to be a financial negative, of course for both this is then balanced by missed sales now.
But consider how complex and large the complete sales-logistics-storage chain is, even if you do produce excess cards based on your forecast model, where do you send them in anticipation - doing this would eat into costs as these cards would probably need re-distribution again.
And that is ignoring constraints of the manufacturing line and storage capabilities.
So I am not surprised both AMD and Nvidia has supply challenges due to demand greater than their forecast models.
Cheers
