Fallout 4

It's your RAM.

yeah i read about RAM's effect on FPS but given i'm on P67 platform getting faster RAM than my current 1600mhz seems like a band aide on an open festering wound..ya?

DDR3 2400mhz is 65 bucks locally which is 10x cheaper than a skylake system overall.

It's up to your upgrade cycle. I don't think a 2500k would have too much difficulty with the game, nor will your vid card. I'm on Z97, 4690k, DDR3 2133 and GTX970 and it performs well.

Are u guys kidding me?? This is [H] forum not dumbass forum.....Dude...You have a 980Ti with 6GB Vram...As far as system ram, 8 GB is recommended but this game doesn't use more then games like GTA or Arkham Knight..... Seriously, we have similar specs, albeit I have 2 980Ti's and a 3770k at 4.6GHZ. i have 8 GB system ram. If you play at Ultra that is why you are seeing the dips....Drop Godrays down to medium or High and drop the shadow detail/distance down and your stuttering/dips will go away...

Edit- I also am running Mods like the real shader/sweetfx and a bunch of texture mods. I dipped into the 40-45 FPS range at 4k until I turned down Godrays/shadows from Ultra.....I can't even tell a difference between High/Ultra but my FPS are back up to 60fps....I do still get occasional dips into the low to mid 50's, but I play on a Samsung 49 inch JS9000 4k TV also....

Er... I don't think the discussion ever actually mentioned RAM size.

The discussion is about RAM speed, which has been shown that it dramatically affects FPS in FO4

EDIT: http://www.techspot.com/review/1089-fallout-4-benchmarks/page6.html

Ok, I just read the article but I seriously doubt that the Op rams speed of 1600 MHZ is the reason why he is experiencing the dips. Try dropping godrays and shadow distance/detail and I bet you will see a difference..Y because I had the same issue and tried to work out why I was getting the FPS drops on the same Skyrim engine that I can play with Full mods and get better FPS..... And seriously....with games it definitely has more to do with the GPU/Vram with everything else being a distant second albeit I would never roll with an AMD CPU

My rig is:

2600K @ 4.4
MSI GTX 980 Ti
32GB RAM
Samsung 850 Pro SSDs

I play at 2560 x 1600 with all options maxed. In heavily populated areas, I too sometimes get major slowdowns, even with my relatively beefy rig. For the most part it hasn't hindered my gameplay, so I don't sweat it.

dude this game is so taxing in the cities even with a 2500K @4.5 and a 980Ti. I'm close to buying a 6700K with 3200mhz DDR4. It just feels crazy to spend so much on gaming.
Unfortunately, that will not help. I have a 4790K at 4.4GHz with DDR3-2400 and a 980ti at 1405/2000MHz.

It's your RAM.
I went from DDR3-1600 to DDR3-2400 JUST for this game and saw zero improvement in cities or scenes with a lot of shit going on in them. This is with shadow distance at 6000. During these 'intense' scenes, CPU usage peaks at ~55% and GPU usage drops into the 60-70% range.

Yep, this leads me to believe it's the game and not our rigs or anything.

Exactly, not that there is anything wrong with it, though, as there is a crap-ton of things happening in the game engine, so it isn't too surprising that it isn't using 100% of our equipment.
It's a great game though, and it's the gameplay that really matters in Fallout 4's case, anyways.

I'm over 28 hours in, and so far I've only seen it crash once; that is heads and tails above the last two games in terms of reliability and performance.

Yes and no. When your framerate fluctuates wildly between 60 and 30 (since Vsync HAS to be enabled for the game to function), it is incredibly distracting.

Strange -- I use the NVIDIA Experience settings w/Reshade (pretty much everything on Ultra except Shadow Distance on Medium) and only very occasionally get drops into the 40s (once in the 20s around University Point, but that was a major engine glitch). Even in big, physics-heavy combats, I never drop below 50 FPS. (the under 50 drops are game engine glitches, most likely -- I don't get the massive drop in towns/cities, and Diamond City, at all times, is 53-60 FPS). Otherwise, it's all 50+ FPS range, averaging around 58-59. I have Adaptive sync enabled. My Xeon x5670 has HT enabled (6-core, 12-thread); I game @ 2560x1600, and the rest of my rig is in my sig -- I feel like I lucked out, after hearing everyone's complaints.

Side note: I do find that if I have a lot of browser tabs (15+) open that have Flash running (like the various game Wikias), F4 has a tendency to go slower on FPS and crash more often. Occasionally F4 crashes when I'm using MSI Afterburner (this is a tendency it shares with F3/New Vegas).

It must be all video card.

At 2560x1600, I need to run medium-ish settings with my OC'd and watercooled 2GB 6970...bogs down to single frames per second in cities when in-game loading new cell areas. Looking at GPUs for sale and debating an Nvidia with only slightly more VRAM than I have now or an AMD with a ton more VRAM.

I have a backup stock GTX 680 2GB, and it was tough going with that card when I tested it (my spare R9 280x provided slightly better performance at the same settings). All this with the latest drivers for both cards. Seems like 1440p+ on this game practically demands GTX 780/R9 290 or better for smooth performance w/medium to high settings, exactly as Bethseda's recommendations were.

So, I find myself pretty much agreeing with what NVIDIA officially stated here for F4 performance:

NVIDIA's Fallout 4 Video Card Recommendations

Substitute in GTX 780 for 970, and overclocked GTX 980 for GTX 980 Ti, and they are spot-on.

Yea, TBH I didn't even look at the official system requirements. Games have tended to be stagnant for a while as far as GPU strength goes. Eying this guy on Amazon (and I have a $25 Amazon gift card), not of a mind to need to blow $600 on a GPU to get the one of maybe two games I'll play for the next few months to run well.

EDIT or maybe this guy from Team Green...one guy locally is selling one of these for $200 firm...dunno what I want to do.

Seriously i upgraded to a 980Ti after about 40 hours into this game and the next 60 have been like a dream. so much better. I had 670s in SLI before. The only thing i miss about them is how warm they kept my office in the winter. I need new windows and my furnace died this week! New one getting installed Saturday :)

I've been considering upgrading my video card but can't see dropping another $500 right now. You think getting another 970 for SLI would be a good move at 1440p?

my non scientific subjective opinion suggests yes :) I had a 670 when it was new. added a second one sometime in 2012 and that got me 3 more years before i jumped to the 980ti.

last i checked SLI was still not officially supported in Fo4. I had it working with the bits you can google for but i wonder if it's officially supported now.

I'm hoping Bethesda fixes the user interface for PC in a patch...I've been holding off starting the game in the hopes that the 2nd major patch fixes a lot of the little issues...no matter how much the game does right, it always comes back with some irritation or bug to remind you of its flaws

There was an sli driver put out but it barely helps. Even with SLI980S my games still stutters in the city running max at 1680x1050

Not blowing $600USD+ on a GPU that gets used for maybe 2 video games in the upcoming year.

Just not doing it

Not liking your 970 performance (OC'd?)? Srsly curious. I suppose I can hold out and live with it until the Next Big Thing comes.

Holding out until Pascal/Greenland myself, and it's accompanying G-Sync/FreeSync monitor. We'll see how HDR is ... ;)

I am waiting for Pascal too, running on SLI 970's here.

The game mostly runs fine (I set my draw distances rather low, and lowered Shadow distance to medium and Godrays to low).

I haven't been in the city parts yet though, so I don't know how what kinda performance I'd get.

Oh, can anyone confirm if Romance is mutually exclusive or not? I was wondering if dating Preston would exclude me from dating others?

No, you can date all of them one by one.

I ran into some glitch trying to repair my power armor and can't get out. is there a console command or some other way to get out? rebooting didn't help. I keep shadowplay on so here's a video that shows it happening

lol, looks like you've been given some super sweet shoulder mounted rocket launchers. Time to go back to a previous save I'm guessing.

My supply lines stopped working. The map shows them, but I can go to any settlement the only items available will be the ones that are actually there.

Any ideas? I hope I don't have to find all provisioners one by one and re-assign them.

Supply lines only apply to crafting. You can never see items from one settlement to another

I can tell you this game looks great running a 290x on a 3440x1440 (LG 34UM95) with all the settings set to high. The other day I ran into my first Behemoth. Man, what a fight that was. I finally got all my supply lines up and running properly too. Every settlement working like it should. This game at times makes me go WOW! :D

I don't understand. Crafting is done by breaking down junk items. So when I try to craft something the thing needed to craft it just magically appears or how?

If that's so then this system is worse than I thought. I was leaving all kind of loot with any random workshops believing I can retrieve them any time at any one. I always said this whole build settlements thing feels tacked on at the last minute. This just makes me even more sure of that. Stupid me for even trying to use it. I should've just fast traveled back each time to sanctuary and stash everything there.

It might look great, but it probably runs like crap. Unless you're fine with 20 fps at places.

Yep jet packs crafting and modding weapons all feel tacked on makes you wonder what took them so long as all of that was in skyrim already. Also makes one wonder what all they did to the engine to make it run like ass...

Yes designate 1 main base to dump stuff the establish supply lines to build with.

I went a little nuts for my son this Christmas. Needless to say, he was blown away.

all crafting stations use the shared pool, including mods you store somewhere.

the loot you have stashed is somewhat pointless. once you get to level 50/60 and get the armor/science/gunsmith unlocks then there is not much else. the game is easy enough as it is, even on survival mode.

i still loot it to break it down for parts. I have the perk where you get screws, copper and other rare'er materials from scrapping guns/armor.
