FF VII remake?

I too would've liked a more traditional turn-base mechanic. Dragon Quest is still very successful and fun. ARPG is more popular I guess, so that's fine too, I just can't ever seem to get into them unless they give you more control like in Zelda or Dark Souls.

I'll reserve judgement on the final game until after it's released though, it still might be really fun.

I think the big question is: Since it seems like they're taking ques from FF15's combat system, how will that game play when it's out? The demo felt so unfinished that it's hard to judge FF15 based on that. If 15's combat system ends up being bad then we have something to really worry about.

I haven't played any of the new FFs where they moved away from the ATB-style system (FFX was the last one I played, and even it was more turn based than ATB iirc).

I'm hoping FF XII comes out on PSN for Vita. Never had the chance to play it, but reading about it and it sounds really great.

It would be awesome if Square would adopt an approach like Dragon Age for their FF combat. You can still have the more 'action-oriented' mode like what they're going for now, but also dial it back to be more turn based and positional (even mimicking FFT's combat).

FF XII played similar to Dragon Age.

I like the idea of making it a whole new game that's simply based upon the older one. Beats the typical "insert HD textures and 1080p = $60 remake" that is so prevalent.
I'd rather have this be a stinking pile of a new game than yet another retread.

too bad the game is episodic now, what a joke

It's really up in the air exactly what they mean by episodic. There is a lot of conflicting information out there. Some reports say episodic but I've seen other reports that paint it more like the FF13 trilogy. As in, each entry is a full game on it's own with a complete story. The way 7's story works it's not impossible to see how it can be sectioned off into multiple full 30-40+ hour games. Expand the Midgar stuff for part 1 (maybe include some Avalanche stuff before Cloud joins, expand the stories of the side characters). Part 2 could be the dark middle story, ending with the death of Areith. Part 3 could be the rest of the game. I would love if they did something to expand the Cloud-Arieth story. Make them falling in love take longer and make her death feel more tragic. In the original game it really doesn't work well beyond it being a shocking moment.

I'd agree with that, I'd be interested in a sequel to FF VII. I remember how fascinating it was to see Midgar neglected and overgrown with foliage.

A sequel set a few hundred years in the future of the same world would make for a decent setting. I'm sure it'd be easy enough for some explorers to accidentally crack open a vault containing some Jenova cells that would set off a world destroying event needing to be stopped.

Currently an article on Polygon where a Square Enix representative stated that each release will have the content equal to a full sized game. They don't specify what kind of game, mind you. But if it does end up being 40 hours worth of storyline/gameplay packed into one release, huzzah.

They also mentioned that the game will greatly expand Midgar, which is cool. Will provide the article link later if nobody's posted it by the time I get home.

The episodic thing makes it sound like we'll be playing a cinematic movie based on the FF7 story or something. What was great about FF7 was the grinding to beat weapons, Chocobo raising and racing, etc. There was a lot to do in that game.

I wonder how optional bosses will work (or if they'll exist). Say, Emerald Weapon is available in episode 11 "Under the Sea". Am I required to fight him in that episode or can I come back to these previous areas if I waited until episode 18 "Cloud's Coma of Sadness"?

Exactly... The thing about true FF games is that sometimes one misses stuff in the original areas and have to backtrack for an item.

Imagine if FF10 was two parts, how would the ultimate weapon bits go? Would you be flipping between multiple games to go back to the early areas to get weapon parts?

FF7 remake's latest staff interviews

Quick stuff from interviews

-they made multi-release since they would have to cut stuff out if they made it in one game. The detail of the game will be so dense, and you will be able to go to various locations within Midgar that you couldn't go before.
-there will be some stuff that has to be cut, but there will be lots of stuff added. overall volume will be big
-They are working with various companies outside, including CC2
-The battle system is real-time, action feel. The degree of action will be "Dissidia > Kingdom Hearts> FF7 remake" It will be more tactical.
-Although it's action style, it has ATB as well.
-You can control other party members, but you can keep control one if you want
-3 party members at a time like the original

Thanks for clearing that up

I hope it's not like recent "action" RPG where you just stand around auto-attacking/healing, rarely having to do anything. I HATED that aspect of Xenoblade, and I never tried them but I guess FF12/13/14/15/etc... are like that too? God, that'll be disappointing. I hate that MMO-style crap... give me more REAL tactics that actually matter despite whatever level you happened to grind to :(

FF13 was kind of its own thing which will take too long for me to explain. FF12 felt very much like a single player MMORPG. FF11 & 14 are MMORPGs. FF15 is more like Kingdom Hearts, action RPG.

Honestly, this remake is going completely in the wrong direction for me and I would think that is probably the case for many existing fans. And I am usually not so quick to knock things.

The final game will have characters and towns named the same. But little of it will resemble or recall the feeling and direction of the original.

well, that's why this is REMAKE and not remaster
you can always play FF7 HD if you want to experience original
that been said, we should all wait until first one is out before making any judgement

You can call FF7 HD all you want but that dosent change the fact that the pre rendered background assets were not perserved in HD, and they are no where even close to HD resolutions.
