Microsoft has just announced that, starting next year, the company is making Windows 10 a recommended update. Apparently the little nag icon on your task bar just isn't enough.

Our original approach for the Windows 10 roll out included a two-step process: First, reserve, then later, we notify you to start the upgrade process. While over 110 million devices have successfully upgraded to Windows 10, the two-step process is no longer relevant now that we are beyond the preorder phase and Windows 10 is immediately available. In an effort to streamline the process, we will automatically kick off the upgrade process once you have made a reservation. Before the upgrade changes the OS of your device, you will be clearly prompted to choose whether or not to continue. And of course, if you choose to upgrade, then you will have 31 days to roll back to your previous Windows version if you don’t love it.

that sucks. the nag and the bloat and I have one machine that tries to only show Windows 10 as available patches in windows update and now this. gotta change all my machines to not dl anything. Any good solutions for wmc users yet (specifically for watching recorded content without re-encoding)? that is my only real holdup on one or two machines.

Translation: You've been breaking our forced upgrades so we're trying a different approach to shove our new money printing and data mining machine down your throats.

Good thing automatic updates are always disabled on my machine.

It clearly says you have to make a choice once you reserve it. If you do not reserve it, you do not have to make a choice. I am saying this for those who are not capable of reading what it says. Windows 10 is not being forced onto you nor is it automatically being installed. Reading comprehension 101 and all that jaz. :p

Before the knee jerk brigade gets any more momentum, out specifically says you still have to agree to install it. It will not install automatically. Also being this type of upgrade you can now right click and hide the update and never see it. Holy fuck some of you need to read and learn how windows operates.

I don't let Windows connect to the internet anymore and I have updates disabled too. Then again, I really only have to use it once in a great while for some dumb VPN work thingy. Outside of that, Linux does everything I wanna do on a computer and doesn't nag me, spy on me, or decide for me what I should be doing with my computer. :D Oh yeah, and I can totally break it by accident if I don't know what I'm doing which is kinda cool-awesome too.

Not sure if you are serious or not? It clearly says you have to reserve it and then choose if you want to install it or not.

Sure, like all those "Hey, we downloaded this update for you. Install it whenever...." and then the popup screen on MSN that notifies you to upgrade from 7 to 10 which gives you two choices "install now" and "learn more" that won't go away until you click one of the two so you can read a cat pic article. I was okay just ignoring the stuff, but that was totally absurd of them to do that when I'm trying to surf the web.

Also, quoted from the article: "You can specify that you no longer want to receive notifications of the Windows 10 upgrade through the Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 settings pages."

I'll believe it when I see it actually work. Microsoft has already proven itself very untrustworthy with the 10 rollout through behind the scenes downloads of installers never asked for via a torrent on the user's machine and forced upgrades done to computers while people weren't at the keyboard and the system ran automatic updates.

They're trying to make the only reasonable solution to install Windows 10. Basically, they're going to stop patching Windows 7 and 8 and leave you high and dry. Their patch solution will be: upgrade to Windows 10. I'm kinda surprised, this is really aggressive for Microsoft. They normally let people run old versions of their software harassed for years before pulling support. Most software companies try to force everyone onto the new version by pulling support for older ones the second a new one is released.

Early next year, we expect to be re-categorizing Windows 10 as a “Recommended Update”. Depending upon your Windows Update settings, this may cause the upgrade process to automatically initiate on your device. Before the upgrade changes the OS of your device, you will be clearly prompted to choose whether or not to continue. And of course, if you choose to upgrade (our recommendation!), then you will have 31 days to roll back to your previous Windows version if you don’t love it.
In other words: if you have Windows Update set to automatically download and install Recommended updates, it will download the Windows 10 installer and launch it automatically without reservation after the change goes into effect next year. Remember that the "goof" that was widely publicized didn't give you the option to opt-out once the installer launched. If Microsoft came to their senses then you will be able to once this change happens, as they promise in the above quote.

31 Days to roll back? Does that mean I can upgrade my win 7 machine to 10, then roll back and never have to deal with the retarded recommended update that is windows 10 ?

Linux anyone?

Seriously Vulkan is showing many advantages over DX 12.

Lets keep in mind Microsoft wouldn't be able to crow-bar anyone into Win10 without DX12.
With the rest of the world proclaiming "the PC is dead"; Microsoft is becoming that weird uncle that still thinks it is 1958 and won't change his ways.
The server world belongs to *NIX; Microsoft's slice of the computer pie shrinks every year along with their relevancy.

DX12 would NOT be a reality if it was not for AMD shining a spot light on what a dead horse DX was.
They went on to prove it with Mantle, so Microsoft's hand was forced to finally DO SOMETHING with their outdated and inefficient API.
Now they will FORCE you into a bloated OS that few want. (was anyone surprised at this tactic?)

AMD's Mantle is what Vulkan is based on. Since it is cross platform, more developers will be looking at it as the go-to API for compelling graphics.

Wrong but, whatever, you clearly did not read the article or choose to ignore the parts that did not fit the narrative. Oh well, I am done, enjoy the hate train and misinformation boat, toot, toot! :D

I suspect I'll be moving to Win-10 sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sooner or later it will become the default OS and I may as well start learning it. It will be hard to give up Win-7 Pro. It's been my favorite OS to date... by far.

I like windows 7!

I have no need for Windows 10, all the reviews I have read, all the screen shots I have seen of it provide no clear reason to upgrade from Windows 7. Its a "pretty SO"... so I OSX.

Is it more stable than Windows 7? I doubt it, as I have not seen a BSOD or any stability issue in Win 7 for as long as I can remember (in normal operation). The last time I managed to BSOD Windows 7 was while messing with Xen and VGA Passthrough (a very unsupported and experimental thing to do). I doubt windows 10 will handle this experimentation any better...

I feel like MS has really started ramming Windows 10 down peoples throat in a desperate attempt to remain relevant... Yes we still need Microsoft in this world, yes they are a juggernaut... no Linux can not touch windows on the desktop... however it is much more secure (mostly due to the pain it takes to use it for anything but web browsing and some light documenting). Linux has no measurable compatibility with the real applications that a lot of big business use (i.e. CAD).

I would really like to stick to Windows 7... I have a legal copy of it... and no desire to go to Windows 10... I dont need animated jumping tiles full of news I dont care about.

Just a simple Friday rant! :)

I did read it.
  1. The reservation system is still in place, but now the upgrade process will initiate immediately after making a reservation instead of notifying you at a later point.
  2. Windows 10 upgrade notifications that were part of the original reservation system can now be disabled in the "settings" (whatever that means; it doesn't get specific).
  3. The Windows 10 upgrade will be published as an Optional update in Windows Update "soon," so users can initiate the upgrade without the reservation system.
  4. "Early next year," the Windows 10 upgrade will be changed to a "Recommended" update in Windows Update, giving it more visibility and causing it to download and run automatically for users who have not changed the default behavior of Windows Update.
  5. No matter how the upgrade is initiated, it will require user input to continue.
Given that the default setting for Windows Update is to download and install Important and Recommended updates automatically (in Windows 8 and 8.1, at least), my point still stands.

Well, your Linux soapboxing aside - Windows 10 is not as bloated as you seem to make it. Telemetry can be minimized and disabled to a degree, but bloated is a wholly inaccurate statement.

I suspect this will be for the best. Hopefully the growing pains will be minimal. This could actually be a smart idea that'll obviously allow MS to direct their focus one a single OS.

I'm sure there's many things to NOT like about W10, but I personally am going to roll with the punches so to speak.

I wouldn't worry about reasoning it out. MOG has already said he's leaving the thread and his exit post was simply an attempt to keep his ego intact when he already is aware of Windows Update default behaviour. It's a pouty-mad departure that you totally should let him have so he doesn't have to feel like his attack which was driven by emotion more than reason was fended off by rational people.

Unless Microsoft does something, Android is set to overtake Windows as the top operating system for browser connected devices in the world (combined mobile, tablets, desktops) sometime in the future (maybe a decade or so). No other OS is close to Windows or has a trend-line to do so.

If only what Microsoft says = What Microsoft does.

Because if they did, they wouldn't be having to issue "oops we're sorry" statements about machines getting 10 auto installed without permission.

We'll have to wait and see how this actually plays out, but good Microsoft Defense Force effort.

I always wonder - what's the deal with all these people reserving a copy when they don't actually want one?

SMH. You do realize that you can attempt to hide it now but it just keeps coming back, yes? And auto-checked no less.

Why give up 7? it'll be supported til at least 2020.

Don't let life - or a new Spyware OS for that matter - just wash over you like a wave. Before making any change, review what you'd actually be gaining or benefitting. In the case of Windows 10, unfortunately it's not a whole lot. Start Menu? 7 already has it. DX12? Games for it won't arrive in any reasonable numbers until late next year. Phone caliber apps? They're terrible.

Don't get pushed around by corporate marketing agendas.

One of my machine actually started the installer, but yeah just click cancel. Creepy though.

I've started to move to Linux (MINT) and linking it. Might have a VM for windows 8 afterwards.

You guys are funny. Windows 10 works fine and has some snapping improvements for multi-monitor, which I assume most of you have. Those of you who complain about "spying" probably use google services and have a mobile device. Heck, if you're "on the grid" you're watchable.

'While over 110 million devices have successfully upgraded to Windows 10'

I have successfully *not* upgraded to Win 10. And now, I will successfully give MS the middle finger while successfully staying with Win 7 Pro.

This success thing is pretty neat.

I doubt very much they will go back on their published life cycle:

Windows 7 until January 14th 2020, and Windows 8 until January 10th 2023.

Unlike with XP, I wouldn't expect any amount of industru pressure to convince them to extend the EOL date for these though.

So, if you don't like Windows 10, this IS a problem, but it isn't a problem for another 4 - 7 years.

Metaphorically speaking, there is nothing like Microsoft crawling into your car and ripping out your dashboard and steering wheel and putting in their version of what they think it should be (or because they think it will be better for you). Whatever.

Thank god they don't make cars.

Did you miss the part where nothing happens unless you reserve it first? Nothing will be auto-installing unless that happens.

For all of these people who don't want Windows 10 to install - Why the fuck did you reserve it then?

I didn't love it and rolled back...I still get the nagging notifications that my upgrade is ready.

Did you miss all the reports - and Microsoft's own admission - of some machines get auto upgraded anyway, even when people never clicked Yes on the fake reservation system or ever asked for 10? Clearly not.
