Both versions of MGS V coming to Steam.

I need to watch some videos or something...I played through MGS but don't really remember the story that well, and I played some of, but never finished, 2, 3 and 4.

there's like an 11 page quick summary in the Ground Zeroes menu...I doubt it goes into all the details but it hits the main points

I'm sure there is a handily boiled-down version MGS lore on youtube.

I feel REALLY sorry for anyone hopping into this dry. it would be like walking into a conversation on japanese fetish porn and trying to figure out what side you stand on.

That said, I can't wait to play this game. I'm buying a new system JUST in time for it.

You would only need MGS 3 and Peace Walker. MGSV is a prequel to MGS1.

This is the timeline's order -

MGS3, Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes, Phantom Pain, 1, 2, and 4

Finally got a chance and the patience to sit down with Ground Zeroes yesterday and had a blast messing around with it and looking forward to Phantom Pain. Since I've only played MGS 1, 2, and 4 in the past, I'll be picking up the Legacy Collection to play through MGS 3 and Peace Walker for the first time.

Eh, that's the correct chronological order, but that's not the best way to play, because appearances and references of things like Ocelot and Les Enfants Terribles and everything lose their impact in that order IMO. I think numerical/release order is still the best play, as intended.

As a new person coming in that could be a bit overwhelming. Really hard to say until it releases what will be best to play first if you need any. If some of these crazy theories going around be true it may not matter.

Also, 5 is a direct prequel to the 1987 game Metal Gear on the MSX2/NES (though Kojima doesn't like the NES version and its alterations, he only endorses the MSX2 version he made), not Metal Gear Solid.

So the correct canon chronological order would be:

Metal Gear Solid 3 > Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops > Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker > Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes > Metal Gear Solid 5 > Metal Gear > Metal Gear 2 > Metal Gear Solid > Metal Gear Solid 2 > Metal Gear Solid 4

But, IMO the correct play through order is the release order:

Metal Gear > Metal Gear 2 > Metal Gear Solid > Metal Gear Solid 2 > Metal Gear Solid 3 > Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops > Metal Gear Solid 4 > Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker > Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes > Metal Gear Solid 5

As a new person coming in that could be a bit overwhelming.

This is not a series for those it would overwhelm. The La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo told me so.

Revengeance is also canon, and is set after MGS4.

Also, for you guys wanting to catch up, but don't have time to play all the games, metalgearsolid.net has very good synopsis written for each game and theres always the metalgear.wikia.com

But I think the best solution, if one has the means to watch youtube at work, is to search for the "metal gear solid the movie" (add the # of each one you want), and just watch those while you do other stuff.

True, but I didn't include it because it's not part of the Metal Gear Solid storyline, but is canon in the Metal Gear universe. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance would come before Ground Zeroes in release timeline, and after 4 as you said in chronological timeline.

Also, that game is awesome :D

Man, PC gamers get hosed on extras. We don't even get a collector's edition:

*edit* To note: that table is from the main MGSV page

according to that chart PC players don't get to transfer their Ground Zeroes save file?...that's incorrect isn't it?...I hope it's incorrect

That chart is one of my main concerns with MGSV's launch; giving us Ground Zeroes (which many already own) is not a consolation. In addition, our version of Metal Gear Online is at the moment scheduled to launch in January 2016, instead of the coming October...so that's unfortunate.

I personally feel that Konami's handling of pre-orders is repugnant - it shouldn't be necessary to pay for a $59.99 game and need a chart to figure out what pieces of content you get and which you don't. For PC gamers it appears to be even worse as yes, we aren't granted even a chance at a digital "deluxe/collector's" version with the full contingent of included items. Personally, I think that all the digital items should be granted for the base price/pre order - let someone pay more if they want the physical extras, but you should get ALL the digital game content when you pay for your copy!

The only saving grace I can think of is that these "DLC Vouchers" are simply another way to unlock in-game content from the start that can still be earned otherwise. If the DLC linked to the Collector's Edition is in any way exclusive, that's inexcusable (Yes, even if it is cosmetic. Cosmetic content is still content!). Thus far there's no word from Konami on any of this, but I hope there is some development

Edit: We should be able to transfer our save files, last I checked. The chart is a little wonky on this, because it treats Ground Zeroes as a separate title. Those who have Ground Zeroes on the same platform as TPP should be able to transfer. So I saw it discussed on Steam.

I remember when MGSV was still up in the air as to whether or not it was even coming to PC. I cringed at the thought of having to buy a PS4 for the pleasure. I'm just happy to be able to play the game on the PC and in spectacular fashion. Nothing more is of any concern to me regarding this game.

What's supposed to carry over from the GZ save file anyways? I'm guessing some of those prisoners we saved throughout the missions?

It's going to be a little weird playing on PC.
The MGS series has been a Playstation exclusive for as long as I can remember. It even made specific use of the PSX hardware (e.g. switching controller ports during the Psycho Mantis fight).
Then in MGS4 Otacon gave a whole speech on the benefits of the Blu-Ray drive.
Hell, didn't Snake even use a DS3 to control the Metal Gear Mk. II?
It almost feels like I'm cheating by not playing this on the system that brought it to life.
But so be it, I'm sure it will be spectacular on the PC.

MGS 1 and 2 actually came out for PC, though I never played them on PC and understand the ports were not the best. Playing Ground Zeroes on the PC is actually not bad at all with KB+M, I expect The Phantom Pain to improve on it.

PS4 controller + PC = problem solved :p

I ended up using both a controller and KB/M when I played through GZ.
Controller for all the walking around bits due to much better control over where one is going. (controller == Logitech F710)
KB/M for any combat, much better aim that way.

The problem with MGS2 on the PC was that there was no easy way to map all of the controls, since several important functions relied on the analog buttons of the PS2 controller.

Other than that it seemed like it always ran / played well for me.

I wonder if there will be any discount during the holiday sale? I don't want to break my streak of not paying full price for games.

Maybe. Though I highly doubt it will be cheaper than you'd pay buying a Nvidia code off of someone on the forums or Ebay.

it'll follow Steam's usual pattern...first Steam sale 25% off...then 50%...then 75%

This. I picked up a code for $30. It will be a long time before it's cheaper than that in a Steam sale. Next years summer sale at best.

it was announced earlier today that MGS5 will not have a Steam pre-load

Ehg, it's coming out two weeks earlier than anticipated. That's sort of a pre-load :D

It does make you wonder why not though. It certainly is a big enough release to get away with a pre-load and/or an unlock time other than Steam's typical 10AM PST refresh. Does Steam charge for these privileges? I can't imagine another reason why a AAA Steamworks title wouldn't have this.

Because Konami is Konami.

So there is some more information on the release of the game (I'll be adding this to the OP):

You will be able to "pre-order" the game until 10am PDT on September 1st

Anyone that pre-orders will be able to start downloading the game at 12am NZST (New Zealand Standard Time, the first time zone to switch over to a new day) or 5am PDT August 31st (if the time converter I'm using is correct).

People that "pre-order" via Nvidia codes will get all the PC pre-order bonuses except the free copy of Ground Zeroes.

All information comes from the Twitter account of Robert Allen Peeler the Online Community Manager for the MGS franchise.

yup it's a 5 hour head start...so 8:00 AM my time (EST)...sucks that Ground Zeroes won't be included with the Nvidia codes...luckily I bought Ground Zeroes during the last Steam sale for $4.99

I don't think any of the Nvidia codes I've used have come with pre-order bonuses, though I'd have to dig through my purchase history to find out which games I've done that for.

In other news: Spent too much time reworking the entire OP. It should be a heck of a lot better and more informative than the old one.

Somewhat mystifying that a game like this doesn't have a preload. That's going to be a bitch when this hits.
