Android nerd, switched to iPhone 6 Plus

radeon962 curious what you think of the 6 Plus when you get it ?

I'm not saying it's way better than Android, it's just different, and a change of pace for me. And I really appreciate the amazing standby battery life. Jailbreaking allowed me to customize the look of it, plus give me "root" type of features similar to Android, like Widgets, iFile = drag and drop transfer of files, and AdBlocker, Haptic feedback, and theming, etc...

Am I an iSheep now or Apple fan boy all of a sudden ? NO. I predict my next phone will most likely be an Android phone, maybe the HTC One M9 or Galaxy S6 or LG G4, if either one of those has a 5.5" screen, or at least bigger than the 5" they currently have. If they are 5.3" or so, I will jump ship. Especially if they still make GPE versions, not sure that's still around in 2015 ? But if they stick to 5" I will pass. I have come to really appreciate and like the 5.5" screen size, like my OnePlus One and iPhone 6 Plus, to me that's the sweet spot. Where as 5" is too small, and the Nexus 6 @ 6" is too large, I like the middle ground between those.

I just had to lol at this.

But again, this 5.5" screen is just a hair too large for me. But when I play with my old phone, the Galaxy Nexus, and my Wife's international HTC One X, both having a 4.7" screen, they feel very small, and tiny, and hard to use. I think for me, the perfect screen size would be right around 4.9" to 5.1" or so. Not sure I can live daily with this 5.5" beast.

I have found my Galaxy Nexus @ 4.65 to the perfect size, not small, nor too large.

My perfect sized phone would be a 4.5" screen, with super thin bezel wrapping around it.

Isn't the current Galaxy S II the one that's been out a few months a 4.2" screen ? My Nexus-S is 4" and a Tad small for me. I had the EVO 4G with 4.3" screen that is border line too big. I really think the 4.2" is spot on perfect.

At this rate Zorachus will be holding an iPad up to his head in a few years claiming that 10" is the perfect size for a phone :p

LOL you had a lot of free time to dig up those ancient posts :p Those are from two years ago !!! How did you even find those. Back when I had the Note 2, and all other phones at that time were much smaller, as the Note 2 was the only Phablet on the market back then with a 5.5" screen, and most Android phones then being 4/5" / 4.7", and iPhone's even smaller then.

I can tell you though, new 5.5" phones are smaller than the Note 2. Today's 5.5" phones, are narrower, thinner, and lighter. The narrower width being the biggest difference in hand feel.

Note 2 = 151.1 x 80.5 x 9.4 mm. 180grams
LG G3 = 146.3 x 74.6 x 8.9 mm. 149grams
OnePlus One = 152.9 x 75.9 x 8.9 mm. 162grams
iPhone 6 Plus = 158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1 mm. 169grams

Lol it was pretty easy, just search your posts for "perfect" took like 5 minutes. You very much like to proclaim the perfect size for devices. For lulz, you also thought that 8-9mm was the perfect thickness and that the 7mm of the iPhone5 was "too thin". Personally I think what this shows is that despite peoples preconceptions about what size device they want, they really just want the largest device they can reasonably carry. Obviously if the phone wont fit in your purse/pocket it will be a major impediment, but beyond that people tend to get used to and like larger screens. So as long as the phone fits, the larger the better.

It's true, it's been easier to move to larger phone screen sizes as technology (and design knowledge) has advanced. When the first Galaxy Note came out, it was an awkward beast despite a now middling 5.3-inch screen. The thick body and wide aspect ratio just weren't fun. Today, though, you can get a 5.5-inch phone like the G3 that feels downright compact in comparison.

I do think we're running into limits. The Nexus 6 makes really efficient use of space, but it's still something of a beast. We're at the point now where companies are probably better off focusing on elements like battery life and ergonomics than participating in the my-phone-is-bigger-than-yours contests of the past.

Couldn't agree more. 5.5" is a great size and the LG G3 shows that you can fit it in a reasonable physical size.

I'm using a Note 4 now and it is not bad at all size wise. My Nexus 6 was actually too wide and wide enough that I used it with only a skin.

The 6 Plus is a hair narrower than the Note 4 so it should be very similar to my Note 4.

I plan on getting the Google Apps and leaving the rest of iOS as is to see how it works. Should arrive Wednesday so I can give it a good trial over the weekend and then use it as my daily driver next week at the office.

Note 4 battery (on LTE) is only giving me about 4-4.5 hours SOT and about 5.5 hours SOT when on WiFi.

I expected more but more than enough to get me through the day as I charge every night so I'll be curious to see how the 6 Plus compares once I have it setup.

Found a new jailbreak tweak: Dock&Roll. It provides some pretty cool animation/scrolling options for the dock. Until or unless InfiniDock is updated for iOS8, D&R is about all there is to customize the dock.

Back in the day, I said my preferred screen size is 4.5" and 4.7" at the max; this is the length of my thumb movement, 4.7" is barely reachable. Today, I could go for a 5.1" max size screen; but I think that's due to the on-screen soft buttons. So I think I'm pretty consistent in my screen size preference. However, I'd be willing to consider up to 5.5" before I get really negative. The Nexus 6 really is just too big. I want a phone with good ergonomics; I have early signs of carpal tunnel, says the doctor.

I still remember the days when I vowed never, ABSOLUTELY NEVER would I give up the physical keyboard of my superior Blackberry 9900 for something as clumsy and ridiculous as a touch screen phone.

:p

Ah, to be young, and mildly senile. The good old says of opening up a dunkaroos after school and popping open a warcraft themed mountain dew can.

But seriously...coming from a Note 3...the phone size is excellent UNTIL you have to walk around with it in your pocket, or hold it up to your ear. A collapsible phone...that's what we need.

Oh thank God you took the time to look up all of Zorachus' prior proclamations about the "perfect screen size". You saved me the time. LOL. But I was thinking the same thing.

Point is, there is no such thing as a pefect screen size, even for ourselves. Our opinions continually evolve.

Zorachus, I know you're enjoying your Iphone now but I guarantee you will quickly tire of it. There's only so long you can live in that walled garden.

To me, software freedom doesn't matter as much as the real-world kind. Ideally you have both, but I'd rather have an iPhone in my pocket during a political protest than find myself on the sidelines tinkering with a CyanogenMod nightly.

At some levels, I can't disagree based on if you were to be arrested as a political prisoners. Apples has a better record of patching security problems of the iPhone than Google has with android. Apple implemented a better hardware encryption than most if not all Android phones available.

On the other hand, due to its popularity, iPhone hacks are aplenty. It doesn't hold as much easily/cheaply transferable data easily. And Eric Snowden says no to iPhone; but he also didn't say yes to Android either.

Get a Linux tablet with some sort of wireless connectivity, a camera, and a dumbphone if you expect yourself to be a political prisoner.

Z, I may be joining the flock.

Had my iPhone 6+ since Wednesday and early impressions are very good.

I'm going back and forth right now between an iPhone 6+ and Note 4 after selling my Oneplus One.

Took a short detour with a Nexus 6 but it was too wide for me and battery life was very marginal.

Big thing I have found is the iPhone 6 Plus actually runs Google Apps better than an Android phone. I did not realize that you can run nearly all Google Apps now on an iPhone. I even have Google Now, Google Music and Google Movies installed.

I can even leave location services on and it has a minimal impact on battery unlike on the Note.

IPhone 6 Plus has the camera figured out as it really is point and shoot and you get great pictures. Note 4 takes great pictures as well it's just nowhere near as quick or as easy to get a good picture.

Battery life on iPhone is as good if not better than the OnePlus One. Note 4 is just OK.

Standby on the iPhone is outstanding as it really does not lose any battery life. For comparison, from 12 am to 7 am the IPhone went from 94% and was still at 94% when I picked it up in the morning. The Note started at 84% and was at 76% not too bad but my SIM card was in the IPhone and no SIM in the Note and both were on WiFi.

Screen really is much better on Note 4. There is a difference and it is noticeable. Note is set to Basic screen mode so it is more true to life colors and not so saturated.

In hand feel has to go the iPhone even though it's taller. It is not as wide as the Note so it is easier to hold. I do have the Apple leather case on it and Samsung and the others need to copy it as it may be the best feeling case I have owned.

I'm just running stock now to see how it goes.

I'll see how it goes as a daily driver for the next week or so.

Let my son play an extended session of Minecraft to see how the battery goes and it takes it in stride.

Sorry about the crappy pictures but best I can do with poor indoor lighting and an old point and shoot camera.

radeon962, great post. Yeah I have to admit I like my 6 Plus WAY MORE than my Nexus 6, and I am NOT an iPhone guy.

The battery life on this beast is AMAZING. Standby time lasts forever. I thought my OnePlus one was the smartphone battery champ, nope, the JB 6 Plus takes that crown with ease.

interesting. I tried Android and had to go back to an iPhone. I didn't like Android bloat ware. I also found the hardware to be more buggy (at least with motorola). For example, bluetooth streaming would skip and stop and the wifi range was terrible versus my old iphone 5 and my newer iphone 6.

I haven't really gotten into jailbreaking but I may have to try it

Love the look of your setup. I realize you had to jailbreak it to do it but what steps did you have take after that. The screen of icons is getting to me already.

I have to say that I really really love this thread. I've been saying it for years that I hate fanboys and haters alike. I love how you guys are showing folks on this site (mostly android enthusiasts who hate Apple because Apple) that iPhones are not that bad especially if you're someone who roots Androids.

I had a concern in the past that I'm too tied into the Google ecosystems that I probably can't leave Android. I've already tried WP, and that didn't work out at all. But Apple does have all the Google Apps. So what's keeping me from iPhones is I just simply hate iTunes (yes, I also hate crappy software and products that actually deserve to be hated upon). I will not install that junk on my PC. If I buy a Mac or more likely a MacBook in the future, I'll consider it only because it's already pre-installed. But I think I'm sticking to Surfaces.

So question: does jailbreaking does allow me to leave iTunes completely off my computer? If it does and this next generation phones don't impress me, I might go for an iPhone myself. I hate not having accessories!

I don't use iTunes at all with my iPhone 6. It isn't even installed on my PC.

What programs/apps are you using to do file transfers without iTunes? I've tried PwnTunes, iFunBox, iMazing, but none are truly outstanding.

I may jailbreak my iPhone 6 and try to get mine to look like this. Looks great

iFile is the most popular. That's a paid Jailbreak app.
Wow, I've been using iFile for years, but didn't know it could transfer files between phone and computer. I've just used it to dig into and manage my phone's file system.

Surf that Macrumors forum, specifically the iOS section / Jailbreak. Read up on the dozen or so good threads. Register and post threads with questions, you'll get good answers and help. Seems like same cool cats there as here on the [H] :)

Jailbreaking 8.1.2 is just a few buttons to click. Takes all of two minutes, it's a hundred times easier than Rooting Android. And then you get the ' Cydia ' app, which is where you find all the tweaks to download.

You need to add the "repo" addresses in Cydia for all the different tweaks and apps to download.

YouTube videos help a lot too. Just seach ' best iOS 8 Jailbreak themes ' in YouTube and llook up the ones only for iOS 8 that are from Nov to Jan. you'll find a ton of info and how to guides.

I felt the same way but I have not had to use iTunes yet. I set my phone up as a new iPhone and downloaded what I needed from the app store.

I am all stock, not jailbroken yet. I'll hook up to iTunes to make a backup as it's already installed and used by my kids. I'll just create my backup in iCloud.

How Google has not developed a full backup solution like Apples backup is beyond me. When I bought iPhone 5s phones for my daughter's all I had to do was backup their old iPhone 4s and then restore the 5s from the backup and everything moved over. It's incredibly efficient and easy.

I purchased an app (Photo Transfer App) for moving pictures to/from the iPhone over WiFi. Moving to a computer is not a problem as you can plug it in and drag from the phone and drop in the PC. Not so easy to go from PC to iPhone but the app does it seamlessly.

I use Google Play Music and Google Play Movies that I had purchased while on Android and they work flawlessly as they are just pulled from Google. My movies even start from where I left off while watching on my Android device.

Google contacts, calendar, etc. Moved over and synced with no issue. Added my work exchange account and contacts and calendar also synced seamlessly. Yahoo mail obviously was not an issue.

I have not tried moving regular files to/from the phone as its not something I routinely do so I'll deal with that if and when I need to.

I think a lot of Android users look at Apple from a few years back when Google Apps were not available, iTunes was almost mandatory and there was a big difference between the two.

I really have had to expend minimal effort in switching between the two. I am beyond impressed with how smooth the 6+ is and the battery life almost puts the OnePlus One to shame.

It will take something special from Android to bring me back.

What programs/apps are you using to do file transfers without iTunes? I've tried PwnTunes, iFunBox, iMazing, but none are truly outstanding.

I don't find myself needing to do file transfers. I stream all my music + videos, I pay $1/month for a 20GB iCloud account to backup my data, and I pass around files through various apps if I need to copy a document to a PDF or something like that.

Forgot to mention that I also downloaded SwiftKey and swype is alive and well on the IPhone.
Slight issue with keyboard sticking as default in some apps but overall still works very well on the IPhone.

I was helping a friend who broke his screen and got a replacement via insurance to back up and restore his phone data to the new phone.

This is trivial on iPhone - backup to local or iCloud using iTunes, restore - 1 click takes care of everything possible.

On Android its a nightmare - Google restore will do it for some apps. We tried to use MyBackupPro which I use personally, but he had 200+ apps and it crashed. Then he tried Titanium but it needs root, which we was trying to do using towelroot/safestrap. It still didn't work properly and in Android, there's no real way to restore every single thing anyway.

People have been asking for this functionality forever, the response from Android geeks is usually 'do a nandroid/titanium' as if that's comparable at all.

That's something I haven't thought about much, but is arguably very important. You can kinda-sorta back up on Android without rooting, but it's incomplete -- really more of a curated app download list. On iPhones? You can bring the device almost exactly back to where it was with a few simple steps, even if you never synced with a computer. There's a certain freedom to having that safety net... you're effectively picking up right where you left off.

I like the contrast between the 3rd one (dark wallpaper) and your icon set and iWidget. A black-ish wallpaper would look even better.

Some rambling observations comparing my Note 4 vs the iPhone 6 Plus and in my opinion where the Note 4/Android is better and where iPhone 6 Plus/iOS is better:

Battery/Standby - 6+

Keyboard - n4 - iOS wants to keeps switching even when default is set to SwiftKey

Screen-n4 (actually the best screen I have owned on a smartphone)

Operation - 6+

Cut/copy/paste - android - just easier

Email - 6+ smoother moving between Yahoo/Gmail/Exchange

Web browsing - n4

Build/feel - 6+ - width - spigen ultra thin - leather case is spectacular

Camera - 6+ - no fuss - open, press, good pictures

Watching Movies - n4

Apps - draw

Connect to win 7 - 6+ (Android MTP device van be frustrating and downloading and installing drivers)

Backup - 6+ (really how can it be so simple on iOS and so bad and incomplete on Android. Google settings come back simply and quickly but using Helium and the other parts to try and get back was such a mess I have up and would just setup new phones from scratch)

Fingerprint - 6+ (it works flawlessly on iPhone but not so much on the Note)

Customizable- n4 (easy, even with stock TW)

Screen protector glass - both suck rounded edges ( waiting on Bodyguardz Crown)

Accessories- 6+ - Apple will always win

Multitasking - n4 by landslide

Google apps - 6+ (no lag, just unbelievably good)

6+ - everything on - location, background sync, push, Google now on

N4 - everything off, 15 min sync, Google now off

Scrolling in chrome - n4 - if you want to go to bottom of page just scroll to the bottom - 6+ stops as you move

Back button - n4 - in app vs on screen - chrome iOS has back button upper left

Installing/updating apps - n4 - I've always been amazed at how fast Google apps install/update

Web ads - 6+ seems to blocks more

Touch screen sensitivity /accuracy - 6+ easily

They are both great devices but the iPhone is a much smoother operating phone, feels better in hand with much better battery life and a camera that is pretty much stupid proof.

Note 4 has the best screen I have ever owned, is easier to customize how you want it to look and is a great device for surfing the Web or watching movies.

In the end the battery life, smoothness of day-to-day use, the ability to run Google Apps and the camera have me sold on the iPhone 6 for the time being.

which winterboard theme are you using? Or am I a moron and it's called "to the moon"?

minimal ios

I think is the name of the icons. The wallpaper is just some wallpaoer I found.

The weather widget is called " Stripe ". It's an iWidget so you need to have iWidget installed first.
