finally got around to installing the Tech Preview this weekend...definitely something I could see myself 'upgrading' to...huge improvement over Windows 8 which I skipped...I still prefer Windows 7 overall but with all the under the hood improvements with 8.1 and 10 I might make the switch

probably already been discussed in this thread but how do I remove the 'Search' and 'Task View' icons from the taskbar?...I looked online and there was a way to remove it earlier but I don't see those options on my system...did MS get rid of the option to remove them with a recent patch?

In the latest build, right click on the taskbar, there are toggle options for both of them now.

thanks...I thought I was running the latest build but apparently not...I thought Windows Update would automatically install the latest build when you install the Preview but apparently I need to go into 'Update and Recovery' and manually download the new build..
 
Windows Update can only patch the current build, it can't move you to a new build (that requires an in-place upgrade).

This is totally normal for moving from one build of Windows to the next, though consumers usually only see the process take place when moving between retail releases (eg, build 6000 to build 7600).
 
just updated to build 9879...don't know why I couldn't update directly from 9841 to 9879...instead I had to download and install 9860 first then run the 'Update and Recovery' tool again and install 9879
 
I'm starting to spend a lot of time with it in a virtual machine. like others have said, this is a release I *could* upgrade to since I don't have Metro shoved down my throat. I do like that I can mix/match desktop and metro apps, though.

One feature I liked is that when I went to install the Zune desktop software, it noticed automagically that my system was missing an older version of the .NET runtime needed by Zune and went ahead and downloaded and installed it for me. It was a behind-the-scenes kind of thing that made the Zune installer not fail.
 
anyone know a way to remove those 2 useless big icons next to the start menu?

I dont need a specific icon to search, the other icon is also of no use to me.

Also how to add run to the start menu?

Sadly this start menu seems worse than using either startisback or classic shell in windows 8.
 
They can be removed in the most recent build.

To add Run to the Start Screen/Menu, just search for "run", right click it and pin it to Start. Or just, you know, do Win + "run" all the time.
 
ahh ok I see, thanks, I guess now also need to read more to see how I get the new build.

Now my win10 rig has my 830 ssd and wow its fast, so now its on a real rig with an ssd so I can fairly assess performance.

The current issues I am observing.

cannot remove the 2 icons next to start menu - fixed in new build
if I resize taskbar on reboot it resets to one row
cannot add run to start menu
in task manager cannot set cpu history to show each core separately (option is greyed out)
cannot disable auto windows update - apparently this is due to it been a technical preview?
cannot set number of lines to scroll with mouse wheel in control panel (confirmed I can adjust by editing registry)
task manager reports wrong dimm speed - seems to report default manufacturer speed instead of live speed

Right-click the taskbar and uncheck "Show Task View button" and "Show Search button"

Open the start menu, type "Run" into the search box. Right-click on the "Run" icon that appears in the results and select "pin to start"

You can then resize / re-arrange the newly pinned tile.

Where do I start?

on windows 7 start menu the following are on the right side of menu.

Run (optional)
admin tools
optional links to control panel, docs, pics etc.

On win10 these are all gone replaced with live tiles.

This has caused a very obvious regression, the items lost are either removed, or are forced to the left side making the left part of the start menu too cramped and ultimatel not enough room for everything, I thought this was immediatly obvious personally.

The problem is microsoft want to change the GUI for the sake of change so things just "look different" and to excite those people who get excited over UI changes. They also still after all these years do not recognise choice is king.

The most obvious way to fix this is to simply add an option to choose between a metro start menu or win7 start menu = solved.

At least they added an option to remove those two useless buttons next to the start menu.

In all seriousness, have you tried the Windows 10 Tech preview yet? All those items on the right side are removable and you can place anything there that you want. It is much better than the Windows 7 start menu since it can be customized to what you want there. Hope that helps. :)

This is pre-alpha software. This is not final software. Microsoft is currently taking feedback through the Insider program. If you have feedback, that is the channel to use. Complaining here will not do anything for you.

Also, I strongly suggest you get comfortable with launching things via Start Search. Enormously long lists of things was what we had in 1998, but this is no longer 1998. Press the Start key on your keyboard and start typing the name of the thing you want. It's usually the fastest method that imposes the least cognitive burden, and has been available since Vista.

obviously I have tried it hence my comments.

Please tell me how to readd the things removed from the windows 7 start menu to the right side, as I see no such option to do that.

I dont want to pin run to the top on the left side, I want it in the same place as it is on win7.

To prove you not all talk please explain how to do what you just said, to me the right side seems reserved for metro stuff.

how do I send feedback there?

and there is nothing wrong with voicing my opinions here.

Also many people still use a mouse to load things, I am one of them, I tend to rest my left hand whilst using the mouse with the right, I do not want the chore of having to type apps I want in a search box.

Post anything you like and ignore the 2 or 3 Microsoft defense force posters in here. They'd rather just call you a hater than help. If you don't do it their way then its not the right way. Its fun watching them post.

I don't care what he posts: I'm just telling him that posting it here won't change anything. That's what submitting feedback to Microsoft is for. When he joined the Insider program, this was all explained to him.

Posting here never changes anything but that sure doesn't stop anybody...maybe somebody has an answer before submitting that feedback that I'm sure will be read by multiple important people.

How do you update to the newest build? I seem to hit a roadblock with that
I currently have build 9841 (What is the newest build?) I am currently using a Microsoft account that is also linked to my Asus Ultrabook (I think it still synced settings even though I told it to setup as a "new" PC) The 8.1 installation has the user folder locations changed to another partition (Which I heard is a problem in the Windows 10 Tech Preview) Anyway when I go into PC settings (The modern app) I will get the spinning circle and then it will freeze and reopen to the main screen. Also explorer keeps crashing
I installed using a USB flash drive using Universal USB Installer
Is there an "Official" way to make a bootable USB for the tech preview? as I think I installed in wrong.

I want to try again
Is the best way to just burn the ISO to a DVD? or try again to copy it to the USB Flash drive?

Rufus works rather well for making bootable usb's. Its just a one ISO per drive deal though, not like YUMI/Penddrivelinux.

Win10 is mostly working fine for me and I installed via usb using that. Only problem I'm having is a weird memory error on shutdown.

Win+R is run.
Or, you know, do what they say. Search for run > pin to start.
This isn't windows 7. Expecting it to be windows 7 isn't going to work out well for you. If you want windows 7, use windows 7. Its a perfectly good OS. Me? I just like the improved file copy boxes. ;)
 
build 9879 bugged out on me after installing the latest WHQL Nvidia driver...screen started flashing and wouldn't stop...when I installed all my drivers and programs in 9841 and then used the Recovery Tool to upgrade to 9879 everything worked fine but going directly from 9841 to 9879 without installing any other programs it went bonkers...my USB floppy drive is not recognized and neither is my Auzentech X-Fi Prelude sound card (I had to switch to onboard sound)

I read that MS isn't planning on releasing any new builds until early 2015
 
That would surprise me. I mean, why would they slow their iteration time on new builds?

right so next time dont make claims it is more customisable when it is not.

shortcut keys and pinning are not adequate substitutes.

You just described an improvement.

Windows 7 has a predefined list of items you can add/remove from the right-hand pane of the Start Menu. There's barely any customization at all.

Windows 10 lets you pin ANYTHING you want (all the options you could have previously, and more) in that pane, and you can rearrange them to suite your personal preference.

Everything about this is better, not worse...

I'm not understanding your issue. Nothing was lost or removed. Everything that was an option for the right-hand pane in the Windows 7 start menu is still pin-able in Windows 10.

Not seeing a regression here. If anything, it's an all-around improvement.

Looks to me like they want to change the GUI for the sake of functionality and choice. The Windows 10 start menu offers far more choice and customization than the Windows 7 start menu...

The Windows 10 start menu is already EXTREMELY close to the Windows 7 start menu, except for the fact that you can pin anything you want to the right-hand side (as apposed to Windows 7, which enforced rigid restrictions on what was available there).

Why would you want an option that makes the start menu more rigid?
 
Just to drive the point home, here's the Windows 10 start menu configured to match the Windows 7 start menu (I even threw Run on there). Do a clean install of Windows 7, and you'll have exactly the same start menu entries in the right-hand pane.

This is just one example. You could configure, resize, pin/un-pin, and re-arrange this until you were happy with it.

The right side of the 10 Start Menu is definitely more configurable than 7 however people are going to complain about it being tiles. I have sent in feedback suggesting the ability to use conventional links or a tile type that looks like a conventional link. Basically an irrelevant matter but just to keep some of the more hardcore "has to be just the 7" folks happy.

However 9860 has been showing some weird signs to me on two different machines. When they come out of sleep mode, explorer (taskbar) closes and reopens multiple times. It takes a few minutes before it settles down and becomes usable.

This also causes all open windows to shift to the main display.


I've also had a few Creative driver issues where certain games will cause the audio/video playback to do a short pause (.25 to .5 second) every 10 seconds after the game has been closed. Reboot fixes the issue. But it is annoying.

I wish MS would take a slightly different approach to their releases - instead of "Fast" and "Slow" development channels, the open-source community usually uses "Stable", "Developmental", and "Experimental". I think "Stable" and "Development" channels would be better suited. Stable would be a build that users have considered to be crash free. Development would be the fast lane, seat of your pants, let's crash this f-er.

Windows 8.1 is "Stable", this pre-release software is "development", and internal builds are "experimental".
 
Is there a way to manage C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu from the GUI?

That's the Windows 7 "pinned" area but I don't see a way to edit it on Windows 10.

I am sure it was directed at me and coming from you, that is a badge of honor. :) :D :cool: There are right ways and wrong ways to do things on a computer, but there are also multiple ways to achieve the same results many times.

Computers are a logic based device, point a to point b. Therefore, complaining in and of itself that something is not a certain way is not going to help anything. We explained that anything can be pinned to the right side regardless of how a person wants to see that side of the start menu.

Also, did you bother helping him? No? Thought so.
