(thanks to Videocardz.com)

A big picture teasing the number "10" over a new video card was posted on September 7th... maybe we'll be seeing a September 17th launch then, followed up on the 18th by the game24 event? It almost makes sense because nvidia's game24 "big moments countdown" ends with the 16th being the last day... so 17th they could launch, then 18th have their big shows.

RUMOR:

Cards in reviewers' hands:

Forum translated says that he is working on his review now and it is a review sample... device ID begins with 13 from the new drivers for the 970 and lists 1664 cores. 13 SMM's * 128 cores per SMM = 1644, so it adds up.

The new device ID from public drivers matches as well for this 970. The 980 has ones beginning with 16 and 17 which would presumably mean 16 or 17 SMM's * 128 = 2176 or 2048 cores!? Wowza.

This matches the older leaks from coolaler.

Device ID NVIDIA_DEV.17C2 = "NVIDIA Graphics Device" is in drivers as well as one DEV.13C2 which matches this picture. This lends credence to a 17 SMM 980 part.

No surprise, really. I can't find the link right now, but I believe NVIDIA themselves said that the cards would be on store shelves on the same day it was launched (which we know is happening sometime between the 17th-19th).

Can't wait for the [H] review :D.

No doubt this would be decent upgrade from my GTX 680, i just wish i had some self control this time to wait for the big daddy to arrive before buying 980. But if this thing really has 2176 cores and is efficient as they say it is and running cool, it's going to be hard to resist. Cant wait for somebody to leak some real benchmarks.

These shader counts are disappointing.

2048 or 2176 would be incredibly good actually for a GTX 980. The GTX 970 count does seem low but maybe it'll be $350-370 instead of 400, and then the 980 will remain as 500?

I see myself buying another cheap used 780 until the "big maxwell" shows up.

GTX 680 launched 2.5 years ago with 1536 shaders. 2048 shaders on a GTX 980 with a similar 256-bit GDDR5 bus is anything but "incredibly good" historically speaking.

Someone doesn't understand chip architecture.

It also used different shaders so that's not making a 1:1 comparison.

As well as Maxwell having over 8 times the L2 cache per unit which reduces scheduler requests to memory and improves the efficiency of the overall frontend.

Sure it's not a perfect 1:1 comparison, but realistically very little has changed in the shader architecture that significantly affects performance per shader per clock (outside of the loss of hot-clocks after Fermi) since G80. Number of shaders + clock speed remains a fairly consistent comparison of GPU performance between the generations and Maxwell doesn't seem to significantly change that. You can call 2048 Maxwell shaders "incredibly good" for this new generation and tell me that I don't understand chip architecture but you're only lying to yourself.

With 2048 shaders at around 1GHz and a 256-bit GDDR5 bus this will not be the significant generation change that we're used to seeing like the jumps from G80-GT200-GF100-GK104.

970 should be neck to neck with 780 at $399 price range and 980 should be neck to neck with 780ti at $499 price range.

I think that will be impressive if you ask me.

nobody was saying that 970/980 will take huge jumps after it was confirmed to be 28nm way back in time.

this is all about lower price, and better efficiency at lower power, if you already have a 780/780ti then this is not an upgrade for you.

once 20nm rolls out it will be then where you can have a case against NVidia if performance doesn't exceed that of 780ti by 50% or more.

Ouch, been seeing 780s offloaded around $350 and 780ti for $400-$500. Once the 980 drops and price is confirmed, more used gpu sales are going to pop up!

which I find pointless if you ask me, some people just enjoy having the latest stuff even if more performance is not on the table, but if I owned a 780 or 780ti there is no way I would sell them just to buy a 970 or 980.

970 and 980 imo are really for those who couldn't not afford a 780/780ti.

900? Guess I've been living under a rock lately. I didn't know they we're skipping the 800's like they did the 300's. I don't get why they do that. Oh well it's still a better numbering scheme than AMD's.

The nice part is most people offload their current cards to cover much of the new cost of the cards

Just to answer, it has to do with OEMs pressure to present a "new" product each year and re-badging (usually in the mobile line) making the product line look out of sync unless they jump numbers.

Both AMD and nV have done this recently to the sole benefit of people who try to sell laptops to people who think higher numbers = moar powah.

Witcher 3 certified or will Nvidia be releasing another high end card before February 2015?

In for 2 on day 1. Now what to do with my pair of 680s.

I will redo my rig too. I've got the spare cash so what the hell. I'm going all in once they release.

Yup, it has always served me well and has usually made some other gamers really happy, too. I usually price my old cards to move ($200'ish) and everyone wins.

Wouldn't be surprised if we see a Titan II early next year.
I heard enthusiast-level 1H '15, probably meaning a TITAN-successor and/or 980 Ti anytime between January - June. There is also speculation of a proper consumer-level dual-GPU 990 this time next year.

so what does this mean for pricing of the 780 and 780 Ti cards?...getting a 780 for a great price might be my move over getting a 980 (knowing that it's not the true high end part)...if the 980 is 20mn (unlikely) then it would make it more worth it over a 780

Retail price drops are not likely beyond what we're already seeing as stock is likely dwindling anyway (Newegg has listed some Tis for ~$589). You may be able to get some cards cheap used though.

If prices and performance is roughly the same for 970 and standard 780, wouldn't it make more sense to go with the 970 for the power efficiency and other things like DX12 support?

what ?

the specs based on rumors are incredibly disappointing, first 256bus and now this; if true

and stop with the low power crap, its a freaking gamer card

Definitely not a Titan successor in 1H '15. They need 16FinFet for that and we would be lucky to see it by Q4 '15.

I'm expecting a quick shrink of GM204 to 16FinFet in 1H '15 to try and fight against Fiji.

Yeah, well, it is my opinion that your opinion sucks and is hands down the worst post I've seen today, stuff that elitist bullshit.

You know, there MIGHT be some of us out here that do not currently have rigs and are getting ready to build and the 980/970 will be a killer buy for the performance you will be getting at a big savings in the power department.

Also, double negative...(couldn't not)...

Maxwell cores are stronger than kepler cores, fyi. 15% rumored boost over the 780ti (980), while consuming less power is impressive.

What I can afford, and what I'm actually willing to spend on any particular component are two very different things.
