Dark Souls 2 PC - April 25, 2014

How do you walk/sneak with the keyboard? Shift+wasd?

I've never used the 'Walk' function in the game...the Run and Dash keys are the only ones I use for movement...sneak?...there is no sneaking...it's not Elder Scrolls where sneaking is a fundamental part of the gameplay...there's nobody to pickpocket here

I'm currently using my SSD to play Watch Dogs so I don't have DS2 installed on this drive...maybe I'm forgetting something but I never recall needing to use 'Walk'

movement speed and gear types affect the amount of noise you make. Useful for certain PVP scenarios as well as-----sneaking up on PVE enemies for back stabs.

Aaight, thanks everyone!
I got the game. Will try it hopefully soon. I might report back here if I need some advice or if I need to know about some good addons/scripts.

Cheers!

what's the point of walking? DS2 does not allow you to sneak up for backstabs

Yes it does...doesn't it? For instance if there's an enemy not facing you - if you go charging right at them, they seem to "hear" you and turn around. However if you slowly approach, you can usually land a backstab or at least a few hits to their side.
It's not like a TES game or anything like that, but it's definitely there and useful at times.

Yes, there is definitely sneaking for backstabs  There are definitely fewer opportunities to backstab vs the first game, due to enemy placement and fewer ways to enter each level, but it does happen.

Hate .. HATE this ancient dragon. Insta kill I can take, but 100% insta kill ASAP every time is kinda annoying.

Do you know about the "between the toes" trick? That fight is a complete hassle otherwise.
Charge at his back legs and get between his middle toe and the one closest to his body. Get as close as you can (touching him) and STAY THERE. You might have to move with him as he does shift a little bit. You should have time to hit him 2-3 times. After a few seconds he'll raise his foot to stomp on you. Run to the other foot and do the same thing. You don't even have to roll - just run over there when he raises his foot. He'll just keep doing that over and over again. The only thing you have to be aware of is not to get too greedy. Hit him 2-3 (maybe 4 with a fast weapon) times and remain between those toes and as close as you can get.

you can also put on gowers ring. it is heavy (15lbs) but will allow you to make one mistake

pre-release the developers talked a lot about how they are going to make major changes to backstabbing but I only saw this implemented a couple of times throughout the game...it's really only those turtle guys that use counter-moves to prevent backstabs...other then that it's pretty much the same as DS1...seems like even more bosses are able to be backstabbed as well in this

it's like the developers wanted to implement this feature more prominently throughout the game but then changed their minds or ran out of time

The big changes for backstabbing are:

1. that the window is generally tighter. You have to deliberately go for backstabs now, or get lucky, for the most part. There are a lot less instances of seemingly random backstabs, compared to DS1.

2. At the beginning of the bacstab animation, you can be "knocked" out of it, if the opponent does another attack or if a buddy attacks you. Whereas in DS1, the window was wide enough to backstab by just running behind someone and once the animation started, it was pretty much locked in, with no way for an enemy to cancel it out. Additionally, different weapons have slightly different windows and startup animations, which add small variations to all of this.

3. backstabbing no longer makes you invincible for the duration of the animation.

oh that's brutal!

AGI does affect your iFrames during backstabs, though. With 120 AGI (cap), you'll be invincible for most of a backstab animation. 120 AGI nets you 16 invincible frames.

Hitting that cap takes a bit of work, to be sure.

I left my agility at 100 and it's pretty rare that I got hit out of a backstab. I think it only happened maybe once or twice...although it isn't that often that you land a backstab and there are other enemies around to hit you, too. Plus, it seemed like at least some of their shots full-on pass through you.

I think it happened to me in the Amana's Shrine area where those knights haul ass at you.

AGI is going to be more beneficial for rolling than backstabs. Especially with the phantom range on a few weapons...

Ha, I totally owned some rapist tonight. Immediately after he invaded me, I ran to the bonfire, removed all my gear, and stood perfectly still.

....so you waited patiently for the rapist naked by the fire?

I really don't know what this game is anymore.

I know they want a fight, they want that feeling of forcing themselves onto someone else, to go where they are not wanted, to invade someones personal space, to dominate and subjugate someone. These people generally have mental issues and feelings of unworthiness in real life so they assault others. I do what I can to remove the motivations.

Or they just like PVP.

There's a big difference between pvp and rape. Just like there's a difference between sex and rape...

Just like there is a big difference between playing video games and rape. Because one is a video game, and the other is rape.

I'm really confused. I don't think anyone is looking to "rape" anyone in Dark Souls but there are some folks that are clearly looking to be a bit of a dick. Being a dick is well...being a dick, but it's a long way from rape.

I don't know about that. All of my PVP experiences in Dark Souls 1 I'd definitely classify as rape.

Definition of rape: an act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse; despoliation; violation

Just because it's virtual, does not mean it's without harm to another human.

so standing naked in front of the bonfire will lessen the 'rape' chances??

there's no such thing as virtual rape...to equate pvp to rape is silly

No it doesn't lessen the chances, it removes the motivation, i.e. they don't get what they desire.

You seem to be under the impression that consensual and non-consensual are the same thing.

Well, based on that definition i don't see any reason you can't be raped in a video game =P

And you know the saying, "you can't rape the willing," i figure that if you're naked and waiting, then it's no longer rape ^_^

since it appears you are serious I will say that rape equals a sexual assault...in gaming it can never be rape unless those standards are met...so when you say standing naked in front of the bonfire removes their motivation you are saying that you are not giving the invader the fight they desire therefore they fail...it's technically not rape but more assault

me personally if I see an invader by the bonfire naked I will attack them the same way and not consider it less of a win...not fighting back takes away some of the thrill of a victory but I'll take it over a loss...I have shown mercy to invadees when it was clear they were trying to advance in the single player game but not for people that just stand around waiting to be killed
