The [H]ardForum Perpetual Freebies Thread

I might have a use for one of them :) gonna try and get some details out of my friend tomorrow as to exactly why he thinks it's toast...

Just called my friend (actually someone who works for him) -- this board is fit for scrap only. This is the system they'd been telling me a good yarn about... I'd nicknamed the system "sparky" without ever seeing it, which is why I didn't realize that this one was it.

Seems the box had a power surge in its past. A surge that got past the componentry supposed to block it. Something on the motherboard is internally shorted out, and the system will spit two-inch sparks at you when you plug it in... until the PSU dies shortly thereafter. The fellow I talked to is the one that worked on it and he went over that board with basically a low-power LCD microscope that he threw together... the short isn't in a trace, it's internal to a component. One of the chips on the board is shorted out inside.

To fix that, you'd have to find a way to check every single chip and multi-lead part (down to the SMT transistors!) on that board for an internal short. Meaning you'd need to find pinouts and supply parameters for each and every part, apply the proper power to the proper pins, and see if it smoked something. When you consider that the larger chips are BGA... you'd have to literally pull them off the board to test them (at which point you might as well replace them, which stands a very high chance of killing any board, assuming it's not dead already...). Remember, BGA = Ball Grid Array -- you cannot get to the leads on those parts without removing them; the leads are entirely under the chip package itself. Hope you've got a homemade reflow oven... ;)

kakureru, if you *really* want a motherboard that kills PSUs with mild pyrotechnic effects, I'll give it to you for cost of shipping... but I have to say you're one desperate fella if you do :p this is one where I actually wouldn't feel bad handing a part to the eWaste folks... trying to salvage that board is simply not worth the effort.

May be eating my words on that board... think I found the busted chip. There's this one spot on the Ethernet controller that looks darker than it should... ;)

I'll know more on Friday.

In the meantime, I'm looking for a USB cable or dock compatible with my 2nd Gen 1gb iPod Shuffle. The cable I have (or so I suspect) is shot -- the iPod won't stay connected. It's a cheapo eBay cable anyways. Ideally I'd like the actual Apple dock for this thing -- but I'll take what I can get ;)

...and yes, I know I can get another cheapass cable on eBay for cost of shipping -- better to give my money away [H]ere than there, IMO ;)

I have one make me an offer**EDIT below**
I don't have that realized its different from the nano's or iphones

well from my experience, whenever some one sais "powersurge" its not because allot of other crap would be blown on the same circuit. it was likely overheated.

Some things have good protection. Some things don't.

A lightning strike sometimes cares. Sometimes doesn't. Depends on a lot of different factors ;)

I'm late on this again. Could always use the unit's case for something.

Maybe, but it'll require some significant dremeling, which I'm hoping to avoid ;) ASUS made this bugger as proprietary as they could... >.<

Anyone need a new HTC 8X Holster? My 8x phone broke so now I have a Lumia 925 and the holster is no longer of any use for me. Just pay shipping and it is yours.

I have a pair of cheap Chinese not-from-a-fruit-company earbuds ;) came with a package that was supposed to have an MP3 player in it... whoopsie, someone got a free $7.77 MP3 player  first time for everything, I guess.

I've actually got a second pair (from a prior player purchase) if I can find it, just like these, and I'll have pair #3 when the replacement MP3 player arrives...

...geez, I'm practically drowning in cheap earbuds...

If anyone wants 'em, they're yours.

EDIT: just a note to let folks know -- if this pair (and the second one, *if* I find it) aren't gone by Monday morning, they're going to the swap-shop shack at the local dump.

Earbuds are here tonight, gone tomorrow... ;) still need that cable, too, for my 2nd gen 1gb iPod Shuffle...

I have an Asus/HP A7M266-M socket A motherboard w/cpu and fan, 756mb ddr, PCI Creative SB Live!, Adaptec AUA-2000B usb 2.0 card, and a Nvidia 5200 128mb (I think) AGP video card, plus an amazingly working 195W Bestec psu that powered the whole pc. Incredibly, the machine was working perfectly until I disassembled it for the case.

PM with your zip code and I'll get you a price for shipping. Would prefer one person take the whole lot but if someone has a need, pm away.

I still have the ones I offered up a few months ago (SATA 80GB). If you can use them, you're welcome to them.

Those are desktop drives correct?
I have a few desktop ones still remaining, but if those are laptop, then I'll take ya up on that.

Thanks

Looking for a socket 775 motherboard if anyone has one laying around. Doesn't need to be anything special, just looking for something that has a pci-e slot and supports 4gb of ram at least.

I also have a ton of spare parts laying around here if anyone needs anything, we could possibly arrange a cross-ship. Mostly just cables and odds & ends.

Yes sir, desktop. I only offered again because you specified desktop or laptop over 80GB...thought you might have used up your stash already. :)

The only laptop drives I have ATM are a 160GB Seagate that made some wonderful noises when I put it in my external dock to test it, and a 120GB Samsung that's most likely on its way out. Runs fine for a while in my tester Inspiron 1545 and then BSOD's with a "boot device not found" error. Turn it off and back on and then it's recognized again. Need to rule out a software issue and run some SMART software on it...last time I put it through drive diagnostics, it passed all tests.

Yeah, for the desktop drives I'm looking for 160GB and up, but hey, beggars can't be choosers. Apoligies on the lack of info in my post.
I do appreciate the thought though.

Thanks a bunch

Never got rid of those earbuds, now have two pairs (at least, that I can locate...)

Anyone have a hankering for crappy earbuds?

I have some custom IO plates, believe they are from an Intel DQ87PG motherboard.

They came with the custom machines, then the customer decided they wanted a serial port and that required a new custom IO plate (the serial port going in the spot next to the LPT port)
I have 18, they are free, just pay shipping (all in a flat rate USPS box for $6)
PICTURE

I just got an otterbox defender iphone case and belt clip freebie off the local CL but its for the iphone 5 not for the 4/4s. they cut out the plastic screen protector of the case. free for the cost of mailing.

still looking for otterbox defender clip holster for iphone4

longshot but I'm looking for a few things

A 8 bit nes console: if you have one laying around in any condition
2x512mb pc 4200 ram sticks.
geforce 7600, 8600 or similar 128bit pci-e card that does not require external power

I have a bunch of optical drive units from Lenovo m93p machines, they are dvdrw laptop units, in an external USB case (drive is laptop sata style).
I tested them on 3 machines and they work fine as external drives.
Just pay shipping, think the size is 9x9 inches.
I'll post a pic later tonight
