There is an editorial posted at Now Gamer today called "Titanfall - Don't Fall For The Hype" that is certainly worth the read. The author explains that, while the game IS great, over the top hype could lead to disappointment.

With the three or so hours I had with the game I got a good feel for it – and even did pretty well, coming top most games. Freerunning is slick – if not a little glitchy – combat is great fun and those Titans are suitably empowering (but not overpowered). Overall, Titanfall is a great game. But it’s not exactly the innovative experience many are pitching it as.

I find that if I have too high of expectations for a game I come away disappointed. If I just keep it to excitement (not hype) I usually have a good time.

Never hype yourself up for a game.

I think I had a post deleted because I talked about this game when it was closed beta, which I honestly didn't know at the time. I of course do now. This was a few days ago. With that said, and I will re-frame from talking about the game, I will say that I thought the same exact thing about the hype they are building up.

I've followed this rule for a while now. I was beyond hyped for Halo 2 when it came out. It was a good game, but not close to what I hyped myself up to believe. Never again.

So getting too whipped up about something leads to disappointment?

Did we not figure this out when we were all five?

There are millions of dollars on the line - no shit this thing is going to be hyped and marketed and advertised to high hell.

Here's the bigger picture that's happening: There's an enormous amount of pressure for this thing to perform, because EA took a LARGE sum of money from Microsoft to keep it off the PS3/PS4, and that was before anyone knew the PS4 would go on to outselling the Xbox One definitively - the PS4 outsold the XBOX ONE by a margin of 2:1 in January, and the PS4 has not even gone on sale in Sony's home turf of Japan yet - that's happening this Saturday with a launch lineup of 25 region specific games so that'll be yet another huge boost.

Point here is Xbox One is floundering significantly with a weak game lineup and so all hopes are on Titanfall to be the "Halo" type system seller. So its not just one game that hangs in the balance, its Microsoft's whole nextgen platform.

Since when does a 5 year old have that level of mentality? Hell, I remember being 16 and having some sexy slutty skank shaking her ass all night at me only to find out she was a virgin and it was just an act.

It's not like there are a lot of great titles out for the PC back to back to back. We might get a handful each year that the entire gaming community as a whole would agree were great titles.

I've heard a lot of hype on this game, a lot. Also, if you will remember, Respawn Entertainment has a lot of street cred. They make very good games. So when you have Microsoft and Respawn Entertainment telling the world that Titanfall will be HUGE... people are going to believe the hype.

The article states everything most logical people have already figured out. Having played the beta, I came away with exactly what I was expecting, A faster paced CoD with Mechs. It's not *bad* at all, I had fun, but there was nothing in the game that made me want to play more than a handful of matches at most in one sitting (generally 2-3 matches).

Is it a good/fun game? Absolutely. Is it the system seller/game changer that it's being hyped up as? No, not in my opinion, not unless they have some drastic content they still have yet to show, which is very doubtful.

I'll probably still pick the game up down the line, maybe when it's on sale or something, but it's nothing that I'd go for on day 1.

I'm expecting to drop 150 - 350 hours into it and call it a day. I really like it, but I'm not going to play it like I did WoW (12,000 - 14,400 hours). No hype train here.

You are comparing apples and airplanes. Competitive 6v6 FPS versus MMO? Not even comparable.

Also the devs themselves gave everyone an open beta and said to try it out and only buy it if you like it. So yeah, there's hype, but I think the actual developers of the game have been very grounded and straight forward. They want the game to succeed because players like it, not because EA is good at marketing.

To an extent I think the same can be said about the extreme negative hate about it.

Maybe that's just Hardforum though. It's turned into a hate on every game bandwagon.

I thought I would only like it a little and probably only play it with a friend if he got it, but I ended up playing two or three hours a day during the beta. It was a great deal of fun and I might get it later in the year.

Don't fall for the click bait.

pretty much, I was actually not looking forward to titanfall as it looked like cod with mechs to me. But after playing the beta I can't wait for this game to come out now. While not revolutionary, it's still tons of fun. Believe the hype kids

I was very much on the fence about Titanfall. If anything I was leaning towards thinking I would dislike it. They gave me a beta key though and I enjoyed myself. Having actually played the game it doesn't matter at all what EA or Respawn say about it because I have my own opinion of it. I came away ready to buy the game if I can afford it where I wouldn't have before.

Any announcement yet about 60fps cap and 1080p or higher? Is it always going to be matchmaking lobbies stupidity then joining some so called official ms cloud server? I don't see how that can be called a competitive fps.

Damn...only game I've played for 150+ hour was Skyrim. If I got even 50 hours out of Titalfall I'd say it's worth full price.

Sadly I can't see myself playing it for even half that amount of time before getting bored.

I played a bit of the beta and I can say that each individual part of the game that I experienced was great. I really did not have much bad that I could find to say about it. I can say that I was not impressed... it just feels mediocre in my opinion even with not being able to pinpoint a particular flaw in the game itself. To me it is a game I will not be rushing out to purchase but might be inclined to pick up on sale later on.

kinda like the game. what hype? if you like it, just play it.

played it -- was okay...

it's one of those games Id probably buy if it was 20 dollars, you know they already have 100+ dollars worth of DLC lined up for this thing behind the curtain.

60 dollars though -- they can suck it.

Just vote with your wallets, if you like it pick it up and if you don't move on that all.

A bit out of left field, folks, but does anybody remember Tribes 2? For a lot of us, that old, old game will still be the standard by which ant attempt at an open world team shooter will be judged. With all its warts, and there were many, particularly in the beginning (I came late to the party, thankfully after it had been out for a year or two), it was the fastest and most slashingly murderous team combat game I've ever played before or since.

part of the charm was that the game was designed not to be easy to learn the skills. But when you mastered something, like flying the Shrike, you could do amazing things - or try to. Because it was difficult, when you got it right, you knew you had accomplished something.

Best regards, and game on!

Yup, DLC or easy experience upgrade purchases.

That's every major publisher's game nowadays. Hell today in World of Warcraft for $60 you could have your character leveled to 90 instantly. That game is all about taking your time and playing until max level.

For me it's hard to judge without having played the story portions of the game, that kind of stuff seems like the most fun to me. Makes the whole thing more immersive.

I was under the impression that this game was online multiplayer only, so I don't think there's a story mode or single player campaign or am I wrong?

I played the shit outta the first Tribes...I believe I sunk more "gaming" hours into that single game then any 2 or 3 other titles combined, if you exclude the C&C games..

It really forced you to play as a Team, and everyone was vital to the Team, no matter their chosen role...I have been trying to break back into Online Games, but I often find that the people act like 12 year old kids and the sense of Team Work just doesn't exist..Maybe I just need to find a clan or something I can fit in well since I like to enjoy myself but am far from a "Uber, L33t, PRO MLS" kinda player...

Yeah, Tribes was awesome. It required MUCH more skill than this game.

What hype?
Its an EA game.
I've learned a long time ago with EA it doesn't matter how good the game is, its whether or not it'll even run on my PCs that counts before I can even get to good or bad!

So what tribes was always destined to fail because they wouldn't listen to the noobs. If you liked tribes 2 go play tribes ascend its the newer game. But that said the tribes franchise always had the chance to bring in mechs and really bring in the masses. They always choose not to. I SPECIFCALLY instructed HiRez to do this exact thing that is being done in titan fall they blew it off.

Now titanfall is going to be a big game that everyone is going to remember and in true form most kids will have no idea that tribes even existed. The tribes devs never once understood what they had and how to finish it. They screwed it up over and over every game.

And for the record tribes 2 was pretty much the inspiration for battlefield. Once again another game comes along dumbs down an idea and game play and cleans house.

I might like it, if it had triple screen support.

As it stands now, there's no hud on triple screen. Which kills it for me.

Tribes didn't really need mechs. In fact, I think they probably would have slowed down the gameplay considerably. Not sure why you think Tribes "failed" when it had a fairly large following.

It failed because it lost that following, starting with T2 when they released a broken game, not broken by todays standard, I mean really broken over half the people couldn't install it.

Mechs don't need to slow them game down they just have to be tweaked. But hey that's the mentality that made sure it never happened. The spirit of tribes was to give people access to whatever they want then let them choose how the game would be played. Mappers could exclude things from maps etc....

6 v 6 seems boring especially if the map is sized proportionally otherwise you get bored running around a large map looking to engage.

It's nice and fun, but in no way would I drop 60 on it. 2 days into the Beta and it was already getting a little old.

Yeah. I was an avid Tribes player, bought T2 and gradually stopped playing.
By the time someone got the "classic" physics back in the game, it was dead, dead, dead.

I may try Tribes: Ascend sometime. Still working on my gaming setup.

As far as Mechs go, I really enjoyed the MW series, so I originally thought this was going to be something like that.
